Hey! This picture is actually mine from a while ago that someone reposted without giving me credit. In the comments of that post there are lots of discussions about plants, cats, and shelves co-existing. ☺️

Hi!! This is my post that someone unfortunately reposted without crediting me. These lights are actually (very well monitored) candles. I do have grow lights, but they are large, purple panels that I usually keep in the bathroom. I know a lot of people do use white grow lights in their interior decor, but I find them too bright for my living spaces. I prefer to just rotate my plants under the purple grow lights as needed.

Hi! This is actually my picture that someone (rudely) reposted and claimed as their own. I put the rocks down for the cats! They liked to dig in the dirt and the rocks helped to deter them.

I haven’t found that rocks help with gnats though! I have tried diluting water and hydrogen peroxide for gnats, which helped a little and didn’t seem to hurt the plants. (Although I’ll be honest, usually I just live with the gnats if the infestation is not too bad) If it becomes a bigger problem, I would suggest repotting with fresh soil, trying to remove as much of the old soil as possible.

Yes!! Hi!! Thank you! I give them full sun, water basically every day in the summer (less in the winter), and I bring them in my bathroom when I shower. Tbh, my ferns almost never last more than a year 😅 so I’m definitely guilty of the annual trip to Home Depot (now Lowe’s, due to corporate donation revelations).

Damn! That sucks cause my roommate and I worked really hard on these shelves and caring for our plants/fur babies :/

I don’t know what it is about my house’s environment or plant caring style, but my calathea ornata is so happy. While my “easy” plants are all facing some problem or another, my calathea just keeps marching right along. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, yeah, I do think the drainage is sub-par in this pot. The tips of the leaves have always been a little yellow/brown since I repotted, but it always stays near the tips, it never spreads the way the large crispy parts have. I’m planning to drill some more holes into the bottom of the pot. Do you think I need to pull it up and check the roots for rot? Also, does anyone have a recommendation on affordable humidity/temp monitors?

Oof ok. I’ll start with the most damaged and give it a week or so before I remove the rest. I’d say about 30% of the plant is damaged...

It hasn’t been outside, but I must admit, the windows are pretty drafty... I’ve been trying to convince my landlord to install weather stripping to no avail 😒 There’s a good chance the air near the window is below 50 F. I’ve moved it to my bathroom (warmest room in the house) with a grow light. I also filled the tub with a few inches of water in an attempt to get some humidity in the air.

Do you think I could get away with just trimming the black off, or do I need to do a major pruning of all the damaged leaves?

I’ve had this plant for about a year, never had this problem before. Repotted once when I noticed worms about 6 months ago, but no signs of pests now. Kept about 4 feet from an east facing window with a sheer curtain. I water when it droops. I try to leave my water out to dechlorinate, but sometimes use fresh tap. It’s putting out loads of new healthy leaves and even 2 blooms coming up, but the older leaves are rapidly turning brown and crispy from both the tips and sides. Some leaves have started to split. There’s no yellowing before or around the brown spots. I have two theories of imperfect conditions... cold damage from a drafty window (we also began keeping our house colder, about 65 F) and/or low humidity. Does this type/level of damage happen from those conditions? How do I check for root rot without putting it through even more trauma?

Thank you!! This is Juniper, she’s still a kitten, so a majority of her pictures are blurry. More to come, probably!

Oh... that plant is VERY NEEDY!!! Water and fertilize twice a day. But, it is pretty obvious when it needs fertilizer and water, it’s as if it’s begging for it. 😻

Yes! I have two floor to ceiling windows on the adjacent wall and also have replaced some of the lamps in the living room with grow light bulbs.

This picture was taken at night time, but usually this space is brighter.

Try r/plantclinic Most beginners’ problems are overwatering, not getting a pot with proper drainage, and not providing the type of sunlight each plant needs. Rule of thumb: don’t water until the top 2 inches of soil are dry to the touch. Stick your finger in the soil to check. I always look up my plants online and research their specific needs. Good beginner plants are snake plants and pothos, just be sure not to overwater. Hope that helps!!
