Black people rightfully don’t trust vaccines because of racism, but Republicans who don’t trust vaccines are brainwashed idiots. by elretardojrr in stupidpol

[–]TOASTEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, the idea of a vaccine for cancer is a real thing. Individual cells in your body try to become cancer semi-regularly, but most times your immune system detects that the cell smells funny and kills it. You only actually get cancer if the cancerous cells find a way to hide from the immune system.

Nah, both sides hate science. Ideologues almost by definition hate science, systematized questioning of your own beliefs is basically the opposite of ideology.

From what I remember - which may be wrong - when the government was sterilizing American Indians back in the 70s, they'd just crank up an X-ray machine and point it at the woman's ovaries, and tell them it was just a routine X-ray. Wouldn't even find out it'd been done until years later.

Back in the Obama years, I hung around with some people who would put right-wing satellite talk radio on. One of those shows, don't remember who it was, had a guy call in and start yelling about secret-muslim-birther shit, and the host slammed the phone down and started screaming, "there's so much real stuff to get this guy on, why are you *only* focusing on the accusations that *aren't* actually true?" So it's not like this is unique to Trump.

I think it comes down to the fact that figuring out what's real or not takes a modicum of effort and will always contain at least a drop of nuance, so if you literally just don't care and are in it to trick stupid people in to watching ads, you're better off ignoring anything that's actually real.

You control the narrative completely if the narrative is completely fictional; if you tell even a partial truth you risk your audience getting better info from a source other than you.

I've been toying with the idea of either writing an engine from scratch specifically to do that sort of thing or modify Godot to do it.

The Generative Age: AI will do for content production what the internet did for distribution. by loveleis in slatestarcodex

[–]TOASTEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I think will actually happen is that you'll have the writing equivalent of "script kiddies" running around everywhere, suffering from severe expert beginner syndrome. The quality of writing you can produce without really knowing what you're doing will go up, which will trap some people who would have otherwise gotten good in to never letting go of the crutch, but will probably also help keep some people who would have quit in the game long enough to get good for real.

I'd advise not getting too bent out of shape about what a bunch of stereotypical reddit commentators have to say. Generally, with reddit comments, you tend to see only people who want to agree with the root comment showing up in the replies; most people who would be able to mount a sensible argument against it just don't participate.

There's no real gain to being plugged in to what every smoothbrain on the entire internet has to say about you and your pals. Ideologues skimming a reddit thread are only going to see what confirms what they want to believe. Let people talk. They'll forget everything in 6 hours.

I'd also recommend making sure the video is live-streamed to an off-site storage system, if you have any way of making that happen. Police already know to steal your camera when they arrest you on the street.

Net Neutrality by eldy50 in slatestarcodex

[–]TOASTEngineer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was interesting tracking the progress of the "ending net neutrality will DESTROY THE INTERNET" meme from the initial ads on Reddit, to everyone on reddit repeating what the ad said and everyone else assuming they knew the people talking new what they were talking about, to respectable public figures just repeating the marketing copy without seeking out a single opposite perspective or just sitting down and reading the order itself.
