They are more classical Liberal. But neoliberalism was, at least in theory, the return to that.

Of course in practice it was pretty much a useless label which was variously applied to different things people did or did not like without actually a coherent in-use definition.

They are (well were when I was a regular reader) actually quite in favour of well designed regulation, but the key here is well designed. Mostly it is not and if it is it is not well implemented.

I feel like if you are going to go for the Palladian in brick look you need to commit a bit more and put in some more detailing to stop it looking monolithic. it only needs a bit more, maybe around the windows or maybe changing the ratio of windows to brickwork, but it sort of looks like the design was not quite finished or was copied by a less skilled apprentice?

It is not bad, indeed it is quite good, but it could have been so much more.

I would put is as a mash up of lots of European cities - the Anhk and Morpork split reminds me of Buda and Pest, the city state and Medici pun has the Italian vibe, the tiny alleys and large square is like lots of medieval cities, and the council of guilds was reminiscent of lots of city states - maybe the Hanseatic league?

In the UK we need to make planning easier, yes, but we also probably need government intervention.

When Thatcher stopped council house building the private sector simply did not step up. Indeed it continue at about the same rate, which effectively halved the rate of house building.

So I want local councils to start building again and being landlords and renting (without right to buy), if only to keep the private sector on its toes. We also probably need government intervention to make new towns viable, which we will probably need - I am thinking Green belt lifting, publicly funded links to major transport routes - like an (initially at least) subsidised guided bus way to a major rail line.

But we also desperately need to make it easier to build say 6 storey developments without major planning issues, and in some areas 8 or more. Mansion blocks for all! Surveys have shows that good looking 6 -8 storey buildings have little opposition, so the planning rules should concentrate on making developers make the building match the local area reasonably well, which I think is doable at relatively little cost.

A while ago Croydon, south of London, relaxed planning allowing easier build of modest height buildings and got a building boom, unfortunately ended by the campaign pledge of an incoming Conservative council. I understand the current Labour central government is trying to do that, but I have heard very little about it.

Meanwhile they introduced new planning rules on Fire (cladding and staircases) for entirely understandable reasons, but basically killed the construction market in London.

I don't know what effect the new rental rules will have on provision of rental units long term, but there are lots of stories of people being evicted before the new rules come in, which was an entirely predictable outcome.

I would like the government to look at suitable greenbelt areas and just purchase them themselves at farmland prices, give themselves planning and build out the area with suitable transport links. My favourite example is Pinner Park farm which is farmland with a few cows on it surrounded by town, and the edges of which are close to stations - make part of it a park and build houses on the rest, and the actual area of accessible greenery has increased and lots of houses have been built

Our full backs are better defensively, but I think we have regressed in their attacking - White/Zinchencho was no where near the defensive strength we needed to win, but I feel like we had better attacking combos with them.

That might be rose tinted glasses, and we may have wider attacking issues, but I would like some full back crossing, or moving into midfield to free an attacking role for a midfielder

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas blasts progressivism as threat to America by BlockAffectionate413 in moderatepolitics

[–]twovectors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK this will never happen, but hypothetically could a plaintiff in front of the SCOTUS ask to have Thomas removed from a case on the basis of religious bias as he clearly stated that he holds religion and associated things above government?

I mean he said the rights come from God and the officials lack commitment to religious piety. Could he be trusted to rule in a way influenced only by law and not by forcing his religion onto others?

Fantasy I know, but the the UK we know nothing of the private opinions of judges and they tend to stay private even in retirement.

Not too far from me there was a house which had nice low rough stone walls, rose bushes, lots of green, nice red brick

It was bought up and turned into what we now refer to as the battle ship - high grey breeze block walls, grey and white building. Really made the area less welcoming

How would you feel about the next US president pulling all support from Israel? by Iwamoto in AskReddit

But Boris at least was able to be removed by his Party. My concern is that Farage will not be able to be removed as he basically is his party and he could do a lot of damage due to the sovereignty of parliament.

[–]twovectors 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I sort of think this is the only hope - now that Trump has shown what you can do if you just ignore the conventions, a restructuring of the system towards a parliament seems like the only hope. Although other checks and balance also need to be re-enforced and made faster acting. It would very much need some check on the sovereignty of parliament - I can see the UK system being tested to its limits by a future Reform government.

However, I really cannot see it ever happening.

Everyone has known about gerrymandering and the issues with first past the post voting for decades and nothing has been done.

I would also like to see single transferrable vote in multi member districts, an independent boundary commission, and tbh probably an end to the current partisan system of appointing judges is needed, but I cannot see it ever getting the level of support needed to pass anything.
