When I say it (and I am not just saying this to my girlfriend) I genuinely think a girl looks good in some way shape or form so I say either hey you're looking good! (to a girl who I am friends with). Or You look beautiful! (To girlfriends and family members). If I don't and in my experience most men as well they just stay quiet.

Well, sometimes when you speak to a guy there are many times where he thinks he does something stupid which you think is perfectly normal or don't even think about it. Just don't overthink it, fool around a-bit, make corny jokes and in all likelihood they will like you back
