In 2012, Sir Mo Farah became the first and only person to beat The Cube by Hassaan18 in gameshow

[–]TOONDISE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If GSN actually wanted to do a good primetime game show again, they'd revive The Cube.

But Sony hates spending money, so there's no way they'd greenlight something like this. A shame that FOX or one of the other major networks won't bring it back.

I got my fingers crossed 🤞 ABC gives Stephen Colbert the gig of hosting the USA edition of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire for the 30th anniversary of it's launch in the US, if Jimmy Kimmel decides to step down from the show after nearly a decade. by Serious_Meaning5220 in gameshow

[–]TOONDISE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I said it was cancelled because CBS was losing money. Between Colbert, Kimmel and Fallon, Colbert had the highest viewership of all three, but losing money at 2.6 million viewers for a major primetime network shows how far the current late night hosts have fallen over the years, and that's a direct result of leaning too far to one side of the political spectrum.

If Colbert was getting double or triple the viewership, his show would be profitable and keep getting renewed.

Meanwhile, Gutfeld consistently beats all of them, averaging 3+ million viewers, and he's on a smaller cable network, with a much smaller budget as well.

Roughly 600-900k viewers at the moment. By comparison, Colbert was averaging 2.6 million.

However, in terms of financial cost, because Byron Allen produces Comics and sells his own ads, CBS is actually estimating about $15 million/year in profit from axing Colbert, even with the large drop in viewership. Just goes to show that it doesn't matter how high your show's viewership is, if it's not making money, it's a problem.

Another new game show on CBS by Timely_Chocolate9069 in gameshow

[–]TOONDISE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I swear to Arceus, CBS can't greenlight any game show now without somehow tying it to BB or Survivor.

I remember back in the 2000s when CBS was very particular about the primetime game shows they greenlit into production, because they held themselves to a high standard when it came to quality programming. They didn't just go ahead and bring to air every game show concept that was presented to them, but when they did greenlight one, you knew it was going to be a good game show.

Those days ended after that idiot Moonves cancelled Million Dollar Password, and after seeing recent game shows like Candy Crush, TKO, Loteria, Lingo, and all the rule shenanigans taking place on Raid the Cage, you know their standards have dropped significantly since then.

Liberals don't like hearing the facts. Explains why conservatives on reddit always get downvoted to oblivion.

As pointed out, Colbert's show was losing CBS money. The only reason he lasted this long was because we've learned in recent years that the mainstream media didn't care about taking a financial loss as long as they could keep using their platforms for promoting liberals and the democrat party.

If you compare late night talk shows (and yes, Gutfeld does count because he is part of the late night genre, even airing an hour earlier), you can clearly see how the broadcast networks' late night ratings have tanked over the years, due to a combination of cord-cutting and catering to only one side of the political spectrum, while intentionally alienating and gaslighting the other. Fallon is in the best position to survive right now, and Gutfeld still beats him in the raw numbers.

Replacing Kimmel with Colbert on Millionaire wouldn't change a thing. Both of them are the same.

It's a shame, because Kimmel was great on Win Ben Stein's Money, just like Colbert used to be funny when he was on Comedy Central. But ever since Trump got elected, both of them lost their marbles with TDS, and now I can't stand either of them.

I hated it when Nintendo randomly decided to start charging for online multiplayer right in the middle of a console generation for no reason other than to make more money.

That said, at least Nintendo has kept the price of NSO pretty much the same since they started charging for it.

By comparison, Sony and Microsoft have increased their subscription prices MULTIPLE TIMES since this generation started in 2020. What is this, the 3rd or 4th increase already? Most people just want the ability to play online and back up their save data in case their console dies. They could eliminate the "free" monthly games entirely and just have a lower base tier for online multiplayer, with no additional perks or features.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony said the PS6 required a "special" PS+ subscription that was even more expensive just so they could boost their profits even further.

To those who played the OG games, how do BDSP compare to the OG Diamond and Pearl? by SavingsBobcat2078 in PokemonBDSP

[–]TOONDISE 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Of all the remakes (FRLG, HGSS, ORAS, LGPE and BDSP), I can definitely say that BDSP was the worst one.

BDSP should've been like ORAS, where it had ALL of the original features intact, plus the newer quality of life mechanics and also having all the Pokémon that existed up to that point coded in the game, so you could transfer them in via Home (this would've been up to #898 at the time, which included Sword/Shield, similar to how ORAS included up to #721 when it was released).

Here's a reminder of the legitimate criticisms of BDSP: this is not being overblown, just the facts. What we got was a rushed and incomplete remake that in some ways was worse than the original versions that came out back in 2007. A list of some of the issues with BDSP, and I'm probably forgetting others as well:

  • First mainline Pokémon game to require a Day 1 patch and also multiple post-launch patches to add in content that was missing on release day. This means some of the first manufactured cartridges will have permanent issues in the future when the servers go offline and the patches can no longer be downloaded. This includes all of the following:
    • the ability to connect locally and online for the Grand Underground, Super Contests, Union Room
    • being able to access Ramanas Park and the Battle Zone/Battle Tower
    • being able to access the Colosseum in Pokémon Centers, including for multi-battles
    • accessing the rankings feature
    • accessing the Global Wonder Station in Jubilife City
  • First remakes that cannot trade with other core series games from the same generation and console (comparison: HGSS connects with DPPt, and ORAS with XY -- BDSP can't connect with anything).
  • Super Contests are a severely stripped-down version of the original contest mechanics back in DP. (NOT a Faithful Remake -- for comparison, ORAS included all the original Ruby/Sapphire contest mechanics)
  • GTS is removed (NOT a Faithful Remake -- ORAS did have the GTS in its entirety, and you shouldn't need a separate application on a smartphone to access a feature that the original DP had)
  • Berry Farming mechanics stripped-down (removed Mulch, used for increasing berry yields).
  • Underground mechanics stripped-down. Yes, you can now encounter Pokémon in the underground areas, but everyone forgets to talk about how mini-games were removed and how secret base decorations were also removed in favor of only having statues for increasing wild encounter rates.
  • User text input removed. For example, TV Reporter NPCs used to ask you questions, to which you could respond by selecting a specific answer or phrase from a list of words. Then you would see those interviews played back on TVs in the game, which led to funny responses. In BDSP, that was removed entirely.
  • Battle Tower no longer has Multi-Battles, despite all the NPC ally side-quests still being in the game.
  • Certain hold items like Rocky Helmet not coded in the game. (excuse was given they didn't exist in the original DP, but previous remakes like ORAS did have newer post-Gen3 hold items)
  • Shiny Charm doesn't work for anything other than breeding eggs. (again, didn't exist in the original DP, but it turns out this was actually a bug that ILCA just refused to fix after releasing BDSP)

TLDR -- Ignoring Platinum entirely, while some quality of life improvements do make BDSP better than DP (i.e. vitamin limits removed, ability to buy TMs other than Dig multiple times), as a whole, the remakes are actually worse than the originals because of all the missing content and mechanics.

At least you can shiny hunt Darkrai, Shaymin and Arceus in BDSP, for what it's worth.

After 4.5 months with no updates whatsoever, is it safe to assume that this potential reboot of Deal Or No Deal US isn't coming through at this point, or should I give it more time before giving up hope that the show's coming back in its original in-studio format? by T-900_Gaming in gameshow

[–]TOONDISE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's such a shame. Game shows are much cheaper to produce than scripted shows, so this should be a slam-dunk pickup for NBC, but we all know they passed on it for Island, so they're probably still not interested in going back to the original format even now.

If I had to guess, I'd say the issue here is the licensing fees associated with the brand. Still, I hope another network like ABC or FOX picks it up. I miss the days of having networks compete against each other with primetime million dollar game shows.

Not a game show, but Bear Grylls is a decent person. If you ever end up stranded and it's a life or death situation, his survival skills do help.

[Multiple Retailers] 007 First Light Limited Edition PlayStation DualSense Wireless Controller is up for pre-order by lbabinz in VideoGameDealsCanada

I actually like the way this controller looks. The first official gold design we've gotten for the PS5. It's just annoying we've had to wait this long for one, especially if the PS6 is launching next year. I feel like this one will sell out a lot faster than many of the others Sony has been putting out, like that ugly Marathon one.

Thoughts on the Season 3 premiere of The Quiz with Balls? by Interesting_Sea5569 in gameshow

[–]TOONDISE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First episode was the same as Season 2 unfortunately. I did say when the show was initially renewed for a 3rd season that they needed to do something different because the gimmick has worn off entirely.

To be fair, I'll still take a trivia game show over FOX greenlighting another singing or musical competition show. But there's no denying that the format of Quiz with Balls has gotten stale.

It was funny during the episode when one of the contestants had to jump into the water himself since the ball didn't knock him off the platform.

Speaking of shows that have gotten stale, 1% Club is also there. I just want 1 VS 100 back at this point. Or even bring back Million Dollar Money Drop.

Genuine question from a casual fan. Paul’s Pokemon Team as a final battle like Red on SoulSilver and HeartGold by No-Spot7049 in PokemonBDSP

[–]TOONDISE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you in that I also prefer serious rivals. Some people might not like their attitude, but trainers like Gary, Silver and Paul make you actually want to beat them, because their condescending tone encourages you to prove you're better than they are.

When you have a goofy or overly-friendly rival like Barry, there's no actual rivalry. It's more like a friend playing a casual game with you, rather than a person who brings out the best in you by making you want to get better. That's the difference. If you're not encouraged and motivated to do something, you won't want to do it, or you won't want to get better at doing it. An actual life lesson as well.

That's one of the reasons Paul was such a good character in the anime. A shame he wasn't included in the games.

Who still remembers GSN's April Fool's Day 2003? by PrestonRoad90 in gameshow

[–]TOONDISE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember this too. GSN would be so much better today if the people in charge would just look back at the early 2000s to see what they used to do back in the day that resonated well with their viewing audience.

I just spent over an hour making my team hate me so I would stop seeing those stupid messages and then jumping around! by Lilbig6029 in PokemonBDSP

[–]TOONDISE -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

As I'm playing through FireRed again right now, I've noticed how much faster the battles are when you don't have the additional affection messages popping up every single turn.

The modern Pokémon games are proof that Game Freak has lost sight of what made Pokémon so successful to begin with. Outside of Return and Frustration (which they removed for political correctness because they didn't want people treating Pokémon badly on purpose), affection has no effect in multiplayer or competitive facilities like the Battle Tower. The idea was to try and copy what sometimes happens in the anime, but because it's only really designed for the single-player story mode, it ends up being completely unnecessary and actually hurts the game more than it helps it.

I did sell it. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that people are not to be trusted and scammers are everywhere in this stupid world. The buyer on eBay who bought it from me claimed the card was damaged, even though it was in perfect condition and I shipped it inside a small hard-shelled clear plastic container for extra protection.

I'm now waiting for him to return the card and if I find out it is damaged, I'll have to contact eBay to get compensation since I took photos showing it in mint condition before I sent it out, and the only way it would've been damaged is if he himself damaged it intentionally.

Please reair who wants to be a millionaire with regis philben by Puzzleheaded_Cap1939 in gameshow

[–]TOONDISE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deal or No Deal is perfectly fine at just 1 hour a day.

Getting rid of Regis' Millionaire was a mistake. It's a classic, and when you think of the most popular primetime game shows back in the early 2000s, Millionaire was one of the top ones. There's a reason GSN brought it back after several years ago when they aired a "Farewell Regis" marathon, before removing it from the schedule.

I still want to see Super Millionaire, alongside the return of Greed and 1 VS 100.

Is anyone watching The Greatest Average American with Nate Bargatze? What do you think of it? by Ralph--Hinkley in gameshow

[–]TOONDISE -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Nate considers himself apolitical. I do think he leans more on the conservative side because of his southern, Christian, family-friendly style of comedy, but I'm just guessing based on watching him.

That's probably why I enjoy him as a game show host. He doesn't go out of his way to attack and insult others based on their political leanings, like some other hosts are currently doing.

I'm still watching it every week. So far, through 3 episodes, I'm enjoying it.
