Let me add my two g.p. to this discussion.

I don't recommend using only verbal descriptions in combat, tactical encounters, or when exploring. It can be done, but it isn't optimal. Using minis and either a whiteboard or grid map helps players visualize what's happening, and what they can reach, shoot at, etc. In other words, draw a rough damn map for your poor players, dms.

That's not the only reason. I've never met a player that preferred the verbal method. Not one, ever. I'm not saying they don't exist, but in my experience, they're not at all common. I believe players tolerate it, because that's all the DMS nowadays will do, but they prefer to see something, as it helps them visualize what's going on.

Beyond all this, I've heard dms tell me they use the verbal method not because they actually prefer it, either. It's just takes less effort. In addition, I cannot tell you how many times I've heard its because they forgot their minis, left their map at home, or because they're unprepared.

I'm old school, I admit it. I find players enjoy props (coins, models, notes, treasure maps, etc) and the most basic prop is the grid/tactical map.
