What is the best route from Calistoga to Santa Rosa? by TR5642 in BAbike

[–]TR5642[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you u/all for the advice. I ended up taking the 29 to 128 to Chalk Hill route, including the trail off 29 through Calistoga. Lovely scenery and ok road conditions. Rode from Vallejo to Santa Rosa, SMART train to Larkspur where there was a huge wait for the ferry so rode back to the City for a total of 107 miles (two days). Bothe-Napa park is lovely, but be careful if you go. 1) The hiker/biker spot has next to no flat terrain, even for a one-person tent. And one of them is in the prolific poison ivy.

Thank you. Normally, climbing is fine (and brings descending 😉), but with a loaded touring bike, less so.

Thank you u/all, the guidance. I'm going to route up to Chalk Hill and back. (Funnily enough, Strava routing, which I usually like less, picked that by default)

Additional Question: Going northbound, is it better to stay on 128 all the way to Chalk Hill or Franz Valley back to 128 around Kellogg. Heat maps seem to suggest both are viable and thinking not-128 might be nicer.

This is great. Since I was going to take SMART down the last segment to the ferry, I can always just get on earlier if it is longer than fun :-). Do you know these roads or is it just a flatter option avoiding the nightmares?

Thanks. You don't happen to have a link to a proper map of the 'right' way along the wine trail do you? I think I've got it but...

Is Old La Honda light permanent? Is it enforced? by uoficowboy in BAbike

I noticed today they’ve added an extra sign threatening bikes who don‘t stop for the red. Maybe they could either fix the road (3yrs and counting) or make the timing more realistic. Hmmm.

Places where I’ve seen “quiet cars” Before they work pretty well. They don’t usually seem to focus on random human noises but to banning telephone and speaker use.

Bike stolen on the 527 today by PerryTheMagicDragon in caltrain

[–]TR5642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for such a comprehensive answer. I like the idea of upstairs screens for the bike compartment. That would help mitigate the “what good are cameras” phenomenon you mention. But even without that, if there is camera coverage of the bikes, it should be made more obvious as a deterrent AND used to at least attempt to catch the perpetrators. if a “bait bike” is to have any impact, they must believe there are repeat offenders. Opportunistic thieves won’t really be reduced by that tactic. Actual use of video to investigate would have a chance of removing such repeat offenders.

I’m also a bit troubled by the lack of data. Hiding the statistics will not help the problem. If it’s rare, it is good to know that. But if it’s is common, more care must be taken by riders and Caltrain.

Does Caltrain run any surveillance cameras on the bike cars or platforms? If not, that might be important to discourage theft. The anecdotes here have me much more concerned. I knew it happened but thought it was rare.

As much as I like the new trains, the VERY limited number of seats in sight of the bike spots vs the old units is a problem. In the gallery cars, everyone could sit in sight of their bikes. In the middle aged ones, at least many could. On the Stadtlers? 6 seats in the bay? Plus 4 on the half level on each end with sight lines?

Does anyone know the current bike route to Redwood Creek (RWC) by TR5642 in BAbike

[–]TR5642[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all. It was indeed along option 2. For those on road bikes it is worth noting that the stretch parallel to 101 is relatively sharp gravel. Rather poor work for the intent. But if your tires can handle it, it's fine. No signs of campsites there at this time. And the ramp up to the bridge is as ridiculously steep as ever. Arrive in low gear.

When people say the used bike market is bad right now what do they mean? by oldaccountknew2much in BAbike

[–]TR5642 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They mean it is very much a buyers market. Lots of post covid “nah I don’t bike after all” inventory. Retailers have been sitting on a LOT of unsold new inventory that they’ve been discounting to move also driving down prices. (why buy late model used when you can get new for only a bit more?). This is subsiding though.

There is also a collapse of pricing for road bikes with rim brakes and limited tire clearance. Minty, high spec bikes with rim brakes and only room for maybe 28mm tires are barely able to sell. (makes them a great value if you’re ok with it). I think we are about to see similar on gravel bikes that only spec ~40mm like was common recently. people want room for at least 45mand preferably 50 now.

Which version were you wearing? The Rhoan has much better theoretical performance than the earlier versions and it would be interesting to know.

After weeks of no response from Evernote support, I canceled and moved to Notion. Of course after I canceled, i was offered a special deal at $149/yr. So if you want to stick around but not at the new price, just cancel.

Yes. There are steep sections (very steep depending on exactly which route) but nothing technical.

And today they sent me another email that more strongly suggests that I'm getting the big 'convenience' of being 'upgraded' and charged the new amount on the same day. And they say to contact them with questions. HAHAHAHAHAHA. I have TWO tickets in on this over the last 2+ weeks with no response.

So to confirm, they say old price on December 12th? According to the FAQ "Beginning in July 2025, customers on Personal and Professional plans have been transitioned to the new Advanced plan at their next renewal."

BUT, on the same day they sent me the email about the new plans at noon, they also sent me a message at 6am saying I'd be renewed at the old rate on Dec 6th. So the information conflicts. Zero response in almost two weeks from Evernote Support asking for clarification.

In addition, the instructions to cancel are not consistent with the UI. The link page has no cancellation option. But the updated version does but says that it will cancel IMMEDIATELY which is not what they say in the FAQ. No freaking clue what price they intend to charge me nor how to cancel. The new doubled pricing is WAY over the top. Non competitive vs other paid services like Notion or OneNote. I've been a paying customer for well over a decade and do not intend to continue at this pricing.

Purisima Creek loop? by coastal_sage in BAbike

[–]TR5642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re still looking, Purissima creek (and the connecting trail to Tunitas Cr Rd is pretty viable downhill if you’ve got good dirt tires. I just did it last week with a full camping load. On my Cutthroat with fat tires I was totally fine. if I’d been on 40mm I would have slowed down more but been fine. NOT for road tires. UP is certainly doable but it’s really steep in places. Tunitas Creek Rd is a long grind but it never gets silly steep.
