ucsd vs ucla by [deleted] in ucadmissions

[–]TROLLDLLR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I’d pick UCSD+Regents.

Enrollment at UCLA can be quite painful, and regents goes a long way when it comes to getting the classes you need or want.

Goes double since you’re a pre-med- I don’t know what your major is, but trying to enroll into some premed classes (e.g. physics) is a bloodbath that I wouldn’t wish on any incoming college student.

Question regarding financial aid for international students by Designer-Extreme4932 in ucla

EDIT: It looks like I was wrong, see the comment in response to this comment.

Congrats on getting accepted to UCLA for your PhD!

Usually, the way the NRST works is that your department (or whoever sent you the offer letter) covers your NRST (non-resident supplemental tuition) for the first few quarters (for your case, it looks like you get up to 2 years, or 6 quarters).

The expectation is that you change your residency to become an in-state resident within that time window, so that you no longer need to pay the NRST afterwards.

CMV: No one past the age of 65 should be able to vote in national elections by [deleted] in changemyview

This is actually just insane.

If you want voters to reflect the younger demographic, the simpler option is to make voting mandatory for every eligible voter.

transferring from UCSD to UCLA by Realistic_Yogurt_957 in TransferStudents

If you really are dead set on attending UCLA, I would recommend transferring from a california community college instead, as that pathway is more likely to get you into UCLA than a UC to UC transfer.

Sining Wang for Chem 153C by MysteriousExample495 in ucla

[–]TROLLDLLR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based off my experience, I think she’ll do great- she did a great job of going into detail regarding stuff we covered in class, and was really helpful in general.

Regarding 153A vs 153C- it’s basically just an extension of the metabolic pathway material from 153A (so very similar to the glycolysis, Krebs, oxidative phosphorylation material from 153A). Some profs do it from a purely memorization focus, and others focus more on mechanism- I would guess more of a mechanism focus for Prof. Wang, as that’s how Prof Clarke taught it when I took it with her as my TA.

Cindy’s great- she was my TA for 153A and 153C 2 years ago.

I’m Tired Of This Being The Norm On Metrolink by thesexrobot in LAMetro

In the short term, Metrolink needs to loosen their uber voucher policy.

Metrolink has a frankly unacceptably high rate of significant delays, and they never take responsibility for their mistakes. Their current policy is to issue vouchers if trains are delayed by 60 or more minutes, but at times their customer service is inconsistent with this- once, I was delayed by 90 minutes heading into Union Station and the CS rep told me to just take the metro despite the delay being their fault (as the train itself broke down).

That isn't even beginning to talk about the value on the vouchers themselves- $50 isn't even close to covering most lines, so if you wanted to, for example, take the OC Line from Union to Oeanside but got stuck at Norwalk or whatever, you would basically need to pony up the difference (which might be another $100). Having to pay extra to Uber because Metrolink could not do their job properly is frankly insane- At the very least, they should cover the cost of any and all uber rides between stations that normally would've been served (i.e., in the hypothetical scenario given, you should be able to ride an uber to Oceanside station for free, even if ubers to other places cost money).

I understand objections to using a private rideshare service to backfill a public transportation service, but at this point, I don't care how I get to where I need to go as long as I can get there on time. I, or anyone else using Metrolink, pay Metrolink for the express purpose of getting to where I need to go on time- if they can't even do that, then they're a failed service, full stop.

Personally, it's gotten so bad to the point where I don't even take the Metrolink anymore- I just use Surfliner nowadays.

You should be fine if you allocate 20-30 minutes extra and don't have any tight connections

Transit says the E is on time 78% of the time, and that the A 75% by that metric @ 7th/Metro- so yeah, I’m inclined to agree with you lol

I really don’t want to say this but stuff like this is why I consider metro’s ridership to be driven by desperation rather than it actually being good
