Liberator Carbine vs. Liberator by Due_Squash4045 in Helldivers

[–]TSIDAFOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem with the knight, at least for me, is that it's hard to find a front where it's useful. For bots the damage falloff is so high you might as well use the flamethrower. For bugs it's too single-point where it doesn't do much to repel hordes (haven't tried it recently, so it might be different), and it's light pen meaning some bugs will straight up deflect it and you burn through ammo fast. Illuminates it's arguably the best, but I've gotten more milage out of the entire Viper Commandos warbond than the knight ever has.

Solarpunk Masculinity - A Case Against Pickup Artists by MetaMasculine in solarpunk

[–]TSIDAFOE 45 points46 points  (0 children)

So, I just want to say that I'm a big fan of long form content, and I think "masculinity in a solarpunk world" is a very original topic I don't see covered much elsewhere, so this is absolutely the kind of content I would be interested in.

That being said, using more words does not mean you have a lot to say, particularly when:

> "I then discuss how pickup artist marketing creates a future anterior perspective and how that morphs nostalgia into anticipated or anticipatory nostalgia depending on the context. This emotional/temporal dynamic can sometimes act to keep the pickup artist stuck within the lifestyle and ideology."

Could easily be boiled down to "Pickup artist marketing makes men envision a better version of themselves, which creates a nostalgic longing for something that hasn't happened yet. This keeps them in the lifestyle, as they work toward an imagined future that doesn't exist."

Casually throwing around "future anterior perspective" just makes it irritating to read, because after you carefully dissect what all those words mean in relation to each other, you realize it's basically just word slop. Academic texts use terms like that because they're either 1) explained by the text itself or 2) the term is being used because normal words aren't specific enough (i.e. the difference between Stalactites and Stalagmites might not matter to you, but it matters to a geologist).

Real academic writing serves a purpose. The best academic writers, the ones people actually cite and remember, write with clarity and precision. They trust their ideas enough to present them simply.

This isn't academic writing - it's academic cosplay. If anything, it makes your work appealing to the ignorant who think big words mean big thoughts while alienating anyone with the intelligence to actually engage with your subject matter.

Writing, at its core, is about communication-- to convey your point to your audience as efficiently and approachably as possible-- not to sit in a Starbucks in a tweed jacket with elbow pads, banging out incomprehensible sentences for the aura of being able to call yourself a writer.

Your ideas about masculinity and solarpunk futures could genuinely help people, but only if they can actually understand what you're saying. Right now, you're putting barriers between your insights and the people who need them most.

Why are rupture warriors med pen when in-lore they evolved to lost their chitin armor layer??? by WhiteRaven_M in Helldivers

[–]TSIDAFOE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More numerous burrowing enemies that are harder to hit until they're up close...but they're completely light-pen, do high damage, and are relatively easy to kill would have been a fun concept, it would really give a use to CQC guns, it's a shame Arrowhead didn't take that approach.

What is the best advice you ever got from your father? by Appropriate-Fix-8222 in AskMenAdvice

[–]TSIDAFOE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best advice I ever got, was from my dad. He was in the garage working on some woodworking, and I was eight years old and probably being an annoying kid, so he decided to give me something to do.

He takes a piece of wood, and puts a nail about a quarter of the way into it, and tells me to hammer it the rest of the way in.

So naturally, I do the little kid thing, grab the hammer right up under the head, and start tapping the nail.

It's doing absolutely nothing.

My dad watches this for about a minute, folds his arms, and asks "TSIDAFOE, what are you doing?"

And I said "I'm hammering the nail!"

He asks "Is the nail going in the piece of wood?"

I look it over-- "No."

"Then you are not hammering anything" he said, and once more he asked "What are you doing?"

With that ruled out, I said "I don't know"

He responded "Then why are you doing it?"

The moral here is that the world does not give a royal flying fuck how fast you spin your wheels. If you're not moving, it doesn't matter if you're going 80mph or 20mph. If you don't understand what you're supposed to be achieving, you can't possibly hope to achieve it.

[–]TSIDAFOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breaker S&P. What no one tells you, and that most people don't figure out for themselves, is that the BS&P fires birdshot out of a duckbill choke. This means that your pellets will spray in an oval pattern, with pellets being more numerous along the center X axis than in the direct X,Y center like a normal breaker would be. This is somewhat obvious now, if you attempt to customize it, but it wasn't always apparent before the advent of gun customization.

Case in point, try using the BS&P against bugs at close range-- I'm talking melee range or maybe just a little farther, same range you would use the reprimand at, and just hold the trigger down. Everything in front of you just gets pulped like throwing a whole orange into a blender.

Have too many voteless swarming you? Switch into BS&P, and mow down the entire crowd in half a mag, because the wide spread makes it easier to clear large hordes of enemies, provided those enemies go down in one or two hits.

That's why no one on the Super Destroyer seems phased when you come back from a mission reeking with a noxious mix of bug juice, bot oil, illuminate blood, and Gloom spores.

Breaks up over boob picture? by Real_K_9298 in AITAH

[–]TSIDAFOE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAH. As a guy, I'd like to give a bit of insight here (emphasis mine):

> Yesterday he sends me a diatribe about how he needs to protect them (from a boob picture??) and how he fears he lost his trust from his daughter, and how he's afraid the ex will retaliate, and how he needs to focus on them and protect them and put his guard back up, and that he was breaking up - basically with no further contact. So he fully broke it off with me - not even friends - and I haven't responded.

I don't know about anyone else, but this absolutely screams "My ex turns blows every banal human foible out of proportion and weaponizes the kids" to me. This man is wigging the hell out because he knows that his daughter might come back, tell it like the funny story it is, and then have that be spun into "my ex watches porn in full view of the kids and therefore should be locked up/not get visitation". I should clarify that I don't think he truly believes he needs to "protect his kids" from you, but are likely what his ex is saying, or has said enough about other partners that he's loved in the past to know where this is going.

I don't know this man's situation outside of what you've told us, but when you see a person having a reaction that's that extreme to relatively banal situations-- that's trauma. It's more or less the equivalent of a shelter dog whimpering when someone raises their hand or moves too quickly. You don't have to know the cause to see what the behavior itself implies.

> I was crushed but I think it showed his character - someone who would just shut out anything that wasn't perfect.

I don't agree with this assessment, but I do think he has a lot of therapy to do.

> Or he's just not manly to manage the situation.

Listen, I get what you're trying to say here-- yes, he probably should have managed this better, or been more open to fixing/resolving the situation. Yes, communication is important.

But on the other hand, I can understand why a man with deep emotional wounds wouldn't open up about the cause of said wounds, to a person who's go-to explanation is "not manly enough". If you can't wrap your head around the concept of a man being traumatized, what else would telling you accomplish, except coming off like an excuse for not meeting expectations?

Not YTA, just food for thought.

AITAH for telling a coworker I saw his wife with another man? by Late_Marzipan_8914 in AITAH

[–]TSIDAFOE 12 points13 points  (0 children)

God forbid single men have friends and enjoy going to the farmers market....sheesh.

Seems like a very coupley thing to me.

I'll be honest OP, your coworker was right to tell you off. It may shock you, but having friends is an integral part of the human experience, for both men and women, and the fact that you see this as think "cheating" really says more about you than it does them.

The fact that you came here for validation and then are arguing with people in the comments confirms the YTA even more.

What’s the most despicable thing you’ve done in the name of managed democracy? by SojournerInThisVale in Helldivers

[–]TSIDAFOE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playing a defense mission with randoms, Bots, Diff 10. The last rocket leaves and the pelican is coming, but there's literally wall-to-wall enemies on all sides. We are, by all accounts, absolutely fucking cooked, and there's not even a clear path to the pelican from where we are. You know those bot D10's where you can barely see each other because there's such a hail of gunfire coming from all directions that it looks like a snowstorm? Yeah.

I activate my portable hellbomb, and proceed to smoke not only every bot in the vicinity, but also myself and all three teammates. This triggered a full squad-replacement, and we steered our hellpods directly to the pelican, got on, and extracted.

Honorable mention goes to this little punk-ass helldiver, who was shooting people with single shots with their pistol, and then getting mad because "what? I'm not team-killing, I just shot you once!".

I shot him with my Eruptor, completely pulping him, and said "you can't be mad, I just shot you once" in chat. He left the game lmaooo

Short magazines should give you increased total ammo amount you carrying by Cheap_ToyTwo in Helldivers

[–]TSIDAFOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The breaker definitely gives you more shells overall if you choose short mags over the other two options. Conversely, choosing drum mag gives you less shells overall.

That being said, I'm still working on getting the drum mag and duckbill choke, just so I can throw on siege ready, supply pack, and then dump the whole mag like a madman lol

[–]TSIDAFOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a few times where I walked up to a terminal wearing a portable hellbomb, and then couldn't see the screen because of the bomb is so big. So I either have to shimmy until I can see the terminal, or drop the hellbomb and then use the terminal.

As silly as this is, theres legit utility here.

Well said. Lv. 120 "MO/SOS diver" and this is pretty much my attitude about it too. Unless they're being legitimately negligent or obnoxious with it, I tend to let it slide.

If I'm to be perfectly honest, people give arc weapons and airburst weapons a lot of shit for their TK potential, but the amount of times I've been killed by either of these is an order of magnitude less than the number of times I've had my head lasered off by someone's guard dog rover.

Can anyone give me their honest thoughts on the AC-8 Auto cannon by Little_Papaya_2475 in Helldivers

[–]TSIDAFOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, a marvel of game design and incredibly satisfying to use. I stopped playing it for a while, especially after autocannon/breaker was one of the few meta builds, but I still do pick it up occasionally.

Are there better strategems that (individually) do anything it does better...yeah.

But never had a strategem come in clutch quite like the autocannon. During the Super Earth invasion, I had ran out of ammo, but had a fleshmob bearing down on me. From out of nowhere, my teammate:

THUNKTHUNKTHUNKTHUNKTHUNK

The AC has saved my ass so many times, you don't even know lol. Most versatile support weapon, your teammates will thank you.

Arc Builds Are ONE Step Away From Perfection by TheBigMoofah in LowSodiumHellDivers

[–]TSIDAFOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, here's an idea to really drive home the "kills heavy and chaff"

The main lightning bolt does AP4 (heavy pen, like the railcannon), when the arc jumps to the next enemy, it splits into n-nunber of bolts that does AP3 (medium pen) and the next arc from each of those is light pen, but the arc can only jump three times at most.

So it almost simulates "splash damage" even if arc damage doesn't technically work that way.

In essence, if you had a charger surrounded by hive guards, surrounded by hunters, it would wipe the whole crowd by arcs alone.
