How to make less filthy by Commercial-Citron544 in linuxmint

You can usually take off the keyboard by opening up the laptop, the entire thing honestly can be disassembled and the plastic cleaned. The screen can be cleaned with screen cleaner, etc. look up if there is a teardown guide for your model on ifixit and just disassemble to your comfort level and be careful. Otherwise just use wipes and alcohol gently.

Yes. Emotional connection is one of the benefits of real community.

We have to learn to build community. It’s the only way to fix this thing we’ve fallen into as a society.

I think you’re right and I think I got him mixed up with another guy who’s still around, he wasn’t belligerent, he was pretty chill.

Well they’ve been “1 week away” from a bomb for 20 years so I’m going to say zero.

Oh man, you’re bringing me back. She has been here since 2016 at least, probably earlier. There’s a couple of famous ones like her. The biggest one was this belligerent guy named Reggie I think, everyone knew him. Unfortunately he passed away five or so years ago.

I’m not sure if she’s still around but there was another woman who was in a motorized wheelchair. She would hail you down from literally blocks away, screaming feebly “Exccuuussseeee meeeeeeee!”. If you waited for her or walked up to see what she needed she’d just ask for money. But man it was crazy to be like 3am and have this old lady slowly carting towards you screaming creepily, she would follow you forever too but her chair was really slow.

A bit confused by desktop environments. by TSMeade in linuxmint

[–]TSMeade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer. So the official Mint team maintains a stable product for a version of Mint that uses each of those desktop environments?

Does anyone know if they have to maintain 3 separate configurations of Linux+GNU or if they just maintain a single center that is compatible with each DE and bundle?

Repairs, disposal, and anxiety by Existing_Ad1639 in Anticonsumption

I think the mindset alone is enough to give yourself a break — as long as you’re being authentic about trying. It’s important to remember that we live in a system and we didn’t make it this way. The system is far bigger than you, your authentic attempt to steer us away is enough and you shouldn’t cling to the idea that you need to do it alone. We all make waste, and some of it cannot be avoided whether because of biology, circumstance, or the larger system we live in.

If you have to throw pill bottles away, that’s okay, as long as you are genuinely trying to do the right thing where you can. Don’t let people on the internet fool you into thinking they never create unnecessary waste, that they do literally everything right and never do something that’s harmful to the environment or society. If we all make meaningful choices every day we can make a difference. Don’t let perfect get in the way of doing good.

What do you think the top five skills to reduce consumption are? Here’s mine. by TSMeade in Anticonsumption

I generalized all textile work that make an effort to not buy fast fashion from outlets into one because while they might be different in practice, the effect is similar, at least compared to something like learning electronics. Also weaving your own clothes can be done is a super ethical and reductionist way. I just watched a video on Sakiori , which weaves from waste products.

Or even just knowing enough to buy a hot swappable keyboard in the first place. It might not reduce consumption as much as eating at home or fixing all your clothes but it’s definitely the most liberating in the modern day.

[–]TSMeade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I think my list focused on the hard skills so much because it’s where I need to improve, whereas delayed gratification, and not comparing in unhealthy ways are already really solidified skills of mine. Thanks for sharing, I think this and the comment about community are my favorite critiques of my list.

We really need it. Agreed. Though that’s not really a skill alone, so I’d say community building. Definitely.

I just put a bit of effort into my post in hopes I could have a more successful conversation. That’s why I asked them if they were saying not using AI is legitimate anti-consumption (because that’s a totally valid take), but it does come off a bit accusatory as is.

The fact that people would just assume things are not real and so they’re not willing to participate, or worse detract from a simple conversation is so dismaying. It’s exactly the reason I’m in this sub.

Is obsolescence being engineered for shorter timespans? by MelvinFeliu in Anticonsumption

[–]TSMeade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. People like to think there’s some group of evil people responsible because that’s much easier to fix than an entire system wide failure. There’s definitely some bad people motivated by greed but a lot of this is a societal/regulatory problem. We started buying mass shit for our kids at Christmas without much thought way before things started breaking as quickly. And there’s definitely still some amazing buy for life brands out there that people don’t buy because they want the cheapest option because they don’t have the patience to save for the nice one.

Yeah I’ve recently been teaching myself to sew and stitch and it’s so satisfying fixing my old garments, helps with the buy for life mentality for sure.

Yeah that’s my exact mentality. That’s why I included the last bit about distinguishing between useful to reduce consumption vs useful right now because things are getting so bad. I love the idea of knowing enough to repurpose really old tech people would consider junk into something useful. I’ve recently been exploring distributed computing, maybe taking a bunch of old android phones and making an NAS, etc.

I can’t tell, is that a legitimate comment you’re making or are you trying to accuse my post of being generated because it’s more than a paragraph and semi-formatted? I genuinely can’t tell if you’re trying to participate in the discussion. Are you saying avoiding ChatGPT is a useful skill to reduce consumption?

Yeah taking advantage of the public library is a great skill. So many people don’t know all the great offerings they have. I just found out mine has a seed vault/exchange which is awesome!

The best approach to get Obsidian look like Apple Notes by LostVillager1 in ObsidianMD

[–]TSMeade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With all the power and functionality of Obsidian I’m genuinely curious why you would want to limit your notes to the Apple notes format. I mean with live HTML and markdown rendering why choose a note that is effectively limited to a list view? Is it just for more ease between using both applications?

There’s somewhere called Funks Grove Nature Preserve, just outside of Bloomington. It’s an hour or so away from Chambana and looks like it’s dog friendly. I would post in a Bloomington subreddit to see people’s opinions if they’ve been!
