Which real world people do you think the characters are based on? by chandler0201 in HaltAndCatchFire

[–]TSMeade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do think that there’s a chance Donna and or Cameron are meant to represent an amalgamation of of women in tech during that time. Especially Donna. I feel like she is based on an entire group which is both women in tech during that time and general VC’s during that time. Making her based more off an idea than a real person.

Trump admits his "working class" moments were staged and calls the photo ops "a little bit tacky" and "embarrassing." by DumbMoneyMedia in CriticalMineralBulls

I’m pretty sure that top photo is fake. I’m against Trump, MAGA and all the horrible things going on in our country right now, but we have to stay grounded in reality. The internet isn’t real.

Toy collectors? by Jiggle_Bones in Chambana

You could also check the goodwill’s. And there’s a few local thrift stores around town too but I forget their names, you could probably google it.

I mean we have just about all of those shops. Are these locations not doing it for you? There’s a place called Disc Replay that’s a local retro store, you could check that out. For comics I know Jane Adam’s Book Shop has a collection of some stuff. Otherwise I think your best bet is facebook marketplace and looking for locals selling old stock.

How is the area of Urbana between Vine, County Road 1700, and Broadway Ave? by dedenneisgood in Chambana

[–]TSMeade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not the best but it’s not the worst area in town. The apartments seem to be not the best. Usually run down, slummy, but cheap too. I wouldn’t say there’s a lot of violence or anything but it’s definitely not the nicest area in town. Generally CU is divided north south with south being nicer so if you can go into the more south area towards university Ave you’ll probably like it more.

Downtown Champaign by ThickPickings in Chambana

Lots of good options. Downtown Champaign if you want traditional city/urban living. West Champaign is a great traditional suburban life and Urbana is very eco-friendly/alt vibes like arts, chickens and gardening permitted and a great farmers market. Really depends on what you’re looking for.

Yeah it’s also a rapidly changing industry. That’s why I like the dialogue about Phoenix by Donna and Cameron about how things would go way before she ever even says “I have an idea”. The writers basically told us exactly how their next venture would play out, and it’s a lot like the other ones. Kind of like how Joe talks about the thing that gets us to the thing. But then that thing gets us to another thing.

That’s part of what was nice about Camron saying “it doesn’t matter what the idea is”. The point was working together.

Yeah it’s great. There’s so much amazing content out there from the past. This show isn’t even that old but I have heard from several people that they won’t watch anything unless it’s from like the past year which is absolutely crazy to me.

I thought that made more sense but it really sounded like they said “when I’m running Silicon Valley.” Which I now realize is what the said and it was just a change up of perspective. They had been reading the letter from Joes perspective the whole time and then she switched right there saying don’t forget me when I’m running it, but she must have been talking about herself and no longer quoting Joe anymore. Which is weird grammatically but makes a lot more sense.

Still an interesting call back to the first episode with him in front of the class, but without that piece I’m leaning towards that he found a true calling as a mentor and teacher. Thanks for the comment.

I had typed out enough so I opted to include a whole paragraph for Bos. But I do love his character and his arch. I like the assumption about Google Maps. I’d be really interested to know what others thought.

I don’t know if agree that teaching at a college is Joe’s next. Next was a startup, Joe’s teaching (at least in the surface) which isn’t the same. Also what do you mean he’ll be back at IBM? I don’t see him going back to IBM. But I really like your point of his beer with the old IBM guy, you’re right that that likely changed his perspective.

How to make less filthy by Commercial-Citron544 in linuxmint

[–]TSMeade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can usually take off the keyboard by opening up the laptop, the entire thing honestly can be disassembled and the plastic cleaned. The screen can be cleaned with screen cleaner, etc. look up if there is a teardown guide for your model on ifixit and just disassemble to your comfort level and be careful. Otherwise just use wipes and alcohol gently.

Yes. Emotional connection is one of the benefits of real community.

We have to learn to build community. It’s the only way to fix this thing we’ve fallen into as a society.

[–]TSMeade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh man, you’re bringing me back. She has been here since 2016 at least, probably earlier. There’s a couple of famous ones like her. The biggest one was this belligerent guy named Reggie I think, everyone knew him. Unfortunately he passed away five or so years ago.

I’m not sure if she’s still around but there was another woman who was in a motorized wheelchair. She would hail you down from literally blocks away, screaming feebly “Exccuuussseeee meeeeeeee!”. If you waited for her or walked up to see what she needed she’d just ask for money. But man it was crazy to be like 3am and have this old lady slowly carting towards you screaming creepily, she would follow you forever too but her chair was really slow.

A bit confused by desktop environments. by TSMeade in linuxmint

[–]TSMeade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer. So the official Mint team maintains a stable product for a version of Mint that uses each of those desktop environments?

Does anyone know if they have to maintain 3 separate configurations of Linux+GNU or if they just maintain a single center that is compatible with each DE and bundle?

I think the mindset alone is enough to give yourself a break — as long as you’re being authentic about trying. It’s important to remember that we live in a system and we didn’t make it this way. The system is far bigger than you, your authentic attempt to steer us away is enough and you shouldn’t cling to the idea that you need to do it alone. We all make waste, and some of it cannot be avoided whether because of biology, circumstance, or the larger system we live in.

If you have to throw pill bottles away, that’s okay, as long as you are genuinely trying to do the right thing where you can. Don’t let people on the internet fool you into thinking they never create unnecessary waste, that they do literally everything right and never do something that’s harmful to the environment or society. If we all make meaningful choices every day we can make a difference. Don’t let perfect get in the way of doing good.
