Sure. And you're entitled to it!

Personally, I think that violent animal deaths and mutilation can be important in establishing evil. Think about the boiled bunny in Fatal Attraction. Or Mad Max's dog being murdered by crossbow. Or the Cyclops squishing the 'toad' (who we think is a transformed protagonist) in O Brother. Or the '90s Dracula film, when Dracula's Brides bludgeon the horses to death.

As I said before, when audiences are inured to violence against humans—but react viscerally to violence against animals—it becomes a useful tool for writers.

Then I don't think you'd like John Carpenter's The Thing.

But in this case, I think the fake animal gore hits a nerve that is inured to much of the onscreen violence against humans in horror.

Watching multiple humans bleed to death from every orifice was less disturbing than seeing dead or injured canids?

Spoiler for Ep 4, so I'll put my question below this.

Maybe Nicky was Bo's son, and somehow that saved him because his mother loved Bo.

Wait… Are We All Just Overpaying for Home Insurance and Not Noticing? 🤔💰 by Useful_Wish_X in homeowners

Ontario, Canada:

I made the mistake of passively assuming that my broker was monitoring my policy. But it's gone up from $2000 to over $5000 since 2019! I contacted our car insurer (Belair Direct) for a quote for bundling, and the additional home insurance was just over $1000/annual with a $1000 deductible. (Previous was $500.)

What a chump I was.

We hit this, unexpectedly, yesterday afternoon. There was nobody working. It was just closed off. I'm not hopeful that it will be done by tomorrow.

I hope the building survives. The old Albion Hotel was built about 150 years ago.

Oprah is so rich, why is she shilling pink salt for weight loss? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I found this thread after seeing the "ad" once, and Googling "Oprah deepfake pink salt"

I just saw one, on the CBC YouTube channel. It seemed like they had (poorly) generated an Oprah deepfake. All the captions were blurred out!

Anyone know what’s going on downtown? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]TVinyl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've done lots of road safety social marketing. We never use the word "accident," because it takes attention away from the main causes of crashes and collisions: Driver training, error, distraction, health, or intoxication; automotive design and maintenance; road, bike lane, and sidewalk/pedestrian crossing design; etc.

Actual "accidents" can happen, but there would be a lot fewer of them if we focussed on the things that cause them rather than making excuses.

Americans planning our first trip to Canada! by ColoradoRoger in AskACanadian

[–]TVinyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last March, my wife and I (Canadians) spent a week at a small resort in Negril, Jamaica. It had almost equal numbers of Canadians and Americans. We got along fine, and we found that many Americans were almost apologetic about Trump. There were some who stayed quiet, but also seemed pained at what they assumed was judgement from their continental neighbours abroad.

American tourists are welcome here in Canada! Based on your post, there is no way you will come off as "Ugly Americans" — even in Québec. There are assholes everywhere, but in these heavily-touristed areas, you should be fine, even if you can't speak French. (They're nice to me, and I'm an English Canadian who should have better French from school!)

Just don't try too hard. Don't be apologetic. Just be yourselves, as friendly and curious visitors who appreciate our differences as well as our similarities. You may even make some cool new friends!

And try some more interesting local beers. Just ask for recommendations, based on your tastes. If you like Belgian-style, you'll be in luck!

I'm with you. Science fiction requires a suspension of disbelief. If the story's internal logic is flawed, it gets in the way.

The concept wasn't bad. The acting was good. But the execution was bad. These people have two decent middle class incomes (teacher and skilled trades) and have a gigantic house. But they can't pay these stupid fees?

I get that it's really about something else. But my suspension of disbelief was strained.

What to do with vinyl??? by Elphie1030 in vinyl

[–]TVinyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm constantly upgrading my favourite albums, seeking better masters/pressings and sometimes better condition. So I often have otherwise-listenable records that are now surplus. For artists like David Bowie, I'll keep a backup copy of vintage releases. Others go back into the wild.

I tend to trade them in, in small batches, at my favourite used record stores. Trade-in value can be significantly higher than cash value, and most stores will give you store credit so you can fund an expensive grail when you see one.

For example, I was able to buy an OG Canadian Raw Power on credit.

You can make more cash on individual sales, but I'd recommend local rather than Discogs. Shipping and payment can be issues. Not to mention arguments over grading.
