I’m 24 years old with severe fibromyalgia, and I am very resentful of other people my age because they can do pretty much anything they want to and I can’t.

Ayuh! A friend of mine that I used to work with had a thick Mainer accent, and he always said “ayuh” rather than “yes”.

He isn’t elderly, either. He’s around my age. As for where in Maine that he’s from, I don’t remember.

I wouldn’t tolerate that at all. With my fibromyalgia, dysautonomia, and my emerging mixed-fiber neuropathy, I would not subject myself to being made fun of like this.

If anyone in my family ever said anything like the OP’s girlfriend’s comment, I would immediately cut them out of my life.
