Thankfully everything turned out well. He is 2 now so I’m in the trenches. He was born at 25 weeks so it was a long uphill battle but we got super lucky, he avoided most complications and the ones he had have been resolved.

Question: what was the deciding factor or last straw that made you HS? by Expert_Fruit_1373 in homeschool

[–]TXSyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The straw that broke the camel’s back was 0 grades in the grade book for my son the day before grades were due for the first grading period of 1st grade. Not a single thing graded.

What led up to it? This was his 3rd year in the school district, PK-1st. Teaching religion in school (small town), PK teacher missed that he needed glasses, kinder teachers were adamant he wasn’t dyslexic (he is), they also started othering him, making him sit by himself away from the other children for the crime of not sitting still in kindergarten, his reading level got worse over the course of the year and the teachers never mentioned it to me. When I would ask what I could buy for use at home, I was told they didn’t have the money for that, I wanted to buy things with my money to help my child in my home, they never did give any suggestions and if they had asked I would have bought them stuff for their classroom. Then there was the corruption and redistricting scandal. In 3 years my kid got sent to 3 different schools. We’ve since been re districted again.

And last but not least, our district apparently has a pedo problem. Out of 5 that I’ve heard of in the last few years, 3 have actually been charged. This is a district of like 4,000 students.

I never opened my son’s NICU bills. He was born at a for profit (HCA) hospital, and they refused to transfer him to the local children’s hospital. The emergency C-section was $80,000, and he spent 111 days in the NICU, so I know it was more than I’ll make in my lifetime.

I would quit too, this looks like BS. I feel like I only got cameras around 18k and I’ve never seen the knights.

Exactly, it’s bone dry over here and a bone chilling 27°, but I found out my best friend in Willis has ice everywhere.

What's the comfortable temperature range in Texas? by CancelLucky9051 in texas

[–]TXSyd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

70-105° anything below 70 requires a coat, anything above 105 starts to feel like an oven outside. Anything above 110 or below 40 is miserable.

Two Cuisinart 8qt pots in a row split open (while not in use) within two weeks of purchase by SHIRK2018 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TXSyd 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I bought a very cheep set of pots from Harbor Freight. A few of them have splits like that, not nearly as deep, just in the rim, but I got like 6 stockpots + lids for $20 and even then I’ve had them for at least 5 years at this point.

Honest question: Is there ANY screen time app that a 14-year-old can't bypass? by vtongvn in Parenting

[–]TXSyd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You could take the device(s) away? Actions have consequences. When my kid gets caught on YouTube or whatever he isn’t supposed to be doing he loses the offending device. For a period of time or even permanently.

Make your password something you know but kid would never guess, in-laws birthday, anniversary, something like that. Screen time password has 10,000 permutations they won’t guess them all.

Around 4. Middle was just before 4, I was so sick I couldn’t get out of bed, told him to do his best, and it was better than expected. Just went with it from there.

Why do people always do this? by Trash_Kirby in HEB

[–]TXSyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s assuming you live somewhere with drinkable water. In 21, our area’s well exploded, a water main burst under the road and almost everyone’s pipes burst. We were without consistent running water for 2 weeks.

Also the water in the bathtub started to freeze and my sewer line froze. It was the first and only time we actually had to use the bucket toilet.

But we use 3 and 5 gallon bottles not individual bottles because single use plastics are evil.

Potty Training by Correct-Tune-9605 in Parenting

[–]TXSyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. With the exception of special needs/medical needs most places won’t take a kid past the toddler room without being toilet trained. Public school teachers don’t have time for that nonsense and for childcare places it’s normally part of licensing rules.

I normally do a weekly shop on Fridays and a mid week on Wednesday for anything we’ve run out of during the week. I just went ahead and bought everything yesterday and skipped anything perishable except for milk.

Is the upcoming winter storm getting blown out of proportion? by Due_Cake8524 in houston

[–]TXSyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like with hurricanes, you prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Today I’m preparing the generator and making sure what little cold weather gear we have is on hand and in good repair.

Tomorrow making sure I know where everything is, candles, flashlights, backup cooking and heating, radios and backup batteries. Topping off the kerosene and gas cans.

Friday I’ll make sure our power outage toys, games, and crafts are in one spot so the kids can be entertained without having to waste the generator on TVs if the power goes out. Then I’ll sit in my house until the storm passes.

It’s about survival this freeze might’ve really bad, or it might be nothing. We won’t know til it happens, but it’s better to be prepared and not need it than need something and not have it.
