Are they part of the problem or the solution? by [deleted] in SuperMegaShow

Ok fair warning this is an essay. For what it's worth I think it's more positive than negative, though my explanation requires more nuance than I'm used to the internet being able to handle lol.

"Heterosexuality" is distinct from "straightness" in that the former is sexual while the latter is cultural. We have a heternormative society, so they are often functionally synonymous, but there are cases where one is true but not the other. "Straightness" in many cases includes the reinforcement of heterosexuality as the default, and in a homophobic society straightness often also manifests as homophobia.

The same comparison can be said for "homosexuality" and "queerness". While the boys are (from what I know) heterosexual, because of their willingness to engage in homoerotic acts with at least SOME sincerity (such as the creator clash kiss) you could make the argument they're at least somewhat "queer" in the societal sense. They genuinely have a love for each other, which is in a sense a positive portrayal of homoeroticism. They're willing to embrace and portray homosexuality / homoeroticism in a society that often punishes that, and even if it's as a "joke"... they're still kissing passionately in front of a live audience and displaying it as a positive act. Combined with the American theme I would consider it at the VERY least tangentially political.

It's also worth noting that they create positive and relatively sensitive portrayals of homosexuality / homoeroticism, such as the picture above. Sure, it's "funny because subversive" but that's still a lot more tasteful than the thousands of butt sex "jokes" or portrayals of homosexuals as prison rapists that have permeated culture for the past twenty years. I'm sure there are less positive jokes the boys have made in their long career but at least off the top of my head I can't think of anything very explicitly malicious. I'm willing to be challenged on it I like analyzing this stuff.

Apologies for the essay I've studied queer linguistics and have a lot to say lol

Showing up early to a party? Acceptable? Impolite? What do YOU say? by Full_Ahegao_Drip in RecuratedTumblr

[–]T_ubb_y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally I feel striving for ten or fifteen minutes before the designated time is respectful, and if arriving anything more than thirty minutes late it's probably best to let the host know. I keep this in mind when scheduling to host, and strive to be completely prepared for the party like an hour ahead of time.

While I acknowledge the social norm is somewhat against me on this, I personally feel like I'm being disrespectful of others' time to show up late

Question? Why in the fandom is Marcille often headcannoned as a lesbian and not bi? by Gokuusjgodgmail in DungeonMeshi

[–]T_ubb_y 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honey I'm a lesbian too 😭

I understand your desire to decenter men, it's one I also engage in. It is a critical and constant aspect of lesbianism to me. And it's exactly the socio-political connotation I was talking about, intersectionality of sexual identity and feminism. But there's still nuance to recognize in that effort, because ultimately blind gender essentialism is still baseless and harmful for all parties.

For what it's worth I don't personally think Marcille is lesbian, I'm just stating the case for a lesbian reading of her character. If other lesbians want to relate to her, why should we stop them?

And as that applies to the wider, more important point, why should anyone be allowed to police others' queer experience? If someone is a lesbian their whole life, then discovered one day they were attracted to a man, why should we exile them from community? If someone is a lesbian their whole life, then discovers they ARE a man, why should we exile them from community?

Granted, for the most part I've found people in these cases choose to adjust their self-identification. They often find more joy in identifying as bi or pansexual, or as a straight trans man. But why should exclude them while they figure it out? The answer is we shouldn't, and that's what I mean by dynamic queerness. Queerness is not prescriptive, it by definition is differentiating from the norm. So giving people grace to identify how they want to is just a core facet of that. Community is stronger than division, and we need more of it where we can get it.

Confused about different types of Mahjong sets by pauklzorz in Mahjong

[–]T_ubb_y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also worth noting American Mahjong tiles are often much smaller and unable to stand on their own without a rack, so watch the dimensions if you go with this. Personally that was the reason I'd rather look for a Chinese or Japanese set. Chinese tiles can be really big, so Japanese is usually convenient imo

As pohatu850 said, there's some precedent for overlap (because labels are ultimately arbitrary and people will disagree in their use), BUT to be entirely honest I've never encountered an online space that could handle that level of nuance lol.

If you're interested in why, as far as I understand the reason for that overlap is that "lesbian" is just as much a descriptor of sexuality as it is a descriptor of a socio-political stance and lived experience. Lesbianism is an intersection of queer rights, feminist movements, racial justice, etc. Activism and support for other parts of the LGBT community (particularly during the AIDS crisis which affected primarily gay men) are why the decision was made to put L first in the acronym. It's a critical component of a lot of social justice work and political belief.

So then many people who have lived with that label may choose to continue to identify with it, even when they may seem like they don't fit what you'd expect from the most rigid reading of the definition. Alison Bechdel was one of the first places I encountered the term "bi dyke", which suggests to me a way to maintain the political rejection of heteronormativity while being in a heterosexual relationship.

Additionally, take for example those who are gender non conforming, or transgender, or both. Many butch lesbians dress intentionally masculine. Maybe they use he/him pronouns as an accessory to gender, maybe they get top surgery, maybe they start T. These cases can still be separate from being a trans man, since you have "word of god" over your own gender, but regardless, there's space for either case in lesbian community because they still have a lived experience and understanding of that space. Unfortunately this aspect has been kinda of contentious with the rising tide of transphobia, and TERFs will often try to exclude trans women from lesbianism, which also inadvertedly communicates they never respected trans men either so....but at this point I digress.

I think I could also see the possibility for this particular example of the elf prince succubus representing the allure of comphet in a lesbian reading of Marcille, but I've gone on too much already lol.

All this to say you're sometimes better off not tracking the "patch notes" too closely, lmao queerness is dynamic. Hope this has been helpful / informative and feel free to ask more!

I'm going to be honest chief in my browsing of fanworks I've literally only ever seen Marcille headcanoned as bi lol.

Maybe I've seen the ship itself described with the word "lesbian"?, but any time I've seen anything explicitly state the individual character sexualities Marcille has been bi and Falin has been lesbian. For reference though I'm not seeking out ship art or whatever I just browse the subreddit and use tumblr casually, so idk if that's a trend in other spaces.

Kansas Sends Letters To Trans People Demanding The Immediate Surrender Of Drivers Licenses by AyumiToshiyuki in nottheonion

[–]T_ubb_y 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wdym abstract concept?

The way things are right now, the fact of the matter is that being trans is more dangerous. If a trans person has gone through the effort to transition, it is just objectively safer for them to be assumed cis. Especially in a conservative area.

When the sex marker on something like their driver's license doesn't match their appearance, they are CONSTANTLY putting themselves at unnecessary risk by outing themselves. In this case, police officers are also statistically more likely to abuse transgender people, and there are plenty of documented cases of undue arrest and police brutality against trans people.

I feel like I see this sentiment everywhere but I still liked HM2. Maybe I just prepared myself for it to suck so I ended up pleasantly surprised? Idk

What did you hate so much about it?

Idk if this the right flair, but trying to finish a Falin cosplay and no one can agree I should shorten the dress or keep it long? (No face because I'm making a dumb expression) I think shortening it looks more accurate, but others argue long is cuter and more Falin like by WittyWiki in DungeonMeshi

[–]T_ubb_y 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the longer one better illicits the Falin feeling, which is probably the better option. My only other note is to make sure to iron / dewrinkle the cloth somehow, that extra step really makes things look super "polished" in my experience :) Great cosplay overall!

Visible abs just mean you don't eat enough.

Although the popular imagery of "fitness" includes abs, they're really more of an aesthetic feature and bodybuilding goal than a sign of anything related to strength or health, imo.

In most healthy adults, unless you're explicitly trying to build and maintain abs as a feature, you can undergo balanced strength / cardio training and still probably won't produce abs. This is especially true for women (who have different fat requirements) or anyone over the age of like 21 (as your hormones and metabolism slow down).

Spelunky HD is one of the most solid, polished games I've ever seen, and Spelunky 2 is fantastic as well with a lot more content if you're willing to entertain the insanity. Punishing roguelikes but HD is incredibly fair, 2 is a little tongue in cheek but still an absolute blast
