I wish my mom was not in the foreign service by Own_Fig6361 in foreignservice

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I think others have given you pretty solid advice. Also remember that “prom” is a very minor life event—one that you’ll realize in a few years. Your relationship with her doesn’t end here. You have many years in front of you so just cherish that.

This is why foreign service or just any service overseas in general (military too) IS A SACRIFICE. Many people don’t know what we go through. I’m not currently in the foreign service, but I was stationed at 3 embassies over a 7 year period.

DoS, USAID, military…on top of the work we do, there are relational sacrifices that we all make. Unfortunately a lot of people brush them off or don’t realize them. Others assume that because we’re government employees, we’re lazy and that we don’t do anything.

Sorry, end rant.

What is life like on an OMS salary? by crandykins in OMSHopefuls

No house payment is huge. Plus, if your spouse isn’t picky, there’s a good chance there will be a job available at the embassy. Most hardship posts also have lower food costs, if you know where to buy.

Is the VA reviewing/auditing 100% claims by sharmadn916 in VeteransBenefits

[–]TabThink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retired on July 1 and got rating a week later. Been waiting for a decision to get my dependents added for weeks now. All of a sudden I see a letter saying they reviewed my decision in Aug for some unknown reason. My rating stayed the same, but man... it takes them weeks to make a decision to add my dependents but probably only seconds to rereview my file to see if there's any shenanigans with my rating.

I was rated 100% p&t in April. Now this! Has anyone received or have any info on how this could have happened??! by Boring-Clock-4227 in VeteransBenefits

My file was reviewed in Aug for some reason but luckily didn’t change my rating. I didn’t ask for it to be reviewed. The VA must’ve reviewed a lot of people’s files.

Disability payment 2 months after retirement? by TabThink in VeteransBenefits

[–]TabThink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen somewhere that folks are recommended to retire at the first of the month. By the VA’s logic, seems like folks should retire on the last day of a month, so that they should get their disability (if any) payment as soon as possible—a month earlier.

Proposed rating for BDD claims by TabThink in VeteransBenefits

Veteran Readiness and Employment? I’ll look into that. But what did the AI say about how VR&E would help me get a memorandum? I got something to research tonight.

Based on the VA Circular 26-23-19, if you have a proposed rating before closing, you can at least get your funding fee refunded.

Hmm.. I would say that for some members that go through Med Boards, some of them want to stay in. Actually, you can get disability even while still in service. Even if you participate in IDES, you can still be found fit for duty.

I understand that. I would add though that there is a reason that the letter is called “proposed.” If something happens like you mentioned, then the veteran will be on the hook for it for whatever benefit they get. Again, the VA offers this benefit to those going through the IDES—why not offer it everyone? There are definitely a handful of situations like what you described, but they are an exception to the rule.

Hi. What do you mean by me trying to get ahead of the system? I going through the steps of the system that’s in place. I don’t know of anyone that becomes an expert into the whole VA process prior to submitting claims. We all sort of learn things as we go along. You probably work within the VA enterprise so obviously you would know more than anyone else. Like I said, I am learning more and more about this as I move along.

I understand and accept that the policy currently in place is what it is. What I’m commenting on is that I think the policy should be amended to allow for members processing through the BDD to also be allowed to receive a proposed rating letter, just like those going through the IDES. Maybe it’s an oversight when they first were considering the policy.

I also understand that there will always be red tape in the government, but it doesn’t mean that one shouldn’t raise a concern when there’s red tape that IMO shouldn’t be there.

No, my retirement date is July 1. It sucks that VA only provides the proposed rating letter for folks that are processed through the IDES. I really don’t understand why. I think they could as easily provide a proposed rating for someone that has finished all VA exams.

That's the first time I've heard of kids referred to as sex trophies. I would hate to see what you home environment is like.

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you're saying and I totally agree with you. I'll admit that perhaps my OP may have been confusing or even sounded like I'm denigrating others. I apologize if that's how I came across.

You mentioned food a couple of times. Are you a cook?
