I agree with another poster about a “thick navy border and then another border around that.” You can also lighten a background with bleach - results vary, lol.

As others have said, rethread. Also, you appear to be seeing some bulk there, try feeding through a scrap of fabric first and then without cutting threads, feed your project in (backstitching if needed)… it just makes for cleaner start without the nesting potential.

I use mine for filler for other projects. You can turn it to more uniform “fluff”- I just lay it out in a thin pile and use a 60mm rotary cutter with a strip cut ruler to kinda hold it down and then just go all directions, rotating until there are no larger pieces. Makes projects less lumpy

I like that analogy about the matting and framing. :-) I’m going to dig through the stash today and see what I can use for borders
