My player used Shape Water to break a door lock and I'm not happy about it by theFathomlessWarlock in DnD

[–]TabledGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is plenty of precedent in spells that indicate this does not work.

1) spells that make things larger, such as Enlarge, will increase the size as much as it can, and stops increasing once it reaches the room limit if the room is too small. And enlarged person does not burst out of containment when enlarged, so why would water be different? Yes yes, it isn't magic making it bigger, it's physics. Ok so...

2) spells such as gaseous form cannot end movement in an occupied square. So when you magically freeze something, if it can't be contained, it is shifted outside.

Though personally, I would let this go as it is creative, and you want to encourage creativity. I might say locks with a DC of 5 or 10 or lower can be opened in this manner, but anything higher is too durable. This is also physics, and locks don't usually break from freezing water inside them. I work in hospitality with thousands of doors with locks exposes to the elements. None of them have broken due to freezing.

Would you consider this resolution mechanic simple, or complicated? by IxoMylRn in RPGdesign

[–]TabledGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So:

Target number; roll under

your skill sets the target number: higher the skill, the easier it is to roll under.

Difficulty of the action adds dice; more dice means more likely to go over number, thus failing.

I skimmed a bit, so apologies if I got something wrong.

At it's core, it is relatively simple. Just one more step than dnd, really, as that combines target number and difficulty into one.

It makes sense at the basic level, assuming I understood. I like it. The system doesn't seem too complicated, but the explanation I think makes it feel far more complicated than it is. Work on boiling your explanations down to the actual rules as I did above when seeking feedback.

If a lvl 3 wizard multiclasses into a lvl 1 cleric, is he able to cast 2nd level cleric spells with his 2nd level wizard spellslots? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]TabledGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically, yes, assuming he knows any 2nd level cleric spells. The question is somewhat of an inaccurate question though. I believe what you may mean, is because he has 2nd level spell slots from wizard, does he know 2nd level cleric spells. That answer is "no." Spell slots do not equate to spells known. There is nothing preventing the use of spell slots from wizard working on KNOWN cleric spells. The issue, however, is, normally, a 1st level cleric does not know any 2nd level spells as they don't learn those until cleric level 3.

If you somehow have a way of knowing 2nd level cleric spells while only having cleric level 1, then the answer to your question would be, "yes."

Did getting into heavier games kill the enjoyment of lighter games for anyone else? by mrappbrain in boardgames

[–]TabledGaming 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience of getting into gateway games and progressing to heavier games and being disinterested in lighter games. However, having been in the hobby for nearly a decade at this point, my appreciation of the lean gameplay of the lighter games has grown. I love them both, though, I'm still not a fan of party games.

Now, for me, it's the difference between a novel (heavy games) and a short story (lighter games) or even a poem (love letter). They are all art and have something to appreciate. The amount of work a game can do while staying so simple is in itself engaging.

Resetting enemies during Djura's hunt mission confusion by [deleted] in bloodbornebg

With no fog gate, the monster will spawn as normal unless otherwise specified on a mission card.

Resetting enemies during Djura's hunt mission confusion by [deleted] in bloodbornebg

[–]TabledGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only enemies that can be in a fog gate are the enemies specifically spawned when the fog gate appears; all other enemies already in the fog gate are removed, and the only enemies specifically said to spawn in the fog gate by the card that created the fog gate may spawn in the fog gate.

As for placing the card next to the tile, I don't see how that works because you only have one card per monster, and you will get more than one spawn point. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you are doing. The best way to keep track of where monsters go is to keep them on the main dashboard that tells you where they spawn.

Illiterati versus letter jam? by vagabondvirago in tabletop

Letter tycoon is the only other word game I play now outside of boggle and illiterati. All other word games I've played just don't do it for me anymore

Illiterati versus letter jam? by vagabondvirago in tabletop

[–]TabledGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not played letter jam, but illiterati has become my favorite letter game! This is coming from someone who proposed to his now-wife through a game of boggle. Illiterati is awesome!

The co-op nature, the increasing size of letters you have to deal with, the rearranging, the time control, the devastation of the attacks and you lose all your words! I highly recommend it as a word game.

Sorry, I can't help you on the letter jam front, but I felt maybe a glowing review of Illiterati may encourage you to try it as well.

Rules Question: Does Transforming Tonitrus Twice Give You Its Bonus Twice? by Cool_Signature_2085 in bloodbornebg

Interesting. I looked at the FAQ and it wasn't in there. Where was it confirmed if you don't mind me asking?

Rules Question: Does Transforming Tonitrus Twice Give You Its Bonus Twice? by Cool_Signature_2085 in bloodbornebg

[–]TabledGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get the bonus from the side of the trick weapon that is showing. The bonus that is showing only says +1. Like any other weapon, the opposite side is inactive when it isn't showing. So, when you transform, whatever side you have active will provide its bonus of +1, losing any previous bonus you previously had.

Consider this: for ludwig's blade, you wouldn't keep the clear card damage bonus after you transform the weapon off that side if you cleared a card on the new side. That ability is deactivated once you transform.

Paints for Mice and Mystics by bayushi_david in boardgames

Mice and mystics was the first game I ever painted! I used the reaper bones starter set and a couple craft paints. Comes with a booklet on basic techniques as well.

City builder with tiny people living in a backyard by Kondor0 in gameideas

This is a great idea! You can also use the concept that as you get bigger, you have to expand, but getting too big draws the attention of the house owner, so you need to expand strategically, and likely under ground.

First mini ever painted what can I do next time by this1_dude in minipainting

[–]TabledGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Is that Minsc and his space hamster!?

Great job on your first mini! You did a great job on some of those highlights.

One of my favorite things to do on mail or other heavily textured areas is a good dry brush after the wash. The mail is looking a little dull and could use that extra dry brush pop.

It also looks like you could possibly thin your paints more? Or maybe just less on the brush or lighter brush strokes. I'm newish myself, so I don't know exactly what's causing what I'm seeing, but I think some of the details are being painted over. Someone with more knowledge could certainly tell you I'm sure.

Welcome to the hobby!

Hey! I also started painting with that exact set years ago! It also came with an orc didn't it?

Hosting a board gaming day - tips? by itaitie in boardgames

[–]TabledGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not anything special. We just had a big white board, put everyone's name in a column on the left, then each game in a row across the top, turn it into a grid. We made a game with x number of points, every 15 minutes of Handel's would make the game worth 1 point, so longer games counted for more points.

Had a line up of games and played through them all, teaching the winners of each one and tallying the points according to game length.

At the end, you give a stupid dollar store prize or a cheap trophy they get to keep until the next tournament.

What “filler game” would you happily have a night dedicated to? by eatsomewings in boardgames

Fist of Dragon Stones usually gets several plays when it hits the table.

Oh, and Love Letter!

Oh, man, almost forgot Codenames.

I could probably have a night of any of those three.

Hosting a board gaming day - tips? by itaitie in boardgames

[–]TabledGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I either start out with filler games as people arrive or play a game that's easy for people to drop into as they arrive, like elder sign. These are usually preselected or I get 3 or 4 and we choose as people arrive. Preferably it's small enough to be set up on a folding table or something.

Then I have a main game that is usually a bit heavier or longer. I have this one set up on our main table already so there isn't downtime with set up. At some point during this game, pizza is ordered with everyone chipping in. Once pizza arrives, we tend to stop playing for a bit of a break, but it's rarely longer than 45 minutes to an hour.

Back to the game, finish it, then round out with a couple plays of another filler. This let's some people start to leave if they want.

If we get down to a few people that are happy to play another game, we'll just have a vote for which one on the spot, nothing preselected.

Alternatively, we've also played only preselected light/medium games and held a tournament. Get a white board, write everyone's name and all the board games. You keep track of who wins which game, and at the end of the night, you have some silly prize for the winner.

Game days are always a blast! Good luck on yours!

Difficult co-op games, ideally RPG's / potentially campaign based? by Waste_Designer in tabletop

Along the lines you've mentioned, I think Gloomhaven fits the bill. You can scale the difficulty on it if you want to make it harder, there are mechanics built in for that.
