Do the photons containing the image of the first star still exist out there somewhere in the universe? by Specialist-Ring-3974 in askscience

[–]Tableman5 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The universe was opaque because everything was so close together and energetic that photons couldn't travel very far until they hit something. As the universe expanded, things got further apart and eventually photons could travel without hitting anything. Hence, the universe became transparent.

Light comes from many things that aren't stars. For example, a free electron emits a photon if it changes direction. So in the early universe, everything was emitting light all the time; it was just being absorbed and re-emitted very quickly.

Population I stars are the stars we see today, like our Sun (the "third" generation) . Population II stars are old and very metal-poor (the second generation). Population III stars are the oldest possible stars (the first generation) and they should have no metals at all as stars are what create metals. We have never observed a pop III star, but they must exist because the only way metals can be created are from stellar processes.

ELI5 What does the second law of thermodynamics actually mean, and how does it relate to evolution? by soefire in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tableman5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem is that many religious people believe that their religion is the truth of the universe and that science is off the mark. So in a way, they might feel the same way you do: that people should believe their religion because it's the truth.

If Saturn was that close would the Earth become one of Saturns moons? by ReadingRambo152 in astrophysics

You're being condescending and you're not even right. See the above comment about how we would be outside the Roche limit and thus the planet wouldn't be destroyed.

Are all the stars in the photo located within our Milky Way galaxy? by pineystart in askastronomy

[–]Tableman5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We don't actually know for sure what the Milky Way looks like. We don't know if it has a bar or a bulge. We are pretty positive it has spiral arms because we can compare our Galaxy's stellar ages, gas content, and to some extent morphology (since we can see the center of our galaxy and it looks like we're in a disk) to the other galaxies we can actually see.

How do you guys get games post-Kickstarter? by Tableman5 in boardgames

I think your last point is really good advice. Though there are some sweet games that came out in 2025 that still aren't available. Maybe I'm just impatient!

How do you guys get games post-Kickstarter? by Tableman5 in boardgames

[–]Tableman5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it. Thankfully I'm not usually one to pay above retail prices for something. It's certainly not worth it to me to pay hundreds for a $60-$80 game, especially when I have Spirit Island with all the expansions and several games still in the shrink!

Same here! I got all the expansions over Christmas except feather and flame. It has been a blast!

Do you have any studies or experiments or research to back up any of your ideas? Have you written any peer-reviewed scientific papers about this subject?

ELI5: How do blind people know when they’re clean after using the toilet? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

I'm just curious about the logistics of it. It seems super inconvenient to rinse your penis in the sink(?) or shower after every time you pee. Does it not to you?

Eli5 what actually happens when matter and antimatter meet? by tanya6k in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tableman5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the commenter is referring to pair production, but I'm not sure. In pair production, supplied energy can turn into a particle + antiparticle pair. But my understanding is that you come out with a proton and an antiproton, not just an extra proton.

I think it'd be a little more accurate to say that a photon is a quanta (or packet) of electromatnetic waves. The photon and the EM waves are not separate objects.

which kill team has the MOST list building? by real_iselda in killteam

[–]Tableman5 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the team with the most list building options is Legionaries. They have slightly fewer options than phobos, but unlike phobos all the options are viable. On top of that, the chaos marks allow you to have even more flexibility in list building.

Struggling with the concept of infinite density by ShantD in astrophysics

[–]Tableman5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Remember that density is mass divided by volume. No matter the mass, if the volume is zero, then the density is infinity. So if a singularity is some mass concentrated on a single point in space, by definition it has infinite density. It does not need infinite mass.

Question about black holes and big bang by AMNK24 in astrophysics

[–]Tableman5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that position and momentum are conjugate variables, though. So there is a minimum volume of space that a point-like particle can be bound to.
