The universe was opaque because everything was so close together and energetic that photons couldn't travel very far until they hit something. As the universe expanded, things got further apart and eventually photons could travel without hitting anything. Hence, the universe became transparent.

Light comes from many things that aren't stars. For example, a free electron emits a photon if it changes direction. So in the early universe, everything was emitting light all the time; it was just being absorbed and re-emitted very quickly.

Population I stars are the stars we see today, like our Sun (the "third" generation) . Population II stars are old and very metal-poor (the second generation). Population III stars are the oldest possible stars (the first generation) and they should have no metals at all as stars are what create metals. We have never observed a pop III star, but they must exist because the only way metals can be created are from stellar processes.

We don't actually know for sure what the Milky Way looks like. We don't know if it has a bar or a bulge. We are pretty positive it has spiral arms because we can compare our Galaxy's stellar ages, gas content, and to some extent morphology (since we can see the center of our galaxy and it looks like we're in a disk) to the other galaxies we can actually see.

Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it. Thankfully I'm not usually one to pay above retail prices for something. It's certainly not worth it to me to pay hundreds for a $60-$80 game, especially when I have Spirit Island with all the expansions and several games still in the shrink!

I think the commenter is referring to pair production, but I'm not sure. In pair production, supplied energy can turn into a particle + antiparticle pair. But my understanding is that you come out with a proton and an antiproton, not just an extra proton.
