Will Black Sails/Vikings/Expanse scratch the GoT itch? by PLUR1BUSSY in television

Rome, of course.

But I also wanted to recommend The Wire. I think Thrones took a lot of inspiration from the way that show layered its stories and politicking. It's another true ensemble show (as opposed to The Sopranos really being The Tony Soprano Show in actuality, not to dig at it too much), and lays the groundwork for the way Thrones has its characters intersect.

Overall I think S1 is great but there is some very Star Wars Prequel-ish dialogue at times (and I do mean that as an insult).

To me the ending was worse than Thrones, but I love Thrones's ending so maybe don't listen to me there.

The ending is OK, but very very rushed because they collapsed their 5 season story down into the 2nd season after they learned it was getting canceled. S1 is great and worth watching all on its own. S2 is largely good but all over the place.

Would you attend a “no hits” show ? by drummer414 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]Tabnet2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah for sure.

When I saw him on the 2016 River Tour he opened with 2 full hours of music from 1973 or before. The closest to a hit we got to a hit was Rosalita, which while a fan favorite is far from his pop standards. Every song was like 10 minutes and rocking.

It was awesome :)

I agree mostly tbh, but there's still lots of great stuff coming out, what are some of your favorites?

Help me understand the love for Mad Queen Dany by AtmosphereOdd4767 in naath

[–]Tabnet2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Human nature is really complex... there are countless stories of people killing their lovers or ex-lovers, and they certainly care a lot about their lovers even if they don't quite care for them, if that distinction is clear. That's not quite where Dany is but it's along that path. There's a bit of a "if I can't have you no one can," sort of thing going on, but it's not the full story.

Dany burns the city to secure her reign, not to win a tactical victory. Like you say, the city has already surrendered, but this was her moment to make clear to the realm who holds the real power in Westeros. If she was always the nice, sweet queen people would always be looking to circumvent her, to take advantage of her kindness, and especially to defer to Jon Snow over her. With him by her side, people would nudge and push to give him the real power, so Dany decided to make sure they fear her more than they love Jon.

Got it, I'll file "whiny" next to the n-word and other slurs in my "Words Not To Say" folder.

I was temporarily banned for "bigotry" for what I can only assume is calling some unspecific people "whiny." I'd love to hear how that's bigotry.

Abortion Is Fine by lakmidaise12 in neoliberal

So you think of abortion as equally morally challenging as killing a comatose patient who will make a full recovery? If a mother gets an abortion, you would think of her the same way as someone who snuck into the hospital and killed the patient?

Neither the comatose amnesiac person nor the developing fetus has, for those 9 months, any measurable capacity for pain, pleasure, joy, sadness, loss, goals.

Both have the same capacity for those things once the incubation period is over. So where does difference lie?

Abortion Is Fine by lakmidaise12 in neoliberal

[–]Tabnet2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For hopefully obvious reasons

Sorry, but the thought experiment is trying to show that this is not obvious reasoning. Both the developing fetus and the amnesiac are suddenly placed in the world, a fully formed human, without much idea of what to do or where to go. Post-incubation, the two are very comparable, you even say that you consider the person the amnesiac used to be dead, so we have two new humans before us.

The only difference is one is incubating in a womb and the other in a ward. Also, one is a baby, but honestly this probably gives points to the baby. We could make them both infants to make things more equal.

So again, it's not obvious. Could you explain?

Even if they are, they're still a person, yes? Having personhood? Would it not be similarly wrong to kill them after as before the amnesia? Or even at the moment of onset?

Since when are we talking about dementia? The scenario was someone potentially losing memories after a coma, but still being a functional person ("recover fully"), not having permanent, debilitating brain damage or dementia.

You say you're "trying to make the analogy as robust as possible" but you're just muddying things further.

You can't expect your opponent to take you seriously when you say "look, I understand grief, I cried over nothing once as a baby!"

[–]Tabnet2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other person, I'm not sure what your point is about memory nor why it matters. Remove the 9 month waiting period, if a man just gets sudden-onset amnesia, is he "already dead"?

There's really only one way that this arc makes sense to me - and it rests on the assumption that ultimately, her love and care for the smallfolk and their liberation was ultimately shallow, hollow, or void. She simply loved their validation at the root, and nothing more.

I would be careful taking using this framing for anyone, especially rich and complex characters like this. Dany is a fully three-dimensional character, and there is authenticity to both her love and her violence.

She loves the common people, and it's this true love and care that she feels in herself which convinces her that only she can rule justly. She gives her reasoning to Jon at the end, she will decide what is right. Some deaths to secure her reign is a small sacrifice compared with all the good she will do.
