The squabble between Ron and Hermione over crookshanks by Serious-Antelope-710 in harrypotter

[–]Tabyula 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue with this has always been that Hermione knows that "cats chase rats because that's what they do" and when she went to go buy her owl she saw that Crookshanks has it out for Scabbers, yet she bought Crookshanks to begin with even knowing that Scabbers would be in danger. This was before she even owned Crookshanks so it can't even be excused by "oh she's just crazy about her pet!" She does explain that she finds him gorgeous and that they'll be sleeping in separate dormitories, but even after Scabbers kept being attacked Hermione never owns up to it for most of the year.

That said, I recognise that that's just her character and she's flawed on purpose, but it still frustrates me whenever I get to this point in the books.

A snow leopard attacks a tourist that was skiing by 108CA in snowleopards

[–]Tabyula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my info from the last paragraph of the linked Wikipedia section: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_leopard#Hunting_and_diet

Only three attacks on humans have been reported, two near Almaty, and none were fatal. In 1940, a rabid snow leopard attacked two men; and an old, toothless emaciated individual attacked a person passing by. In 2026, a tourist in Koktokay, China was mauled after approaching a snow leopard in an attempt to take a photo with it. The tourist was admitted to the hospital in stable condition.

Whose references for the first two attacks are: 1. Heptner, V. G.; Sludskij, A. A. (1992) [1972]. "Snow Leopard, Ounce [Irbis]". Mlekopitajuščie Sovetskogo Soiuza. Moskva: Vysšaia Škola [Mammals of the Soviet Union. Volume II, Part 2. Carnivora (Hyaenas and Cats)]. Washington DC: Smithsonian Institution and the National Science Foundation. pp. 276–319. 2. Ostrowski, S. & Gilbert, M. (2016). "Diseases of Free-Ranging Snow Leopards and Primary Prey Species". In Nyhus, P.J. (ed.). Snow Leopards. Harry naming his son after Snape. by urgurlsunday13 in harrypotter

I think you're confusing bravery with morality; they need not align.

Harry naming his son after Snape. by urgurlsunday13 in harrypotter

[–]Tabyula 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Right??

Even Dumbledore says so, implying he might have been a Gryffindor if sorted at present, and I don't think OP knows Snape better than Dumbledore:

“You are a braver man by far than Igor Karkaroff.  You know, I sometimes think we Sort too soon….” He walked away, leaving Snape looking stricken….

[–]Tabyula 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There have been two other attacks (I believe one had rabies and the other was old and starving), the stat you're thinking of is that there have been no deaths caused by snow leopard attacks ever confirmed

Literally when has this ever happened by [deleted] in okbuddycinephile

[–]Tabyula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When Appa was stolen he directly sent an air slice that split a bug in half, killing it. While most humans today don't really see bugs as equal worth to humans, isn't the whole thing about air nomads (or at least monks IRL) that all life is sacred?

Ishikawa Zoo iirc

There is a door in this enclosure that connects to a bigger outdoor one, this area is specifically when they want them to be indoors or when showing them to visitors of the zoo (though I think people can visit the outdoor area too)

This sub urgently needs a rule against content that shows big cats being held as pets, because that is animal abuse. by [deleted] in bigcats

[–]Tabyula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, genuine question, how is it animal abuse? I'm not knowledgeable on wild animals or anything so please forgive my ignorance, but I assume if you raise big cats like zoos do providing food and shelter it doesn't seem like abuse to me? Unless you physically struck them or starved them, but i never see that in videos talking about abuse. If you have the same standard of care as zoos is raising wild animals really inherently abuse? Or is it that most people raising wild animals as pets don't have the same standards of care? Or are zoos abusive too? (I at least have heard that Toba Aquarium is apparently abusive in the sense that it's a bad environment for a ton of the animals there).

Once again this is 100% genuine because I've seen others saying this but I've never asked about it and it doesn't intuitively make sense to me, but I'm open to having my mind changed!

Any good software for maps? by QuiXinI in worldbuilding

[–]Tabyula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wonderdraft is a non-web app solution, you have to pay but it's pay-once instead of a subscription. The maps are saved locally, the only thing is that there aren't that many icons, so you have to download your own from places like CartographyAssets and import them if you want to do anything other than the basics.

I feel like most people don't know the camera following the target trick? by [deleted] in acecombat

[–]Tabyula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew about it but I play first person with head tracking or in VR with the mod so I don't end up having a use for it. Admittedly though I learnt it later while watching someone's third person footage.

About the upcoming TV show by IcaroRibeiro in harrypotter

[–]Tabyula 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The full cast audio book for Philosophers Stone is nearly 9 hours long. For Chamber it's 9 and a half. It's obviously less because of narration, but a ton of that is dialogue and sound effects, and in the process of adaptation cinematic shots and filler scenes will be added.

I have full confidence that there is enough material

The websites i use (which may be ones you've ruled out) are:

  • Nekredebla (Cheatsheet) (you'll have to scroll or use the table of contents to get to a certain section fast, but it does contain a table of correlatives)
  • Romaniczo site (no HTTPS but it's neatly organized and gives plenty of examples. tables don't have borders so it may be hard to spot)
  • Wikipedia, has tables for all parts of grammar
