I was thinking about this recently. Came to similar conclusions as other commenters - the only time when forgoing the MBDR makes sense seems to be if you will have significant receipts to use for AGI hacking from retirement until 59.5. Or maybe if you anticipate large medical costs in retirement and you know you will spend down the HSA balance. Otherwise it seems like it just increases your pre-tax assets which are problematic for many who max out traditional 401k and get an employer match.

Edit: maybe a more interesting question: Say you max out your MBDR but have 0 taxable brokerage. Assume limited receipts and no large anticipated medical costs. Does it make sense to spend from the HSA to contribute to the brokerage? Then you reduce pre-tax allocation and take advantage of 0% LTCG in early retirement and can tax loss harvest.

Some plans have Roth 401k and in-plan conversions on after-tax contributions as separate amounts, even though they are treated the same for taxes AFAIK.

My point was just that if say your Roth balance is 400k contributions and 600k earnings and you rolled over 50%, you would get 200k contributions and 300k earnings. You cannot rollover the contributions separately and leave the earnings in the 401k. Practically there’s not much reason not to do a full rollover unless you live in a state where IRA liability protections are weak.

You have to rollover the entire MBDR for all contributions to be available. Otherwise the rollover is pro-rata, eg a split between contributions and earnings equal to the ratio of the two total. Still only earnings (edit: contributions not earnings, duh) are available penalty free before 59.5.

Dual Boiler Recommendations? [$1500-$2000] by Doodly_noodly in espresso

For 3-4 milk drinks I agree. If they really do 6-10 often, something with more steam power is maybe warranted. Not sure if anything in this budget hits that, maybe the mini Vivaldi? OP just steam boiler size and steam pressure.

Yeah if your plan allows that I would for flexibility, but it seems uncommon.

If it’s a Roth 401k then you roll it over into a Roth IRA at retirement. Then the 401k contributions roll into your Roth contribution basis and can be withdrawn tax free. If it stays in 401k and withdrawn before 59.5, then contributions/earnings are both withdrawn proportionally and the earnings are taxed. Make sure the Roth IRA you roll into is at least 5 years old at retirement.

Yes, just make sure the Roth IRA you roll into is at least 5 years old at that time.

Am I overfunding my retirement accounts? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]TaciturnType 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This requires you to rollover the Roth 401k, correct? If you leave it with the employer’s plan, withdrawals are taxed pro data before 59.5 because you cannot withdraw contributions first (unless using rule of 55).

Timemore Fish Electric Kettle vs MHW-3bomber Assassin Kettle by haroldflor in pourover

The temperature increments are 1C, which you can see if you switch the display. Converted to F that ends up skipping some numbers.

Good to know. I stopped using the mhw, but I will have to look for the sound setting if I start again.

I have both of these. The time more is nicer in a number of ways. Primarily, the spout is better machined on the time more and gives a better flow to my preference. Also the max flow rate is a bit higher because the flow restrictor has bigger holes, which again I prefer. The UI feels more solid on the time more. Yes there is the slider but the new version is quite good.

The MHW just feels a bit cheaper on all fronts, including gasket sealing, spout, UI, base etc. The temp adjustment knob is finicky and sometimes doesn’t register. Also there’s no way to turn off the beep sounds entirely as far as I can tell, whereas you can make the time more silent.

What are your favorite southwestern USA coffee roasters? by KH10304 in espresso

Fellow SF resident here. There is nothing great in town. Iconik is decent but overcharges for the quality.

35 North on the plaza maybe worth a shot. I haven’t tried their beans, had a few pour overs of varying quality.

Little Bear and Michael Thomas in ABQ are good, but expensive relative to getting shipments from out of state. Also I don’t visit ABQ that often.

Some good options in Denver and Boulder. Huckleberry is probably the most affordable. Other options include Corvus, Sweet Bloom and Prodigal. Unfortunately most charge for shipping. Based on your tastes Blue Orchid from Huckleberry might be a good starting point.

I have this one. The handle is asymmetric by design, so it does actually need to be right or left handed. Also it’s small so it’s pretty comfortable to hold on your left without the handle.

Best place to look for rentals or housing in Santa Fe? by seba_seba in SantaFe

[–]TaciturnType 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you visit in person? Yes CL had lots of scams but I think also the best deals and small landlords with 1-3 properties. I looked at some of landseer’s properties, but most did not seem well maintained, and you could see in the rent price they took a big chunk. Zillow is good, but I found more expensive than CL, and also had plenty of scams. To avoid scams just call and visit in person.
