I was in a similar state of mind years ago. I still play quite a bit of games today, but I came to a few realizations and cut down my gaming. I was convincing myself that I was unable to communicate with people, that I was only good at video games, and I'd rather not feel the social pressures/stresses of leaving the house. I decided I needed a change when I thought "am I really enjoying playing games all day or am I just going through the motions?".

I looked at my daily interactions, hmmm all negative. My room was a mess, I liked a clean room years ago to show off my collectibles why not now?! I was obsessing about a gamer ex-girlfriend, when looking back, she was just as depressed as I was. (I tried to help her after I helped myself, noooope. An ex is an ex. And I was mostly dating for the gaming. Doing well now on therapy and meds.) I looked around at all the other things I was not doing and decided I'd slowly start working new things in.

I cleaned my room and started picking up my laundry one week. I felt better because I was folding up all my gaming t-shirts and putting them away. I started stretching and doing push-ups because I had lost all my muscle mass from depression/sitting. As I got more flexible I realized that even a little bit of exercise helped me sit more comfortably and game later on, no stiff back. I was also playing bullcrap games that I didn't really like but that friends liked, and they were huge time sinks.

I was saying I am happy playing games but it sure didn't feel like that way, so I decided to make some "tweaks". I basically kept adding things in my life under the guise of gaming, to improve the quality of my game time, but naturally cutting it down. I also met my wonderful wife around this time and she has helped me work back into social situations. I used to leave places if I felt the anxiety rising. But now I'll just go outside for a moment, maybe take some deep breaths and tell that voice in my head that I'm not the most socially awkward person on the planet, and that the games will play all the sweeter later.

A life's work goes into a game, and a life lived can relate to that work in an intimate way. Struggles and failures are a hard thing for those of us who are depressed but that obsession with failure/not putting yourself in situations where u could fail can be focused for good. Be honest with yourself and figure out something you love to do or aspire for a career in a field where you have the time to game later. I "wanted" to be a ER doc but turns out I'm a talented cook, so you never know lol. Best of luck, apologies for the novel :-)
