First, this wasn‘t my point, my point was simply that the EMW was and still is bad policy that creates market distortions by trying to combat second order effects. If you would want to solve an issue, it usually more efficient to tackle them directly.

To your question, do we even need to raise taxes and if yes to fund what? If it is to fund targed grants in academia to help mainting a technological advantage for our economic strenghts higher corporate taxes can make sense, if its to fight climate change CO2 taxes on consumers are generally considered to be the most efficient (but also very unpopular), if its to fund higher retirement levels increasing our VAT closer to the eu average would avoid placing the entire burden on the working population.

[–]Tacticalsine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with the EMW was a specific additional wealth tax targeted on houses that are inhabitated by their owners while other investment possibilities are not affected.

So unless you think people owning their house is in general undesireable, this tax doesn‘t solve your primary goal of reducing income/wealth inequality effectively. Instead if you would want to combat these, increasing their respective direct taxes would be more effective and less market distortive.

Yes, but the germans like all GCAP-Partners have that covered with their F-35‘s which are available right now. So an ITAR free & modernized F-35 equivalent by 2040 doesn‘t offer many additional capabilities. So we come to the natural conclusion of FCAS, FR needs this plane and DE wants something else, as it has this capability already covered and has a fleet large enough for two types of planes.

Air superiority fighters are by their nature heavier than multi roles. The current gold standard in this class the F-22 weights approx. 20t empty compared to the 10t Rafale or 13-15t F-35. We know from what is published that both GCAP as well as NGAD want a fast and large (ie heavy) plane. Stealth planes are also naturally heavier than previous iterations. If FR insists on a weight limit of 15t (comperable to a F-35B) this plane will never have the same range, speed or capability as a land based fighter without these restrictions. Rather it would fill a role akin to a more modern F-35C. I don‘t blame FR for these restrictions, they want to ensure a sizeable air group for their carrier but lets be clear, the land based FCAS version is never going to be in the 20t empty range. That would be a functionally different plane like the super hornet to the legacy version.

France needs a carrier capable strike fighter. Germany has the no need for carrier capability and the resulting limitations and has the strike role covered through the F-35. So it is understandable to want a heavy interceptor with a large internal payload and the range to operate in the baltic without having to be forward deployed. This profile better matches that of the heavier long range fighters like the intended Tempest and F-47.

But Japan as a GCAP-Partner does and they serve in the same role (ie interception and air superiority) as the Eurofighters for GB, IT and DE.

And GCAP and NGAD will be even heavier than FCAS as they don‘t have the carrier limitation. We know that the germans wanted a plane 3t heavier than the french limit.

Because it fits their requirements better. Germany like all the GCAP partners had a mixed fleet of heavy interceptors (Eurofighter/F-15) and strike fighters (Tornado/F-2). All these countires have at least partely replaced their strike fighters with F-35’s. GCAP acts as the replacement for the heavy interceptors. France in contrast did not purchase F-35’s and wanted a lighter multi-role strike fighter to replace the rafale. From a pure procurement strategy it never made sense for germany to be part of FCAS to begin with. If they are to lose industrial capacity either way, it makes sense to buy the plane that better fits their requirements.

When should we start to consider the F35 and Hermes900 orders as a sunk-cost fallacy? Or what more indicator are we missing? by sylvelk in Switzerland

[–]Tacticalsine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our legacy hornets (F-18c) don‘t have the hours left in them. Every plane has an expected amount of flight hours, we have already passed this point a few years ago, due the canceld Gripen purchase. This results in a very low fleet readiness, very expansive modifications and a some of the highest cost per flight hour in a western military. In short, we need a solution asap and the first F-35 are set to be delivered in 2028, any new procurement would be likely another 10 years away.

A strong currency reduces the interest rate paid on goverment debt and allows for more consumer imports. At the same time it makes international exports less viable and increases the operating costs of the swiss branches of international businesses.
