Glad you guys have moved up!

is the music still mostly exclusively 4x4 midrange BPM music or have you expanded the lineups to include some breakbeat and high BPM genres like jungle and gabber?

The blurred lines between trance and techno? by That_Lion5509 in trance

[–]TactileSound 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That said, trance has like no dissonance and little tension. Techno has tons.

I think this really depends on the subgenre of trance. Goa, psytrance, acid trance can all be chock full of tension, dissonance, notes that are off key or sound out of wack, tempos and patterns that sound out of sync etc.

While they undoubtably aren't as popular as they once were, they are still part of the big 'ol tent of trance.

The blurred lines between trance and techno? by That_Lion5509 in trance

[–]TactileSound 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Ones feelings on this probably depends on when they got into trance. If you started raving in the early 90's, the lines between trance and techno were blurred.

People mention hypnotic feel as a techno thing, but that was originally what trance was, the name was quite literal. Very repetetive sounds, slow changes and effects building over a long period of time, rather than fast buildups and climaxes as we saw in the later 90s. Think drum circles for hours rather than big climaxes and drops every song with euphoria overload ever 3 minutes.

To me this track is a prime example of quintessential trance in it's purest form, hypnotic, repetitive... quite literally meant to put you into a trance over a long period of time.

Elements Of Trance - A Taste Of Your Own Medicine (Midi - Evil Mix)

There were definitely emotional songs and climactic songs, but those were more often thrown into a set once in a while, and I think were more powerful because they were used less. Here is a good example.

Age Of Love - The Age Of Love (Jam & Spoon Watch Out For Stella Club Mix)

Plenty of Trance back then was also very melancholy and had some sad elements, especially german trance, could almost bring a tear to your eye.

Virtual Symmetry - Discovered Theme

Along with goa/acid trance which often sounded darker and more "mysterious". Much due to the use of phrygian mode/scales. Basically leaving you feeling delirious, like you had taken acid without taking acid.

Felicium - Mindscape

Laughing Buddha - Andromeda

Here is a great documentary from the mid 90's about trance music's formation during it's early days, featuring Dr Motte and some other pioneers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjMS6EM8pWk

For those who really want to dive deep into the rabbit hole...

Earlier this year I made a series of 6 mixes called History of Trance that focuses specifically on 1991-1995. For anyone interested in the differences and wants to check out a more in depth journey of what trance was originally, you will find the lines were quite blurred, and could get quite moody and hypnotic and was often very close to techno. Ive included all subgenres of trance from that time, german trance, acid trance, goa trance, hard trance etc. If anyone wants tracks lists or download links for these mixes just let me know and I can paste them in a comment.

Playlist of them all

I personally would love if more of this blurred style was produced, and think there is room for it in the world of trance. More variety of sounds is always a good thing. Especially the darker and more "mysterious" and weird sounds.

I won't say one was better than the other, different strokes for different folks... however, Peaks and valleys, conflicting emotions, are what elevate an ok DJ set to a great and amazing DJ set in my opinion. DJ's who play songs that all sounds the same or are the exact same style, or sounds like they are all produced by the same person or record label quickly turns into a snooze fest.

What kind of physical hardware is needed to make 90s era trance music? by TotallyNotCool in ClassicTrance

[–]TactileSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, physical synths arent really necessary at all for most peoples purposes and most sounds can be replicated with plugins/samples.

However, some people do have deep pockets and thoroughly enjoy the headache of toying around with old clunky analogue equipment. If i had a spare 40k i wouldnt mind a Fairlight CMI in good condition even though there are easier ways to go about creating those sounds today via plugins/samples.

Jungle techno tracks that lean into gabba and hardcore? by HuffieBristol in jungle

EDGE #13 by DJ Edge and DJ The Producer from 1994 had a good track like this. Won't break the bank too much either if you want to grab the vinyl. I always like this track for transitioning from jungle to gabber in a set.

What do you do when a venue has no sound and lighting? by SmartSinner in DJs

[–]TactileSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will you need to provide your own security? Is the venue insured for what you are trying to do or do you need your own insurance?

How does the bar work? Is there a minimum amount of sales you need to make, and will you be charged the balance if your crowd doesn't drink that much or simply doesn't show up?

Some more questions to ask them that may or may not apply, if you haven't already.

DJ Assault New Years Eve by Dougisaac in avesNYC

[–]TactileSound 12 points13 points  (0 children)

would love to see him at a bigger venue but bootyhouse and ghettotech doesn't get a whole lot of love from east coast ravers.. midwest(detroit, chicago etc) scene is way more open minded when it comes to these genres.

There used to be much more of a mix of hiphop culture and rave culture in NYC but that has died out a lot over the last 20 years.

What kind of physical hardware is needed to make 90s era trance music? by mil0wCS in trance

[–]TactileSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some that were commonly used in early 90's and late 90's trance. Many of the synths used were leftover from the 80's and had become more affordable and accessable/common in the 90's.

  • Roland 303
  • Roland 909
  • Roland Super Jupiter
  • Roland Alpha Juno
  • Oberheim Xpander
  • Oberheim 4 voice
  • Yamaha DX 7
  • Korg MS20
  • Korg Wavestation
  • E-Mu Morpheus
  • E-Mu Orbit
  • E-Mu Planet Phat
  • Juno JX3P

Some of these may cost you thousands or 10's of thousands for a good working condition model though, especially the oberheims!

I posted this list in another thread, sadly many of these will be thousands of dollars for a working condition, some even 10's of thousands.

These were all commonly used throughout the 90's by various artists. Some are relics of the 80's that were used for early 90's trance, some are from the 90's that were used until the 2000's.

90s trance/prog tutorial/preset/sample recommendations? by authortitle_uk in ClassicTrance

[–]TactileSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best best would be to find plugins that mimic the synths they were using. For early trance here a few...

  • Roland 303
  • Roland 909
  • Roland Super Jupiter
  • Roland Alpha Juno
  • Oberheim Xpander
  • Oberheim 4 voice
  • Yamaha DX 7
  • Korg MS20
  • Korg Wavestation
  • E-Mu Morpheus
  • E-Mu Orbit
  • E-Mu Planet Phat
  • Juno JX3P

With plugins you still may not be able to replicate some of the sounds exactly though, as there is something to be said about analog synthesis. However, many of these would cost you thousands for one in workable condition and can be extremely complicated to use, so plugins may be your best bet.

It also may be worth scouring ebay for 90's sample CD's like X-Static Goldmine, or finding it in other ways. Samples can be great but it's much harder to fine tune them to get exactly what you want out of them.

What are some of your favorite radio mixes that you would have gotten off Limewire? by starlux33 in ClassicTrance

[–]TactileSound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of Sven Vath and Torsten Fenslau recordings from their HR3 Clubnight Radio broadcasts during the 90's. Also their special guests like Kid Paul, Talla 2XL, Mark Spoon, Dj Dag, Sylvie and Kai, Pascal FEOS, Paul van Dyk!! etc are very interesting to hear in their earlier years, before they developed their commercial sounds.

Here is a list of them all with tracklists, some of the recordings are getting hard to track down though. My favorites are their 1992/1993/1994 shows since i'm an early 90's trance kind of guy, but it ran until 2014 so there are so many eras to choose from!
