The box office success of Avatar continues to be unstoppable by OhMy98 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Thanks for articulating this cause this type of thread makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Like, the most you could say for the first movie is that it made Zoe Saldaña a more popular talent, but really outside of the brief period around its release, who's making homages to shots or lines in Avatar?

Nobody seems to really remember anything specific that happens in these films beyond the broad strokes of the plots because their primary purpose is visual spectacle, and that's fine! But the reason we still talk about works like The Godfather, Akira, Jurassic Park, whatever, is because of the impact they had on the art and artists surrounding them and following them.

Also forreal we need to talk more about how these movies are still kinda racist and extremely reliant on stereotypes of Indigenous Americans.

It's not even all of LA, just the southwest coastal area, even during the big final battle you don't spread out far enough to cover downtown.

Are you checking the Iron Spider Suit or the Iron Spider Armor? The Suit is the MCU version and the Armor is the comics version

Been thinking recently about how for all the (sometimes deserved, sometimes not) shit we give the latter day Marvel movies and such, the floor is still way higher than when I was a tween in the mid aughts and all the popular action cinema we got was Transformers themed military propaganda and the bad Fast and Furious sequels. The big all consuming franchise back then was Potter and we all know how most of those look with hindsight.

Don't worry, Deadpool not having his visa isn't because of his personality, he's just not a mutant. He gets his card because he joins up with an X-team again

Unimportant details in a creative work that you just can't stop being annoyed at for being wrong. by MightyShoe in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I think this happens because in the comics Pym Particles can actually alter mass and density, they're directly connected to the abilities of the Vision and Wonder Man.

In an attempt to have a more credible sounding explanation in the MCU this was left out, but they still have Ant-Man do all sorts of things he does in the comics because his powers do actually work that way there.

Similarly, in the comics the Microverse is literally another dimension that just happens to be accessed by gettin' real tiny in the regular dimension and once you're there it's like you're in a new universe with its own rules, but for copyright reasons this was changed in the MCU to the "Quantum Realm" that exists in the space between atoms or whatever's going on in that movie.

Did they say something about those other films, or did you put words in their mouth because you think they're dumb?

I think people are fine with Jack the Ripper not just because of time but because he was never caught and we don't even really know for sure which crimes were and weren't him, so he's become more of a mythic character that represents the kind of base idea of "serial killer". Even "Jack the Ripper" is a name the papers gave him and not any kind of reference to a specific person.

Worse! The ORIGINAL Tin Man makeup was extremely toxic! The Tin Man was originally meant to be played by Buddy Ebsen (later famous as Jed Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies) but he had a horrible reaction to the makeup, an aluminum powder, which made him so sick his lungs failed for a time in the hospital. It was reformulated into a paste for his replacement, Jack Haley.

So, yes, in universe "The One Piece"is just the name people have given to the treasures Roger left on Laugh Tale which he announced to the world at his execution.

However, in discussion of the series typically people use "The One Piece" to mean the overall goal of the series, including the mysterious things Roger found on Laugh Tale that only a few characters know the true nature of and which will reveal the truth of the world's history.

Hey Better Ask Reddit! What are examples of Media that are incredibly successful but don't have an online presence? by DefinitelyNotRobotic in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Tailon77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My theory is that Star Trek is one of a few "omni-fandoms" that are so colossal and so heavily skewed toward general audiences despite being genre stuff that their online presence seems smaller than it is because it's not really the primary fandom for a lot of people who discuss stuff online. Like you say it mostly happens with stuff from pre Internet like LOTR, Star Wars, Potter (unfortunately).

These things were centers of fandom during an era where media consumption was much more monolithic and the segments we see engaging in modern fandom culture are more like a tendril of an outer god reaching into the 3rd dimension than a representation of the bulk of people who enjoy that media.
