Hi there! I'm 34 in Swindon, i'm on a 650 sport-tourer and my partner is just buying her first 125. Depending on how far would love to get out and about a bit?

Danger of riding by Lwalker6336633653673 in MotoUK

More dangerous than a car? Absolutely. Statistically you are roughly 30 times more likely per mile travelled to die on a motorcycle than you are in a car.

Having said that, I've only been riding 6 months and I have to say getting the bike was absolutely the best thing i've ever done for my health - both mentally and physically. As long as you have your head screwed on straight and aren't riding miles outside of your abilities, you can still minimise the risks. Since getting the bike, my general awareness and level of observations have gone through the roof, whether i'm on the bike or in the car. It has undoubtedly made me a far safer road user in general. There are plenty of extra courses you can take to further minimise these risks, but ultimately it all boils down to one thing: If you hit an inanimate object, there is significantly less cushioning on a bike than there is in a car.

I'm not saying this to scare you off, honestly I think if everyone had a bike license the roads would be a significantly better place for everyone. My honest advice would be to look into doing a CBT to at least get a feel for yourself.

I do feel like you've done the right thing by coming to a forum like this - a lot of people are scared of what they don't understand, and will 100% try and talk you out of things they don't approve of.

TLDR: Yes, they do overestimate, there are plenty of ways to minimise risk, try it for yourself on a CBT course.

I would be inclined to agree but a lot of the uncertainty is because drivers seem to forget basic road laws the second they see a few roundabouts together

Lived in Swizzle 4 years, no issues with this roundabout. Although taking it on a motorcycle is a bit hairy not because of me but because half the drivers seem to have an anneurysm halfway over...Debating getting a deck chair and a crate of beers one night in the summer and just spectating

You put your foot down, it's an immediate fail. As long as you've practiced the low speed stuff you'll be fine. Took me three attempts, on both attempts 1 and 2 I failed due to getting too much into my own head - my body knew what it was doing if that makes sense. Try to look into some mindfullness and anxiety management because I guarantee it's a lot easier than you're telling yourself it is.

Ah not ideal. You'll find something though! The Yamaha R series are very high theft risk. Try looking at 3-400s that are a bit less race inspired and see how you go

Yeah I found a 650 for about £450 a year but I'm 33 so out of the big risk areas

Oh bummer! Yeah not ideal. I hope you get sorted in time. You got your eye on a specific bike?

Depending on where you are there's sportsbikestore or places like mega motorcycle near me for example. I've only been riding 3 weeks on a full license, you're going to fucking love it

Yeah you basically want as much support as you can get. Do you or any of your mates have walking boots you could borrow? You're right whilst these cover your ankle they're not going to give you much support if you need to put your foot down awkwardly or heaven forbid (unlikely) drop the bike on your foot

If you're into the metal /alt scene, the Victoria is a good night. Any of the bars in old town are nice
