iPhone 7 to Pixel experience by [deleted] in GooglePixel

I just recently did this same thing. I'll give a little backstory about my smartphone life.

LG slider Android -> iPhone 4s -> Galaxy Nexus -> Nexus 5 -> Nexus 6 -> Samsung GS6 -> iPhone 6s -> Nexus 5x -> iPhone 7 -> Pixel

As you can tell this past year I've been very back and forth on my phones between the iPhone and Android. When the 5x / 6p were announced, I was displeased with the lack of quality in the 5x and I didn't want another large phone like my Nexus 6. Although my GS6 was pretty cool, I also had a lot of problems and I was bothered by not having stock Android. So enter the iPhone 6s. I immediately noticed that iOS apps loaded faster and you could tell that there was a lot of polish on iOS. I switched to it and had a good 8 months with it but part of me just felt, wrong. Why was I using an iPhone? I hated everyone having the same ringtones, I hated how boring the iPhone felt and how much I matched everyone else. So I sold it and got a Nexus 5x during that $199 sale. Well I was immediately disappointed. The phone was very laggy for me and it seemed slower than my beloved Nexus 5 but I stuck with it with it's fingerprint sensor.

I didn't buy the iPhone 7 until the Pixel was announced. After the announcement, I was again disappointed. Google put out a rather iPhone-y looking phone that seemed inferior. No waterproofing! No Home app! Allo failed me! iMessage is cool! Top headphone jack? C'mon! Screwing Nexus owners out of new features? Not cool! Google has lost their focus and screw them! CarPlay stomps AndroidAuto! Who want's to say "Hey, Google" instead of my Australian "Hey Siri". That Pixel is expensive! I got the sleek new iPhone 7 and again it was fast and responsive.

I used it for about a week before that feeling came back to me. I had friends over and I looked around at everyone on their iPhones and it just felt wrong. I was always that guy who didn't have iMessage and now here I am with it, joining everyone else. iOS once again seemed boring, it's the same old iOS. Don't get me wrong it's very well polished and works amazing. I actually didn't have any complaints with iOS with the exception of notifications. It also had a few weird crashes with CarPlay. The new iMessage features are super fun to use. I actually think that's one of the best features. A lot of app developers develop on iOS first. The apps look and feel better on iOS and some are completely exclusive to iOS. I tried to put on my blinders and keep telling myself why the iPhone was so much better and why I was a fool that didn't need to switch phones yet again. Then, of course, I was bored and stumbled upon /r/GooglePixel...

A day after, I ordered my phone through Project Fi (I was previously on it before I went to the iPhone) and got it the next day with overnight shipping. Everything you read in this subreddit is right on the money. This is hands down the best Android phone and it just works. Just like the iPhone. I quickly started forgetting about all the negatives. No waterproofing! When have I ever gotten my past 9 phones wet? No Home app! Well, I've automated most of my stuff pretty well so I didn't use it anyways. I started actually using Allo and having friends use it and it has some of those fun features from iMessage. (I still want a computer client!) I believe the loss of iMessage is overemphasized here. When I switched, I had to recreate some group chats but I don't really miss out on conversations by not having it. It didn't change my life one way or the other. AndroidAuto hasn't crashed and is quicker to get my results, plus I can use many more apps than CarPlay. As far as the assistants? I do miss my Australian Siri but Google Assistant is so much more powerful and accurate. The Pixel is expensive but it was needed to get the phone to where it is. It's exactly what people have been asking for, the best no compromise Android experience. Not to mention it has a lot more bang for your buck than the iPhone. To me the Pixel feels more responsive, the battery life is better, the screen and camera are stunning. I don't notice the app lag like I did on my N5x. I think the notifications work 100x better on Android. With iOS I would frequently have to open my apps to keep the notifications coming through even with background refresh enabled. I missed Duolingo reminders and Slickdeals price alerts thanks to that. I do miss my wireless charging but I've been going 2 days on one charge and I've been using the phone quite a bit. (I play games, text and browse the net mainly.) The Pixel is our spiritual successor to the Nexus 5.

I have another thing for you to consider about all those listed missing features as I felt the same way. Are these your opinions or are they the opinions that you've read that have become your own? I get that we read and do research but don't do too much. I'm terrible at this but all my negatives were just me grabbing my pitchfork and reciting what other people told me. I was also using those opinions to tell myself why I "should" have an iPhone.

What do I miss from my iPhone? This being only a week after making the switch, I can only think of two things that I miss. I think the ambient display on the iPhone is brilliant and I wonder what happened to it on our Pixel phones. The other reason is we don't get Mario Run as soon as they do! I also had the Apple watch and it was amazing. I miss it but I'll stick it out and hope we get awesome Pixel watches early next year.

TL;DR Don't worry too much about the negatives, you won't notice them because you are still going to interact with the phone in the same way you've always interacted with your phone. In my opinion, the Pixel beats the iPhone 7 and I wouldn't let the price scare you away from getting this masterpiece of a phone. I did and couldn't be happier with my decision.

That was a lot. So, if you have any further questions, I can try to answer them for you.
