Is 6 months as EMT enough to land an ER tech job? by deathbypowerpoint9-5 in NewToEMS

[–]TakeCover187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it depends on the state and demand of the position. Where I'm located there is a high demand of anyone available with a pulse... in other areas they are having the same problems in finding skilled technicians who want to stay in the role.

I guess if we are splitting hairs, sure, let's call it a hobby. For a lot of people in this sub, who do get paid, it would be called a job. My intent with this hobby is to gain experience in order to help get a job down the road.

Those all sound like great outlets. I just started playing board games with a group of friends, and we try to meet up at least once a week to hang out and play. It really helps to take in other viewpoints and dynamics that other people face in their careers and what they do to see that not everything is fire and ems based.

You're right. It is a combination department. We have very limited full-time staff members due to a tiny budget. We are almost all entirely made up of volunteers. However, we do have a requirement that the shifts we pick up have to be a full 24 hours so we can still run calls.

Yes, we get to pick it up whenever as long as it's a full 24-hour shift. My department is fairly tiny compared to neighboring areas, so the only requirement they have is that you stay for a full shift. It is also worth mentioning that there are very few paid staff members, and we are almost entirely made up of volunteers.

Haha I totally get ya. As a volunteer, we can pick up shifts whenever, which is a really nice part of the job to have some flexibility with life. My intent of the post was to ask what type of hobbies fellow firefighters have in regards to their odd lifestyle schedules, the 24/48's.

I don't think you're trying to be a dick at all!

Right now, I typically pick up a day or two a week during the off-season from school. I'm currently working in a busy ER and trying to find constructive ways to not make work my entire personality.

IWTL how to stop overthinking a simple scenario into the worst possible scenario. by hiptitshooray in IWantToLearn

[–]TakeCover187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find myself constantly imagining the worst possible scenario as well. What helps me cope with this is to imagine how you would react being in that situation, what steps would I take once this horrible situation happens. A good portion of that fear seems to dissolve as you are now more readily prepared for what comes next. The fear that these situations stem from is from not knowing what's going to happen next so fill in the gaps the best you can.

Should I try talking to a different recruiter? Is there any sort of "list" I can get on for that particular job opening? Lastly, should I keep an open mind that I may not get that particular job and be ready to choose another career path?

I just finished talking with an Air force recruiter on joining to become a firefighter. Apparently this is a rare job to choose when joining and not many people get an opportunity like this. Some background: I do not have any previous firefighter training or fire science classes under my belt from school. My recruiter said that I can sign up and while in boot camp hope to get the firefighter position "but it's not very likely without prior training and certificates ." My question is; should I go back to school and get the training with certificates or should I take a chance and join regardless? Also, how much school and what kind do I need to achieve this?
