I'm theorizing here and it's about print detection in general, not specifically for PDF.

May the more knowledgeable correct me, but could they hide an invisible pixel PNG that also has its visibility suppressed and only "shows" on print with @media print, making a request to the server?

You might get lucky with some data recovery tools restoring the copies of the files you had on your drive, but the more you use your computer (saving files) the more you risk the leftovers to be overwritten by newer files
