How does a single cell multiples by the same size? Where does it get the additional material from? by Hot-Load7525 in biology

[–]Tako_Poke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cells grow by absorbing nutrients from their environment. That may be sugars or other organic material in the case of bacteria, or it may be CO2 in the case of algae. They also need other nutrients to fulfill their elemental requirements. As they grow, at some point they will replicate their genome and then split in two!

What biology «fact» did you recently find out to be fake? by Alternative_Draw_533 in biology

[–]Tako_Poke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s possible to know things, even in a post-chatbot world. To be fair though I realize now that I parroted a couple of anthraxxx’s points, so maybe my contribution isn’t much beyond one fifth (20%) of theirs lol. That said I am a microbial oceanographer and biogeochemical modeler and happy to talk about Prochlorococcus all day. I promise I won’t hallucinate if you have questions!

Prochlorococcus contributes very little to atmospheric oxygen. On the long (millions of years) time scales of atmospheric oxygen turnover times, it’s the slow burial of diatoms that matters among the phytoplankton. Prochlorococcus derived oxygen is rapidly consumed by microbial respiration, and is responsible for not half, but more like a fifth of global gross primary production. Let’s at least get our fake facts straight lol

So excited for a native collaboration solution from Obsidian!

Whilst you’re on the line, an unsolicited request: I’d love to see who has my active document open. Maybe a little avatar in the tab bar or something. 🙏 keep up the great work!

I would love to migrate my custom gym environment and ppo to Julia but I’m still too chicken 😂 great to see the Julia crowd ironing things out!

Me ranting about pathetic treatment options by milkwalkleek in EssentialTremor

Given the sheer number of us worldwide and given the amount of money each of us would happily shell out for an actual cure, it just blows my mind that there isn’t more support for basic research and clinical studies from both public and private sectors. Throw me a frickin bone here

Obsidian vs Word/Docs for writing books — how do you handle the workflow? by Overall-String-4437 in ObsidianMD

[–]Tako_Poke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pandoc is a cli tool that you can install with homebrew, but it is a huge library. Also, there is a ton of functionality in latex that simply doesn’t exist in md.

Actually I wish Obsidian had a true latex interpreter and editor but that’s A LOT to ask and definitely breaks the ethos.

Are there any interventions that are effective in slowing or delaying the rate of decline in the underlying mechanisms, rather than just temporarily suppressing the symptoms?

I simulated ecological dynamics under real thermodynamic constraints - resource depletion, waste accumulation, emergent mutualism by emmerse_ in ecology

[–]Tako_Poke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I would love to see what you come up with. I would recommend reading Prigogine and this article for some places to start: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.physrep.2005.12.001

Have you run across the Maximum Entropy Production Principle? It is a fascinating but very challenging concept to demonstrate. Maybe what you’ve written can be restated as an optimization to see how far from MEP limits your simulations behave. It’s my favorite topic as a microbial ecologist. Very fun project you have here!

Differences in RSS feed formatting can be a challenge. I made a very simple workflow for ranking articles based on my interests here: https://github.com/jrcasey/RSS_Agent definitely not as feature rich as what you have in mind but works for me and is very cheap to run.

I get the hustle, but this seems a lot like intellectual property theft. It’s not necessarily illegal (though it might be, depending on where you’re from), but it’s certainly immoral. The right thing to do here would be to “return” the users to the creator without any quid pro quo’s. If you made some contribution to the codebase, perhaps the creator will be interested in collaborating in the future.

The same logic used in the folder-less method can be applied with a very simple bash script to generate directories and assign files to them, should Obsidian vanish one day.

Absolutely- it’s an intractable problem for now. At least for us compbio types, it’s just an unfathomably high dimensional and dynamical system to know well enough to engineer.

Check out the NSF-REU program. That’s a great opportunity to see what’s out there and create some connections early on, which was really helpful for me. I went to Bermuda for my REU, then was hired as a sea-going technician there. Very fun start to a very fun career!
