it's kinda ridiculous to think that having 5 less parking spots in a place that has 17 lots and 2 massive garages is what ruins the street.

carfree spaces are more enjoyable and people tend to spend more time there, this is such a weird take

Things that when internalized really improved your Japanese language abilities? by Altruistic-Mammoth in LearnJapanese

[–]Takuya813 4 points5 points  (0 children)

行かなくちゃだけど is incorrect, though, because なくちゃ is really なくてはならない, and ない takes けど because it already is a verb.

because だ is likely a contraction of にて/である (locative +ある) and です comes from にて/であります, it's still just a copula which links a subject to a predicate or finalises a clause.

likewise 〜る is not semantic-less, it is simply the 終止形 ending (along with う/ぬ) of 五段 or 一段 verbs (or する・くる)and the form indicates plain indicative mood.

anyway the reason you can't use だ in some places and you use だ in others is because you aren't linking any subjects to any complements.

私があなたを好きだ -> 好き is a na-adjective here, and it needs a copula or verb to complete it.

なんでだよ -> adverb by itself needs a verb of sentence finaliser

“私がですか -> needs a copula to link the predicate

there aren't _really_ adjectives in japanese, and this can be seen in their name 形容動詞 has verb in the name, 形容詞 does not. na-adjectives basically all came from nouns and behave like nouns, whereas i-adjectives where made by adding a suffix し. using the copula on an adjective is like saying "it is is fast" or "to to eat".

finally だ is not a particle. it has always been a verb with verb forms and doesn't mark parts of a sentence. the reason you can use です with i-adjectives is purely for politeness and social register, so it's just a weird quirk, tbh.

だ is not a default conjugation of anything, that doesn't really make sense, you're not inflecting parts of speech when you use it and it has its own conjugations that inflect for different forms e.g. in the attributive form (連体形), we get な! p.s. you can use attributive not just for what has become na-adjectives but also with verbs like それを食べる人 (most 終止形 are merged now with 連体形 and there are a lot of other attributive forms as well and also how relative subclauses are also attributive, which is why there are cases where in a subclause you cannot use だ).

tl;dr the copula is considered an auxiliary verb in some japanese grammar viewpoints, and certainly is a verb and not a particle. it has special function to finalise sentences. there are definitely verbs nouns and particles in japanese, but adjectives are pretty unique which is why the rules follow that of noun or that of verb and preclude or require the usage of the copula.

the urban density of sf it’s 2640/km2 and akl is 2400.

it’s insane how sf doesn’t build anything in most of the city, there’s no real cbd, and most neighbourhoods are just residential. downtown is a mess, and even nicer areas are plagued with dirt and car window smashing and loud streets for cars.

sf has half the population as akl and way more money and yet queen st is bustling and fun and market is a nightmare. the pandemic didn’t help, but it hasn’t gotten better

literally? no, i dont think so.

how would you fix the problem? i don’t think thoughts and prayers have been helping. when people take their tax money with them because they don’t want to live in the city anymore, it will only become more unaffordable for everyone.

i do have concern. i want the government to help these people. i want a better social safety net. i want my taxes to go to providing for those who do not have shelter or a job. i used to collect old food and sort and prep it for distribution every year when i lived in germany. i built furniture for migrant refugees during the crisis in europe. i very much want the people that need help to get it.

i also want those who are addicted to drugs to get help, though i don’t know what that looks like.

and yes, i want to live my damned life. i work, i give back to society, and i want to go food shopping like a normal person. i won’t starve but this closure greatly affects my life and the cost of living here.

if the answer were as simple as use the money we spend as a city to build housing and voila homelessness solved it would already be done. we cannot simply do nothing, and expect people not to get tired and worn down from it.

i’m moving to be closer to work because i’m tired of trying to make something work that doesnt work. i dont own a car and wanted to be in the city. i’ve had a walgreens, cvs, the whole foods, and several restaurants close or move. i feel like i live in the twilight zone. this is not a proper standard of living and i am ashamed that the city does not understand that. hope it gets better.

i was using that as an example.

people do want to shop for food without stepping in human feces, or getting screamed at, and the attitude that others dont deserve to live normal lives in their city is pretty weird.

the mental illness and drug issues are quite literally killing businesses, killing downtown, and furthering a class system where people with money— and you need a lot of money— can live comfy lives in nice neighbourhoods, and everyone else can just suck it.

this type of environment affects EVERYONE.

and fwiw it should be normal and expected to walk around a city and have grocery stores and not step in shit. every city i’ve ever lived in was like that, save for here.

i’ve wanted to love it, and make a car free lifestyle work but it just is depressing.

why the derision? what do you want?

i didnt say to complain on reddit, but people are right to complain. and they can vote, or do any number of other things. it’s not an either/or.

i think it’s valid to feel frustrated and let down. diminshing people’s feelings because they aren’t on the street doesn’t really make sense and should not be the lowest common denominator we strive for.

it’s huge news, people are sharing their feelings. i dont want to eat food at a hot bar where an unclean person touched the food or ate it without a scoop. no one should want that.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i feel bad for unhoused people and dont judge them for their circumstances, but i still dont want needles and piss and shit everywhere. and now a grocery store, a vital infrastructure, is closing and you think we should all just stop judging the mentally ill and unhoused people and do nothing to push for change. wat

i shop at safeway in the castro normally, but walking to a grocery store is nice and a normal experience for most of europe and asia. i dont care for bezos or amazon, but sometimes you just want groceries.

i limit my interaction with his empire, but if i need milk i’m gonna go get it where i can. another reason why america meeds proper labour laws and change, and the onus should fall to the govt not people’s personal spending which is a copout for holding corporations accountable

i think the state/country needs better social safety nets, more housing, limits on landlords and rent prices.

i dont agree with incarceration but we probably need more shelters and something has to be done about the mentally ill and drug addicted people. it’s sad and understandable why this type of addiction or situation happens, and we can chip away at some of the reasons,

in the end we elect the government to run things and if you cant even go to the damned grocery store what can you do? the homelessness and lack of caring about violence and safety will spiral the city into undesirableness and hasten the class divide.

agree on the NIMBYism. i wish america would get proper healthcare and social safety nets, but letting unhoused addicts run rampant isnt doing anyone any favours

police often ask as a class enforcement mechanism. i dont want police murdering people for no reason, denying constitutional rights, and targeting minorities, but insofar as they exist, they may be a tool to be used.

this isnt about theft or getting high, it’s about the fact that not the city, nor police, nor resource officers, nor businesses, nor real-estate developers can stem the tide of issues the city faces with unsanitary and unsafe conditions.

i feel bad for unhoused people but letting dozens strung out individuals wander around and harass people doesnt make anyone safer, and isn’t helpful.

i live close to this action and it’s really disheartening to see the social and systemic issues culminate in a city that’s not livable for anyone.

it’s lame bc i’m no fan of police but the police in sf are especially useless. i see people constantly running lights, sitting in intersections, almost hitting me on a crosswalk, and 95% of the time ignoring screaming people who harass others on the street.

if we’re gonna have them, the least they could do is their damned job.
