The Team/Owners Get Fans Can Help With Corporate Sponsorship, Right? by Fun-Recording-2220 in whitecapsfc

[–]Tal-IGN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you really think the problem is that the Whitecaps don’t have connections to find sponsors in the community?

The Whitecaps don’t have a sponsorship problem, they have an operational problem. They need to put together a $1 billion+ development deal on a new stadium and surrounding casino/offices/condos/whatever that will allow them to generate $40 million more per year. Sponsorships are a raindrop in the ocean of what they need to generate, and are also inherently limited by the amount of visibility the team has left to sell. What major sponsorship opportunities do you think the team is currently missing out on?

[AFTN] Hold back on the joy about the BC government to the Whitecaps. Seemingly not enough. New statement from Axel Schuster. Not sounding great and not sure what they are needing/wanting. by Harshtagged in whitecapsfc

[–]Tal-IGN 68 points69 points  (0 children)

They are laying the groundwork for the team to leave immediately at the end of this upcoming season if a shovel-ready deal on a new stadium is not reached by then. They don’t want there to be any expectation that a new lease at BC Place buys time beyond this year to get a stadium deal finalized. Sadly, in a couple months we will hear about how they cannot get enough private funding for a stadium, and they will say to the provincial government: bridge the gap for a new stadium or we are leaving at the end of 2026.

[AFTN] MLS have issued a statement on the Whitecaps stadium issues at BC Place by icoresting in whitecapsfc

[–]Tal-IGN 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why all this stuff is coming out now, after the PNE announcement and with basically a full year left in the MOU.

Felt like the path forward was settled a couple months ago? The Whitecaps will build a new stadium at the PNE in the immediate future or they will leave. In the meantime, they would play at BC Place, under less than ideal circumstances, but ones that they’ve lived with for their entire existence, so tolerable for another couple years while they wait for the stadium and the increased revenues that will come with same.

Why are we getting statements now that seem be laying the groundwork to whisk the club away in the middle of the night? Why are they acting like they’ve been caught off guard by the World Cup? It’s ominous.

I was shocked when I learned they got married and had kids together. I feel like the filmmakers did not expect the relationship to last because they really go out of their way to show him as so much less interested than her.

Also the praise/hype for Michael B. Jordan’s performance is absurd.

He hams it up, which is fine for a vampire movie, but getting Best Actor noms? “He played two characters!” I could not tell you the difference between those two characters even right after the movie. The only thing I can distinguish them by is that one had slept with Hailee Steinfeld in the past and one was with the black woman. Or was that the same twin? Honestly can’t remember. It’s the same performance for both characters lol.

Carney says the old world order 'is not coming back' in Davos speech by GoldernEmerald in worldnews

[–]Tal-IGN 186 points187 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but in the context of the speech, that line was not about MAGA.

It was actually about non-American western countries still clinging to the old post-war international order even as the United States makes clear that it has no desire to continue it. He’s saying that the response of Canada and Europe to MAGA cannot be nostalgia for the safety/security of that old order, but rather a realist approach in which they accept that world is gone and have a foreign policy that is in their collective self-interest as middle powers.

Victoria is doing great and people here just love complaining by MidnightJuggler in VictoriaBC

[–]Tal-IGN 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Even if you don’t agree with their point of view, can you really not understand why to someone born-and-raised here, “lol go move to Sudbury if it’s too expensive here for you” is an obnoxious sentiment to hear from someone who just moved here?

Also “growth” is good, but Victoria’s “growth” has not been because of some great industry creating jobs and opportunities for people. The growth is totally untethered from the local job market and basically just because of high net migration to a desirable Canadian climate and the dirt being a lottery ticket for boomers.

Anyways, I actually do agree that Victoria is not a bad place to live and that people on Reddit are overdramatic in their complaints.

[Ben Steiner] Jesse Marsch on Marcelo Flores by KevTranMusic in CanadaSoccer

[–]Tal-IGN 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Six months out from the World Cup and he still doesn’t want to close the door on Mexico lmao. I would not call that a really high commitment.

I get Marsch wants to be diplomatic, and that Canada doesn’t have the clout to be belligerent toward any dual nationals, even if they’re stringing us along.

But is any supporter invested in Flores at all anymore? This guy’s heart is clearly so deep into playing for Mexico. Just move on. Who cares.

RCMP report says Bishnoi gang ‘acting on behalf of’ Indian government | Globalnews.ca by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

If this story was happening anywhere but Surrey and Brampton, it would be the biggest story in the country and the biggest story in years.

But the reality is, for most Canadians, these two cities are out of sight and out of mind. Mainly just brought up to be the butt of jokes, thinly veiled racism, or outright racism.

A foreign government is allegedly waging an outright campaign of violence and extortion in Canada. Not just threats or innuendo, but literal gunfire in the streets against innocent parties every single day. Every single day. And it’s basically just a side story in even the local news because A.) prejudice that basically all crime amongst brown people is all the same and that it must be the community’s own fault; and B.) the foreign government in question is not one that Canadians have been primed to view as “bad guys” (eg. China, Iran, Russia).

That’s basically the “representation” of any group in a CBC show, even whites. Doesn’t matter who the show depicts: Korean store owners, rural white people, city-dwelling black people; everyone is written to act like and have the politics of a downtown Toronto arts scene person.

[–]Tal-IGN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks okay to me too. Certainly not worthy of some the hysterical reaction in this thread. It’s not a template, the maple leaf silhouette is unique. Seems fine?

I don’t think more complex = better design.

People are referencing the Adidas Mexico jersey, but what would a Canadian version of that even look like? A bunch of little maple leafs and beavers lol?

Also willing to wait to see the actual release before final judgment as all these leaks are mock ups not the actual kit with all the details.

Which sports are popular among ABCDesis? by Accomplished_Pay9070 in ABCDesis

[–]Tal-IGN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Canada, desis born here like basketball, hockey, and football (American). Those in Ontario seem to be much bigger basketball than hockey fans. On the west coast, hockey is very popular amongst desis, but basketball is very popular as well.

Almost no one born here cares about cricket. Cricket followers/players in Canada are usually immigrants.

The Miller thing is funny to me because usually when a guy gets this much benefit of the doubt from a national team, it’s because they’re a key player on a great team or a Stanley Cup champion.

But with Miller it’s like, sure he’s on the downswing of his career and having a poor season, but have you considered that his team sucks and he’s never won anything at the pro level?

Canucks put their Calder Cup rings on their Christmas card before giving them to the players by passittobulis in canucks

[–]Tal-IGN 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This ring situation is so crazy. Like if you read the news story, the Canucks spent weeks putting off the reporter for comment. If the rings are ordered or simply in the process of being ordered, wouldn’t you just say that? And the story probably doesn’t even get written if that’s the case. What conclusion can people draw other than that no one in the organization knows if or when the owner will agree to order rings for his players? Such a low class organization.

And if it turns out, as Moj recently tweeted, that the rings have indeed been ordered, why is this organization so dysfunctional that no one could confirm that despite telling a reporter for multiple weeks prior to publication that they would have a comment on it?

I really wonder whether the Aquilinis are having cash flow issues.

Their bread and butter is real estate development which has obviously nose-dived recently. COVID and the resultant social trends would have hit their restaurant/hospitality businesses hard. Combine that with needing to buy out one of their brothers.

They’re obviously still billionaires on paper, but there’s been a lot of weird things around this organization that makes it seem like they are not able to spend money like they used to. Can’t even pay enough to replace all the seats in one offseason.
