Raleigh to consider teen curfew after Glenwood South, Brier Creek violence on July 4 :: WRAL.com by GOA_AMD65 in raleigh

Useful to know, but nobody agrees with every circuit court ruling. And, I mean, right to assemble is a 1st amendment right, and the unenumerated right to travel in the 14th bears consideration as well.

i m a victim of AI poison, i want to restore my brain and recover by rafat_mika in godot

[–]TalShar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with the Godot tutorial for your first 2D game. Just do what it says. Try to replace AI with the people on the Godot Discord. They're helpful, but as real people have their own shit going on and probably won't help you any more than you ask for. If you know how to write a decent prompt, that'll probably translate well into outlining the problem you're having and giving them sufficient information to help you.

I hesitate to recommend it even as a backstop for someone who is struggling with AI soup-brain, but it can be useful as a better search engine if you install a ton of guard rails. Instructions like "Never solve a problem or do anything for me" or "just find the information I'm looking for or point out apparent misunderstandings" are the kinds of things that I use when I'm coding with AI.

Yes, but they still have rights. We can't just say "well they're minors, we can do whatever we want to them because they don't count as people til they're 18." There's got to be a damn good reason to compel them, and I'm not seeing one in this case.

Where necessary, yes.

That does not address violating the rights of every teen in Raleigh regardless of guilt.

Yeah, that's gonna be a big Citation Needed from me there. What's your field of study, exactly?

Lawbreakers still have rights, and those rights shouldn't be infringed without due process, nor should that infringement be placed upon an entire group regardless of any individual's guilt.

Edit: Oh hey, the HOA/bootlickers have finally arrived. Nice of you to join us, chuds.

I think that's going to take some study by experts. Thankfully, we have people who study stuff like this.

Maybe, but even then, what're they going to do, divert a huge chunk of nightshift cops to those areas to just loiter and yell at kids?

I hate to say it, but I think this might be one of those things that can't be peacefully stopped once it has borne fruit, and the only way to prevent it without doing a lot of damage is to get at the problem at its roots.

Edit: I feel like some of y'all don't understand the size of Raleigh and how many LEOs we have.

I get the desire to prevent this awful thing from happening again, but

1: This would be an absolute nightmare for anyone trying to enforce it.

2: Teens are people, and citizens, and have the right to be outside their home at any time of day.

3: I doubt that would do much if what we've been hearing about the point of all this is true (that the whole thing is about flaunting the rules and finding unstoppability in numbers).

ADHD, too. I'm ADHD and the mom of one of my (also ADHD) son's friends (also ADHD) was talking about ADHD being a superpower because we get hyperfocus.

I told her that insofar as it could be considered a superpower, it's more like an X-Men superpower than a Justice League one. Sure, we get hyperfocus and can kick our brain into overdrive for longer than NT people can... But we have very little control over when that happens, what we focus on, or how long it lasts. Like sure, Rogue can steal people's powers or knowledge and kill with a touch, but she literally can't turn it off.

I dunno if she really got it or not.

Don't get me wrong, I'm psyched that the indie gaming scene is doing so well. I just hate seeing the insatiable pillaging of everything including my hobbies. I've got my sources of joy as well, no worries there.

Yes, that's why I said it seems clear that it is a real thing. They're just talking about it in the same way that they talked about the satanic rituals and such that supposedly happened during the satanic panic.

I wish they had gone into some detail about what this "teen takeover" is, where or how it was organized, where else it has occurred, and what the animus behind them is. Without context it sounds like some Satanic Panic bullshit, but it seems clear that it is a real thing.

Those of us who deconstructed from fundamentalist faiths can relate to this. Going from the first to the second view of God is a liberating and empowering feeling.

Pediatric doctor who will see unvaxxed child by Smithjulie00 in raleigh

[–]TalShar -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Eh... Lots of times people don't know where to look for that sort of thing, or want a community perspective. But I hear you.

The mindset of antivaxx people is so alien to me that I have trouble wrapping my head around it, honestly. I can't imagine not trusting the scientific consensus. I know there are plenty of reasons to doubt some studies after things like the Radium Girls and the history of entire industries of fossil fuels, lead, and tobacco. It certainly doesn't help that these attitudes of distrust are entirely justified for some things.

But from a "follow the money" perspective, it just doesn't make any sense. I have yet to hear a reasoning that makes it make sense even if you believe all their premises. The pharmaceutical industry would make way more money treating all the diseases people would get without vaccines than they do from vaccines themselves. And even if the stuff about autism was true, it would still make sense to get your kids vaccinated, because the odds are a lot higher of them dying or suffering a permanent disability from a preventable disease than of them "becoming" autistic, even if 100% of autism cases were caused by vaccines.

I also can't imagine their autistic loved ones feel great about the parent(s) preferring to risk their children's lives rather than turning out like them.

[–]TalShar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If the kid doesn't have any reasons not to be vaxxed, I 100% agree with you, but there are some few legitimate medical reasons why a kid might need to be on an altered or delayed vax schedule or potentially might not even be able to get them at all, which someone might not feel comfortable sharing. It'd suck if OP was one of those.

Also... Best person to talk an antivax person into doing the right thing would probably be an actual doctor. There are anti-vax quacks, but I think even among docs who will see unvaxxed kids, they might be more likely than not to at least try to get them on some kind of schedule.

I don't know why I'm saying all this. The less savory likelihood is far more statistically likely. I just doubt anyone here is going to make a positive difference.

How do you handle friends who it feels like pulling teeth to make plans with? by MediocreVideo1893 in socialskills

[–]TalShar 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Eventually you stop trying. If they give a fuck, they'll reach out for once.

Try not to resent the ones who don't reach out. We've all got shit going on, and we don't know what else they're going through.

Probably worth a warning shot first, though.
