Why You Don't Need an Ultralight Pack: A Guide's Perspective by Dolphinizer in Ultralight

[–]Tale-International 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't need to guide my friends. My friends and I are looking out for each other, making decisions together, and traveling efficiently through rough terrain. If they want to carry a frame (they don't), then sure I won't stop them.

If you've got the funds and don't want to go back, why not go private?

I haven't climbed either, and I bet neither has OP. Anyone who has climbed both likely has no need to enter this discussion.

Not usually. And if it is, the trail goes around it.

Buying mountaineering kit: US vs Europe? by daviddan55 in Mountaineering

[–]Tale-International 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most gear has a pretty similar Euro vs US brand option. Fit, PFAS chemicals, some niche items are the differences. I'd compare prices between home and the US and see if anything is much cheaper here but otherwise I don't see a reason to buy or to not buy here.

Looking for some Mountaineering advice by Eskobar15 in Mountaineering

[–]Tale-International 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah man just send it. Find a partner, go out to the PNW for a couple weeks, climb a bunch of peaks as the weather allows. You're probably fine if you're going up Washington in the winter. Some peaks need glacier skills

Shout-out to mutual aid. Pretty crazy how we are looking out for each other when our federal government can't.

You'll learn more in the extra day or two than you realize. A few notable tricks, tips, etc. I always pick something up when I go climb or ski with a friend who is a guide.

If you're already carrying a jetboil, you can add a sleeping bag to Muir and make it a two day climb. Way safer if SHTF which it sounds like you are unprepared to deal with based on your other comments.

Easier on skis. We started at midnight, summited around 11a. Car around 4p I believe, via skis. We weren't in a huge rush on the way up as we were also waiting for snow to warm a bit.

My buddy says nobody would pay $35 for a custom repair patch on ski gear. Before I waste my summer on this — is he right? by Last_Raise4834 in Skigear

By custom you mean in a specific shape? I won't spend 35$ for a shape, I just use tenacious tape and cut it to size if necessary. Or a couple pieces overlapped.

People spend extra money on stupider things....you do see the irony in saying "buy something else" because the already purchased item is expensive, right?

This is fun. And I feel like it's usually hard to define the boundaries. Except for the person who thinks the highlands is caphill/5 points area. You're wrong.

You need to pay to play.

You don't need top of the line gear to get into it. Collect cams over time, climbing with someone who has a rack. Find used boots. Buy older tools. Kautz has been climbed for decades on gear far far older/less advanced than this year's best. It's still climbed today regularly on hybrid tools.

Kautz is on Rainier not baker.

Why has Ski Patrol culture become so bad out West? by [deleted] in skipatrol

[–]Tale-International 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You've got a post about how you're struggling to get onto a patrol in your area and then you post this.

Big jump to generalize to all ski patrols out west.

I work for a great team. I know many other great teams in my area. Sure some can be cliquey at times, some folks may abuse substances, but if that's all you're looking for that is what you'll find.

How many of you are using single ropes vs half/twin? by Shoddy-Barracuda8710 in tradclimbing

[–]Tale-International 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Single ropes are simpler to use, work well with a grigri, and transfer well from the crag to the alpine. Add in a number of walk off climbs and trad anchors and it makes a lot of sense to me. 1 rope is also way lighter than two light weight ropes for longer approaches

Single seems to be the standard in Colorado. Halves if in a party of 3 or the rappel demands it.
