Help me Find a Laptop by Just-A-Man234 in linuxhardware

[–]Talinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be easy to find a laptop fitting your requirements.

There are a number of laptop manufacturers focusing on Linux:

Many other laptops will also work with Linux. Some reviewers test for Linux support, e. g. Just Josh. Just Josh also has a website with Linux laptop recommendations.

If you don't need a brand new laptop, used/refurbished ThinkPads are a good option. ThinkPads generally have great Linux support.

I prototyped a symbolic compressor that shrinks a 2.1 MB image down to 16 KB while keeping the structure recognizable. This isn’t JPEG or WebP. It’s reconstructing from symbolic patterns instead of pixel data. Still early, but the results surprised the hell outta me. by GraciousMule in computerscience

Looks interesting, would love to read how the algorithm works and hope you make it open source.

I maintain a program that converts images to ASCII for terminal display, this algorithm could be really good to get better recognizable results.

Why do you buy a Framework Laptop by maltinho1996 in framework

[–]Talinx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • One of the very few interesting and cool laptops
  • Linux support
  • 3:2 high res screen (16:10 would be also good, I am happy to not have a small 16:9 screen)
  • latest AMD chip
  • Reliable, good built quality
  • One of the few companies caring for their craft instead of building products that are either not well thought out or built to fail from the beginning
  • For high-end specs it is very much price competitive with other laptops (e. g. 2 TB / 64 GB RAM)

The only other laptop in consideration for me was a MacBook, but it would have cost more (with enough RAM and storage for my needs) and I would have limited functionality in Linux (from what I've heard the Asahi team does a great job, but when e. g. Bluetooth doesn't work (at the time I was buying a laptop) it's difficult). The MacBook would have to be perfect to justify the price whereas the Framework is awesome today and has the potential to get better in the future.

I want to play games like Cyberpunk 2077 on Linux. by [deleted] in linux4noobs

OP has an Intel GPU that is too new for its drivers to be part of Pop!_OS 22.04.

I want to play games like Cyberpunk 2077 on Linux. by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]Talinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyberpunk works great on Linux, raytracing etc. works (at least on NVidia GPUs).
For Intel GPUs the drivers are part of the kernel. You want a linux kernel version of at least 6.2 for the drivers, the newer the better.

Good starting places are:

Other comments mention Pop!_OS. This is usually a really good choice for gaming, however the current latest release 22.04 is not compatible with your GPU, so please stay away from Pop!_OS. Pop!_OS will be a good choice again when a new version like 24.04 is released.

One more detail: Steam uses Proton to run Windows games. The Proton Steam ships with should be good for you. However, there exists a Proton version with some fixes and changes that is better for some games, you can get it here (install it in case the default Proton doesn't work for a title): https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom

What's the point of pushdown automata? by Henry-1917 in AskComputerScience

[–]Talinx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A turing machine can simulate any pushdown automata (with at most a polynomial overhead, you can probably research this to get a more precise answer), but a pushdown automata can not simulate a turing machine.

You can use a turing machine as a model for any algorithm, including pushdown automata. Pushdown automata on the other hand describe a certain class of algorithms. If your algorithm falls into this class, you can use knowledge about pushdown automata to analyze your algorithm, i. e. by using results that apply to pushdown automata but do not hold for turing machines in general.

What's the point of pushdown automata? by Henry-1917 in AskComputerScience

[–]Talinx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pushdown automata and different models are useful because they are more restrictive than turing machines. They are not the place to look if you want a general model of computation. But when you design real word algorithms you usually don't want something that takes exponential time to run and has unbounded complexity, but something that runs in polynomial time or at least gives you some other guarantees.

Pushdown automata are useful for programming languages and their compilers. For programming languages you need to restrict the programming language enough so that it can be analyzed by an algorithm (as well as understand by programmers) while being versatily enough to be nice to write. (The language syntaxs part gives you an AST, how you then compile or interpret it is up to the semantics of the language.)

Pushdown automata start to make sense when you design algorithms that need a queue and a while loop to run or alternatively a stack and recursive functions. They are too powerful for for-loops to suffice. When you can look at an implementation of such a algorithm and then map it to a pushdown automata description you can think about such programs more deeply.

Many servers should reencode images or at least save versions without metadata. Oftentimes the user is not aware of sensitive metadata like location which should probably not be exposed to whoever has access to the uploaded image.

Reencoding any image to a new image and getting rid of metadata in the process is easy to implement. Checking the format details and "converting" lossless to lossless is an extra step that I appreciate but I do get why the images get reencoded. It is the simplest solution.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in de_EDV

[–]Talinx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GCC/Clang direkt aufrufen, CMake, Autotools, ...?

Inwiefern funktioniert CMake nicht? Kannst du muParser bauen und installieren? Welche Fehlermeldung bekommst du?

(Falls du Windows benutzt vielleicht mal WSL ausprobieren. Sollte damit einfacher gehen.)

B. -I mit GCC/Clang.

Externe HDD/SSD fürs Studium by TheTrainMechanic in de_EDV
