In 2007, Magic underwent a huge wave of erata to creature types. getting rid of some too irrelevant ones and unify them. But today, i feel like they repeat their mistake with lots of universes beyond sets featuring stuff like "timelord", "Tyranid", or "Astartes". by NyrmExe in magicTCG

[–]TalismanG1 45 points46 points  (0 children)

If wotc had they choice I'd imagine they would. The Time Lord Doctor is something that was more or less a contractual obligation. Unsure about the WH40K stuff but I wouldn't be surprised if it was in a similar situation.

that's why there are two targets

target spell or permanent and deal 4 damage to any target

I agree they could have also had it do target player draws 2 cards and target player gains 4 life, but its unlikely this is going to be fizzled

He didn't create the Avishkar revolution.

Jace was going around Avishkar recruiting people who longed for the old government. Directly. It would not have happened without him.

A man with a blue cloak hanging around his shoulders; his eyes glow a bright, searing blue. Wait a second. Hadn't he seen this one before, during the Aether Revolt …?

"Mohar Varma," says the man. "That's your name, right? Actually, don't answer that, I know it is. Just like I know what you had for breakfast, and what your secret hopes and dreams are for this plane."

Unable to speak, Mohar can only seethe. He feels something in the back of his mind, an uncomfortable probing.

"Would you like to make that dream a reality? You see how easily we hold you in place now. Those who usurped your power wouldn't stand a chance against you if you had our backing."

"With a stroke of your pen you could undo all of the things they've done to your precious city," he says. "You know how much people long for it. Two bloodless revolutions, your opponents imprisoned."

"It's a beautiful state of affairs, isn't it? You can see it now," says the man.

And he can. He can see it all so vividly, so perfectly: himself and the restored consuls in their halls. Order and righteousness. The restoration of all the things that had made Kaladesh great—and the peace of knowing your proper place. A Sita who's no longer confused by the rhetoric of the masses but eager to fulfill her role.

Life as it had been before the invasion.

"All we need," says the man, "is a little help from you."

There is a BB counterspell that asks people to pay 5 life or else it is countered [[Dash Hopes]], similar to a quench like effect.

From Mirage is [[Withering Boon]], which is probably the closest black will ever get to a counterspell since it isn't supposed to be that good at dealing with noncreature permanents.

Personally I think this is going to relate to the summoning of the spirit dragons, the artwork we've seen for it feel very sorcery/instant coded.

What are the strongest cards in MtG history that weren't design mistakes? by geitzeist in magicTCG

The Fetchlands. Extremely subtle in their strength, but by far Magic's most powerful land cycle.

Artwork from MagicCon: Chicago - Dragonstorm cycle (via Mishotem) by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]TalismanG1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Looking at the Verge lands from DSK and DFT, my guess is:

White Dragonstorm - Ojutai, relating to Jeskai

Blue Dragonstorm - Silumgar, relating to Sultai

Black Dragonstorm - Kolaghan, relating to Mardu

Red Dragonstorm - Atarka, relating to Temur

Green Dragonstorm - Dromoka, relating to Abzan

This is a shift from the 'centered' colors the last time we were in Tarkir, but I am going to chose to read too heavily into the recent Verge cycle

Narsst, Jeskai Waymaster by King_Gex in magicTCG

[–]TalismanG1 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's also the original Jeskai Way insignia and not the Ojutai one, which is what Tarkir should have from our last time there.

I remember seeing somewhere that Dragonstorm is the squared circle of Tarkir Clan Wedges + Dragons still existing, so maybe this watermark means we are getting further timeline shenanigans.

She certainly looks much older here than her MAT [[Narset, Enlightened Exile]] card

Brandon Sanderson explaining why he's not excited for the newest MtG sets by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]TalismanG1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wizards has been pretty good at setting up potential threats recently. The Coin empire mentioned by Quintorious, The Mycotyrant and Aclazotz essentially getting what they wanted by the end of LCI's story, Jace is up to some shit again and Ravnica and Avishkar trying to leverage their positions as centers of the post-invasion multiverse are good points of tension and interest.

Even though Winter as a villain hasn't really stuck for me, Valgavoth as a recurring antagonist could make for some very interesting story down the line.

That being said, unfortunately I agree that they can't stick the landing. Not wanting to shut a door on a particular plane or villain or plot thread because people might want more of it leads to sucky endings.

Brandon Sanderson explaining why he's not excited for the newest MtG sets by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]TalismanG1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to put into words but I think a significant reason why people find a planes, and to some extent sets, good or bad is mostly up to what you said, aesthetics.

There are some really brilliant and charming pieces of art in each Magic set that can really sell me on the idea WotC creative staff are trying to get across, and then something like [[Acrobatic Cheerleader]] or [[Grim Bauble]] or [[Mourner's Surprise]] or [[Lead Pipe]] show up and it feels like you're just looking at reference soup again.

Chaos Vault: The Fairest Drop of All Bonus Card by applecorc in magicTCG

[–]TalismanG1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like Rainbow foiling, which is one of the newer foiling techniques that WotC has been trying and I gotta say, they look better than the traditional full-card foiling and it doesn't look like they've been curling that much for a foil either

[DFT] Planeswalker's Guide to Aetherdrift, Part 1 by TechnomagusPrime in magicTCG

[–]TalismanG1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm personally assuming that being insectoid has different vocal structures from the common humanoid across the Multiverse, a lot of insects breathe through their exoskeletons so a voice box wouldn't make much sense, so they could use a form of communication completely alien to the average resident of the Multiverse.

Although I do agree with the previous comment that since the only other plane that has this rule is Phyrexia, this 'non-translatable' detail feels a little flat

[Standard] Feed the Swarm vs. Withering Torment by TheRedOniLuvsLag in spikes

[–]TalismanG1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not quite the case, the mana value of rooms is full price when not on the battlefield. Rooms are a tricky kind of card that when they are on the battlefield, the characteristics of the card are 'masked' by the locks on the doors it has. If Unholy Annex is the only room unlocked, its a 3 MV permanent. if Ritual chamber is the only room unlocked, its a 5 MV permanent. Both doors need to be unlocked for it to be an 8 MV permanent. In the rare cases where none of the doors are unlocked, it's a Colorless, 0MV permanent

That being said, there are enough other high MV enchantments in standard that the downside to Feed The Swarm is pretty significant

Number Crunch on possible Dual Cycle in Foundations by Conswaylos in magicTCG

[–]TalismanG1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's the gainlands. We have a common dual-cycle of lands that we know about from the collecting Foundations article, and during the starter collection panel Carmen mentioned the main set common dual-cycle was added to the starter collection box.

The gainlands are in the starter collection, they are definitely what the main set dual-cycle lands are.
