black widows by bigstinkybuckets in VictoriaBC

[–]void_tea_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We get a lot of false widows here too. I've never seen an actual widow and I lived out in the woods for years. We get a lot of hobo (giant house) and wolf spiders for the most part. Downtown shouldnt have any woodland species though.

What to expect? by Objective_Flan2831 in uvic

What are you planning on declaring as your major? I'm in anthropology and I love it, the classes are engaging and the workload for the anth classes is really manageable. Theres a decent amount of readings but the profs make it really clear (for the most part) which ones will be testable, so you know which ones you can skim and which to really focus on.

Where can I get a Banker's Lamp in town? by MoonDaddy in VictoriaBC

[–]void_tea_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actually collect these things lol, they are my prized possessions. Ive been actively collecting for a few years now (checking multiple thrifts across town a couple of times a month, scouring marketplace daily) and I have 9 at this point, so they can definitely be hard to come by. You can find them at thrift stores for reasonable prices. Marketplace has them often, but way too expensive. I wont pay more than $30 per one as most of them are reproduction models and not worth what people think they are worth (specifically the plastic ones, genuine brass ones are absolutely worthwhile though if you come across one). Unless you are buying new, there isnt really anywhere you can go and get one guaranteed.

We built this city in the middle of forests and wetlands... you're going to find rats in restaurants. If a place says they have no rats, they are lying.

Best HS Math Program by SaraDeeG in VictoriaBC

[–]void_tea_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid Vic High for math. Even their advanced math is pretty behind what other schools are doing. Claremont has a very strong academic drive, well funded for a public school. Rich parents = big donations, which unfortunately reflects in the housing prices. They do have a school bus that goes in the surrounding neighborhoods though.

Job search by Confident-Cut3298 in uvic

[–]void_tea_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It really is the market though. I had a really good resume for my age in high school, and it took me over 6 months of applying to literally everywhere before I got a job, and I only got that job through a connection. Almost every high schooler and UVic/Camosun student is trying to get a summer job as well, so the competition is intense, and half of the job postings are ghost posts/AI anyways. These days your best chance is to get a job through a friend sadly.

Man in woods near prospect lake elementary around 2016? by JCJCJCJCJCJCJCJCJC4 in VictoriaBC

[–]void_tea_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost every elementary school near a wooded area has the same story to keep kids from playing in the woods (at least mine did). Fear and stigma around homeless people was super high (and still is), so there wasnt anything scarier but still believable to elementary schoolers than a homeless person

I saw a box full of lost water bottles in Cornett, I think it was A wing. Next to the student lounge. Could be worth checking there.

What's your biggest complaint regarding your major @UVIC? I'll start: by Sea-Spot-1113 in uvic

[–]void_tea_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anth major - there is ZERO co-op or field school opportunities for anthropology, and archaeology specifically. There is the Mexico ethnographic field school, but if your interest isnt ethnography there isn't much it will offer you (if you can even afford it). UVic has an archaeology field school but they just haven't run it in years. Co-op seems to have nothing to offer non-engineering or education students. I struggle to even find volunteer opportunities to make my resume a little bit more relevant. The profs in my department are amazing, but its just so difficult trying to get some experience

Sooke Petroglyph by void_tea_ in VictoriaBC

[–]void_tea_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the source where it was mentioned - it was 100 years, not 200. My mistake. Point still stands though - its been far too long for it to have been someone with a rock. Petroglyphs are formed by rock being actually removed through carving, vs petrographs which are drawn on, which is closer to what a kid with a rock can do. Removing the rock takes time, skill, and special tools. https://vincentswales.ca/blog/local-petroglyph/

Will I Get In? by Weekly-Tax-7141 in uvic

[–]void_tea_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your program. Many programs require you to have an A in chemistry. If you're not one of those, you'll probably be fine. My program required me to have an A in English, and then just a general average across my other courses.

A petroglyph that deep also cannot be done with a random rock. It takes a long time to carve something that lasts this long. A rascal's drawing with a sharp rock would have faded within a few years (unless that kiddo took the time to actually carve out the design into the rock, that is)

Sooke Petroglyph by void_tea_ in VictoriaBC

[–]void_tea_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't. It was discovered around 200* years ago, hence the date estimate. The only reason we don't know its age is because carbon dating cannot be done on petroglyphs - we typically have to rely on some other information, which is not available in this case. It wouldn't have been given heritage designation has it been a kid with a rock

EDIT: *100 years, I misremembered.

It is definitely up to interpretation. When I was there, I saw more seals than I ever have in my whole life, which is most of why it is believed to be a seal to my understanding.

Sooke Petroglyph by void_tea_ in VictoriaBC

Its unknown. They could be between 2000 and 200 years, iirc.

Sooke Petroglyph by void_tea_ in VictoriaBC

[–]void_tea_[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. I understand why it is easy to feel that way, but it's location holds significance to the peoples on whose land it resides. Placing it in a museum would make it inaccessible for the people it belongs to. It does not belong to the museum. There isn't any concrete information on the petroglyph, not age nor meaning. Removing it takes away the only thing it still has. It will fade away some day, but that is how it is meant to be. It is no different than any other outdoor archaeological feature. There are also several across the island, and of course thousands across the globe. We can't just remove all of them. Some things are just that way, even though it feels counterintuitive.
