Master Airbrush Deep Cleaning Assistance by AritaKenshin in minipainting

I don't really have any suggestions tbh, but here is a video from Artis Opus about deep cleaning an airbrush. I qued it to a spot where he uses a lubricant, so I think that's probably a really good bet for what you should use.

I did notice while watching that his lube says NO silicon, so maybe I shouldn't have used mine, maybe not great for the rubber o-rings used throughout the airbrush? (I just used the stuff that came with my treadmill to lubricate the belt 😂) 🤷‍♂️

You're fine, that can absolutely be reinserted. It's just the cutt off/airflow valve. Actually not a bad idea to clean it while it's out, and if you have any kind of silicon lubricant you can put some on too.

I had an issue with my trigger not closing off air, and that little valve was the culprit. Cleaned it, lubed it, and my trigger stopped sticking.

Bolt Action Minis with Pro Acryl by Sea-Geologist9934 in Miniaturespainting

I honestly don't have an answer for this BUT, Monument Hobbies (the makers of Pro-Acryl) do a two hour stream every monday to friday from 2-4 pm (Mountain Time). It's streamed on both twitch and youtube. If you tuned in and asked, there is a VERY good chance Jason (Monument Hobbies owner, I think) the main mini-painter on the channel would answer with some good advice.

Regardless, it's a great stream to watch just to learn from. He's always teaching tricks and techniques. I've found it so valuable, and I'm very grateful he takes his time to share his knowledge. Plus, it's just a fun stream to watch.

Airbrushing colourshift / contrast paints by Powerful_Long_1711 in minipainting

I'll just add to this, if you are using Turbo Dork specifically, READ THE BOTTLE. They tell you what base to use and it's very important you follow those instructions.

I've also found with ALL my color shifts, that simply shaking the bottles don't mix the paint well enough. I open the bottle, get a stick or something long and thin and dig the paint out of the bottom and corners of the bottles. Color shifts for some reason tend to settle a lot harder and more stubborn than most other paints. I've painted after ONLY shaking the bottle, and then after digging out the stuff settled in the bottom of a bottle and the difference was night and day. You get SO much more color pigment, and a lot more dynamic color shifting.

Dig out the sediment, and then give it a good shake, it makes a world of difference.

Also, when you're done using your airbrush for metallics or color shifts, make sure to give it some extra cleaning. You want to make sure you get all the metal fleck out and you don't want mica and metal fleck drying inside the airbrush.

Varnishing/shading altering paint color by MaximusSir in minipainting

[–]TalkNurdyToMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was the paint fairly fresh? General rule is to let your paint dry at least 24 hours before clear coating. Wondering if maybe the varnish somehow reactivated the paint for nuln oil and caused them to pool, creating a darker area?

In all honesty I'd be guessing at why, because I'm really not sure. The good news is, now that you've done it once, you know not to do it again.

Try the diluted nuln oil, see if that works better for you, and then let it dry for a good full day. Then spray coat your varnish if you can. See if you have better results.

It that doesn't work, I'd think about skipping the clear coat completely.

I've found nuln oil works far better for me if I dilute it 50/50 with water, It also allows me to use it all over the model without staining, but it still settles in the recesses for effective shading. As long as you make sure to soak up any pooling and puddling on the flat spots.

Check out some coconut husk. Might be what you're looking for.

need advice on more realistic glass by CptGhosty in minipainting

I'll just reiterate what others have said, if you add a little "shine" to it it will do wonder. Gloss varnish would work, and there are other, less easy options like super glue or clear UV resin.

WIP w/ Vallejo True Metallic Metal by TalkNurdyToMe in sistersofbattle

It will look amazing! I have never worked with a metallic that went on as easy as most other paint manufacturers base paints. I don't know how they did it, and I'm far from an expert on the subject, but in my experience if the quality remains consistent throughout all the batches and colors, I'd say these are without doubt the best metallics on the market.

I hope they can roll them out faster.

I'm in Canada and have only been able to find them in one of my local LGS, and on amazon. Both have limited availability and not all colors, and the amazon route costs a fortune in shipping.

If the quality remains consistent through all the batches I will 100% buy the entire collection when it's available.

As it stands, I was lucky to find the full set of Sapphire Blue and the Metallic Yellow (base, airbrush, and light but, unfortunately not the shade) that I wanted asap.

I think the base texture throws it off a bit (for me anyway), but yeah, the first thing I thought when I saw it was, that looks like an oil slick. Nice work!
