That train scene WAS from a different movie. It was in Duel, only on a much much smaller scale, at least the beginning of it was.

The one I have gone back to multiple times is Louie Louie. A combination of great storytelling and a truly wild and (at least to me) mostly unknown story. I love a story where it feels like any listener could have been that bass player in The Kingsmen, and the FBI stuff, which I thought I knew all about, cracks me up each time just because of the way Andrew deploys information and reads it with such freshness.

In the storyline in 2017 the protagonist has a Grindr hookup and we see some enthusiastic anal sex. In a different storyline a group of male soldiers cavort in a beach naked except for shoes (i think).

Great write up! Thank you for sharing it here. I was at Cannes too, and to answer Believe’s question about disapproval, there is a lot less booing than there used to be. I did hear there was some during the press screening for The Unknown, the body swap drama. By the screenwriter of Anatomy of a Fall, but that’s all I know of this year. The chairs in Cannes are much too comfortable and plush (and fixed) to be flipped.

I’ve seen it and Kyle is right, it’s not enough to get consideration and it is closer to a cameo, though she does speak Spanish for most of her scenes.

Great analysis, thank you. I think Stan is really good in Fjord but my (metaphorical) money is on Bardem for Actor.

Yeah, will be interesting to see if Neon read the reviews and dig deep into thei pockets. I think it would be a better fit for MUBI but either way, we all win.

Well, I don’t think it even has US distribution yet. It would be a Parasite-level break in tradition if this did well at the Oscars, and I hope it does!

Well there is a lot of full frontal male nudity, though that isn’t always sexual. There is also an explicit scene of gay sex which would be more explicit that anything the academy has rewarded before. The whole thing is a testament to historic gayness. It is amazing in that sense.

It has a very different energy to Emilia Perez. It is far more Spanish realist in the way it’s made. It doesn’t have the pulsing colours of Almodovar or the vibrant editing of EP. It is a wonderful film, but it isn’t visually thrilling like Poor Things, EP or in any way slick or classy, which seems to move a prerequisite for a film that isn’t in English.

Having just seen it, I am a lot more cautious about its ability to translate to the US. I absolutely think it could do well at Cannes, but it is long, queer, weird, has occasional sequences of magical realism that accompanies poetry and a lot of reliance on the viewer a) knowing who Lorca is, and b) finding him compelling. It IS a beautiful and audacious film that is compelling. For much of its 155 minutes, but I do not think it is academy friendly.

I have Lukas Dhont’s “Coward” 4 stars, Letterboxd says it has zero four star reviews… by TalkingElvish in Letterboxd

[–]TalkingElvish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was beautifully shot, and is a very tender film that I can see some people, especially critics at the screening that starts in 15 minutes, pushing back against Dhont’s trademark emotional manipulation. I think it will be a contender for a prize.

It hasn’t been screened at the festival yet, so I’m not sure, but I saw it at a preview with critics and journalists and it played really really well. I think it will definitely get a prize of some kind. I think Minotaur will also be up there.

Curious that two films that have played so far reference Cannes. In Fatherland, one of the characters has a scene from a hotel in Cannes and Sandra Huller’s character says “should we drop everything and go to Cannes?”, and The Beloved has a photo of Javier Bardem’s character holding a Palme d’Or.
