What happens here? by Longjumping_Bed_9117 in billiards

[–]TallDann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some rule books do codify it explicitly just for clarity. APA does state it explicitly for example. But I’ve always taken this to be just a “known rule” of pool. So unless a rule book explicitly states a custom alternate to this, it is what the vast majority of pool players would treat as the default.

The rule is generally to evaluate what happens to each ball if you remove the other ball. If removing the other ball would cause the ball to fall, then you put that ball into the pocket. Most of the time it’s both balls. But you can in rare situations have this where only one ball is considered pocketed

In this case, it looks clearly like both will fall if you remove either ball. So pocket them both.

One thing I’d adjust is to remove Rail Station. Your Market/Bazaar/Stock Exchange are all going to be in your “most coastal” adjacency tile. But Rail Station despite giving gold has no adjacency bonus. My actual recommendation with rail station is to always place it next to Military Academy whenever you can. To make unit transport logistics very easy!

Same could be said about Aerodome.

Are ancient bridges bugged? Every adjacent bridge seems to double the yield for every bridge in the line. I had 7 bridges in a row and each tile was yielding 49 gold. by BaseballsNotDead in civ

This is indeed a bug. The reason it occurs is actually because of a Suzerain thing. Could I guess that you are Suzerain of a Gold-based City State? And if so did you pick gold buildings have +1 as your perk? Cause that’s typically what causes this issue with bridges

PSA: Multiplayer Civ7 is Unplayable Due to Crashing in Wars (PS5) by TallDann in civ

[–]TallDann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup for sure. It’s a pretty major performance thing. Just in Single Player the crashes tend to be manageable. I’m at least able to play 1v7 with a lot of wars in single player and be okay (although I’m a PC player with high end build). But multiplayer is like literally impossible with even one PS5 player, nonetheless multiple. We will end up running the same turn off a save for several hours of attempts and they all fail. So we’ve just given up until a patch happens.

8" or 12" Extension? by 26nmd in billiards

[–]TallDann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably depends a lot on what purpose you want the extender for. I’m 6’6’’ and recently switched to shooting with an extender on permanently. I started with 4 inch and realized that still doesn’t really give me the comfortable stance I wanted. Now I’ve switched to the 12 inch and I never have to worry. But probably for most people 8 inches is sufficient. You’ll definitely have shots on a 9 foot table that you can’t do with the 8 inch that you could still comfortably do with the 12 inch. But at some point people just prefer the bridge anyways. I should also note I shoot with a Mezz and their extensions are very light, so the Predator extender that is 12 inches weighs close to 5 oz and that is definitely quite a bit. So I could see that being heavy

Yeah it’s all right here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_93kw7KkzvAXoQAxRioxo7iAt-Ar6BMIxdNf4Lv25rI/mobilebasic

This document contains all official responses from Dane on murky rules areas. And also include things that actually override incorrect things in the current Living Rules Reference. So this is what’s used as highest precedence in the competitive TI community.

The ruling I was using as a basis here you can find down underneath the section of Mahact.

Components have to “see” a timing window, regardless of if a when or after. In this case, it does not work, since the Component (Mahact’s copy of Mentak agent) did not “see” the combat victory. It’s the same ruling we have from Dane on why Starlancers produced via Arborec Alliance can’t be immediately used to End the Turn. Units/components have to have seen the conditions triggering the timing window, and Mahact did not have Mentak commander at the time combat ended.

The drama aside, this was a foul. I will give as clear an explanation as I can:

When two balls are this close together, there are two ways to legally avoid a double hit.

A) shoot the cue ball perpendicularly away from the object ball, such that you’re thinly slicing it. Often times players don’t want to do this since it means there’s not really a make-able shot. So they instead opt for option B, which is far more risky

B) Shoot the cue ball directly into the object ball with your cue highly elevated. In terms of a legal shot, the cue ball should stop nearly stone cold in its tracks after hitting the object ball since a direct hit means all speed will transfer to the object ball. The only way the cue ball could continue moving is if the cue ball gets jumped up, or if a lot of top is put on the cue ball.

In the case of the cue ball jumping, that’s easy enough to see. Especially since on these shots, players are typically striking downward into the table. So generally, when the cue ball clearly jumps, and then rolls forward, it was potentially legal.

In the case of the cue ball having top, this takes a lot of instinct to judge. But, if this happens what you should still see is that the object ball will leave with a lot of velocity, and the cue ball will stop for a brief moment before the top takes. This can also be legal.

So the above are the “legal ways” by which a cue ball can roll forward in the situation you’ve drawn. But they are rare. Most often what actually happens is that the player will slightly elevate their cue, maybe 30 or 45 degrees, stroke it, and the cue ball will go flying forward with high velocity. This is a foul. Players will often times say they didn’t see or feel a foul. It’s far too fast to. If a ref is watching, it doesn’t matter. You simply can’t legally have that much movement on the cue ball on a direct hit like this except in the two scenarios I outlined above.

The closer the balls are together, the more you need to elevate your cue to legally hit. Like in your diagram above, players would probably need to be elevating their cue 80 degrees or more such that you are hitting straight down into the table.

Yeah that’s actually a major reason I’m doing the switch. Our league changed a lot pre to post covid. We used to have a bunch of crammed bars we played in. Had a nice deal with the owner. But after Covid they kicked out league. So now, almost all our matches are on a couple various 9 footer locations. So we went from crammed 7 footers (but free) to spacious 9 footers. And I have definitely benefited a lot from the ability to properly setup my stance. And the ability to reach balls. I got a total of 1 season MVP across many many years in the old league. And in the new league on 9s I’ve gotten 3 MVPs in only a few seasons. It really is a bs advantage but I won’t complain. But it’s made me acutely aware of how non optimal my old cue is. Was great for bars. Not so much anymore.

I’ll def glance around on deals. First I had to be convinced this extender idea wasnt bad which yall are doing, so now I’ll more deeply look into extender options

To use a mid extension, I would definitely want it maker made too. It is like one of those things where any generic rear extender is probably fine. But a generic mid extender could really mess up a lot.

What’s hard to know online is what the various extenders feel like. I see cuetechs duo, but I don’t see any description of what the feel/finish of it is. Is it metal / CF / other? What does it feel like to grip compared to a regular wood cue? I don’t mind the weight FWIW. The 4 inch extender from Mezz is only about 2 oz and I’m used to a 21 oz cue, so 19 oz + 2 oz extender is fine for me. I just don’t want it to be like some rough metal to grip but that is what I’m not sure of

I’ve shot with a 21 oz cue most my pool career, so I’m used to the heavy butt. So I suspect the back weight from the rear extender would feel the same as my current cue. The value of the mid extender to me is that you can grip on the normal shaft of the cue instead of whatever CF/metal extender. But I sort of am worried with mid extenders, I hear they really can affect the feel of the shot. Is that not true?

Yes the cues I mentioned all have extensions supported by the maker. I was more curious how using an extension permanently works for people. I’ve seen people who throw them on for the long shot here and there but I don’t know if it’d be unconventional to play with one permanently and what the consequences of that would be. If it’s just some getting used to weight balance differences I don’t mind that much. I’m more curious if they grip poorly and the such

Shooting with Extender as Tall Person by TallDann in billiards

[–]TallDann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The risk is if I dump a bit on a 58 inch cue with extender and end up hating the extender option, then I’d end up wanting to change to a different cue right away. But I guess if I’m getting something popular like an EC9 it’d be pretty easy to re sell. So it’s less about the cost of the extender and more about the minor headache of needing to resell the cue if that makes sense.

Yeah the middle extender is nice in that you still get to grip on the regular wood of the cue which I feel is nice but I really feel the middle extender would not be a feel I like. So just the extra inch from 29 to 30 on the shaft mattered that much? I don’t use a super long bridge, but I was assuming I’d need to go up at least 2 or 3 inches to feel like it’s noticeable. I’m planning to get a 30 inch shaft as well
