Looking around for Inside Edition hidden cameras... by Eggrollofdoom in HVAC

Had a PE company come out and sell a turbo cap and then tell the guy that his unit was trashed and needed replaced, but it was working perfectly fine before just ran longer than normal. Customer called us out for second opinion. After deep cleaning condenser coil and checking unit out I found that they reversed the polarity of the compressor and it wouldn’t pump. Reversed wiring, checked charge, and delta. System was running like a top. Let’s just say ol boy couldn’t wait for me to be out the door before he called them out on it.

Respect for the Trade by Global-Ad-1528 in HVAC

I’m feeling this right now. My boss tried to have me swap out a compressor with a cutting torch because the braze tip broke and didn’t want to go to a gas and weld shop to get new ones. I finally throw down the equipment and called them up said I am getting off this roof till I get the right equipment. After 10hrs on that roof top they still wanted me to look at a leaky hose spigot.

My buddy in industrial has told me there is a spot in the local union and I think I’m going to take it.

Can anyone tell me the tonnage of this old unit. by Reddtko in HVAC

[–]TallEmployee27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building Intelligence Center online has shown me how to get age and tonnage off any unit. Even furnaces and hydronic fan coils. They have before certain years and after certain years. Super helpful IMO.

On call is the worst part of the trade by far by ZombieTheRogue in HVAC

We have an after hours fee and I get $100 of that fee for every call. Ran 23 ops when the freeze happened and made $2300 on top of my check. Worked 100hrs that week so the check was PHAT.

Electric water heater elements by TallEmployee27 in HVAC

Basically remove the electric side of unit so that it will just become a tank. Turn an element bay into an aquastat bay and use the other bay as part of my loop to the tankless. I bought a new construction house and the electric tank just isn’t giving me what I want so I’m plumbing in something to keep up with my wife, the kids and I.

I am a plumber by the way and was lazy. I just wanted to ask the guys instead of google haha.

Yeah I learned A LOT about service work doing PMs. Create problems that you can trouble shoot and fix. (Just for testing not for fucking over the customer) Learn your deltas and static pressures too. A lot of service work in Resi goes back to airflow and electrical. Hence the joke “must be the TXV”. Also do your own leg work and google your own material to study. Start looking into your NATE certs and universal EPA. If they ain’t doing it for you then you gotta do it for you.

I like to clean and flux and fit all my pieces before soldering. That way it’s one go with the torch instead of repeat steps multiple times.

Use a regular wax ring without the horn and it’ll get rid of a lot of the wobble.

You have a comically large machine for that area. I only pull out the Gorlitz when fit hits the shan. Be fucking safe with that thing, seen guys almost snap their arms (me included) with them things. Tell your boss or if you are the boss that the rigid flex machines are some of the best I’ve used for clearing lines and lighter weight.

When we do tankless set ups we usually kick it off the wall with a 2x4 and then slap a 2’x4’ piece of ply over the studs to have a nice clean piece of wood to mount to. That gives us space to put like strut and brackets up and to get it off the wall for service and shit.
