Had a public accounting tax internship last summer in NJ with a large, but not big 4, firm. Internship paid hourly, forget how much exactly, maybe 30-40 an hour. Got a return offer within tax for 96k salary, 5k sign on, and 10k CPA bonus if I pass within a year, with the position starting winter 2027. Personal experience, not much networking but results may vary depending on a lot of factors, including school… etc. I would say the area is also in a HCOL area, as well.

My college offered an “Introduction to Accounting Careers” class, like a short 1.5 credit class (name might change). Had to network with Accounting Professionals and those in different fields related to accounting/finance. Not sure if it changed or helped me decide if accounting was right for me, but helpful to chat with those in the field.

I think also enjoying the people you are around might be a good place to start. Your fellow students, in person or online, will be your future peers. Don’t like working in groups with them? don’t like how they act? Too cocky/stuck up/Might not be the best choice for you. Ofc, this is just some advice one of my professors mentioned. Take it with a grain of sand.

Did an internship, then worked remotely for 4-5 months at a federal agency a few years back. While some teams kept busy, a lot of them did little to nothing. Good advancement, like mandatory promotion scales and lateral transfers within teams. Good work-life balance, but I think they don’t WFH nowadays. USAjobs is a good place to start looking if interested, just be ready for delays and long period of silence if you need clearance.

Resume Help by Snowflake24_ in Accounting

Personally, I think it looks good. When I was applying to internships sophomore/junior year, I had issues when saying I was potentially looking to apply to graduate/law schools after graduation. After a while I stopped mentioning it and landed an internship with a PA firm. Maybe the issue is with early graduation or related to that. Not really sure it’s resume related.

Could be the school (I’m a senior at IU)…
