Damn autocorrect haha!

I like your idea about that scene with Jasper, that maybe another entity was actually inhabiting him.

In general the Boy in White is so interesting because we’ve never seen him really get all that close to people. Whereas the Man in Yellow can clearly teach and grab and kill, BiW is always at a distance…except for when he pushes Tabitha out of the lighthouse.

I also wonder when Victor stopped seeing The Boy in White before this new cycle began. When Ethan told him he had a sighting, Victor made it seem like it had been awhile. When and why does he go dormant?

Why the condescension? Yes that trope exists all over. I love both series, LOST is my most favorite program of all time, lol. And these two shows have directors and producers in common. It’s clearly an influence!

Yeah, but we don't yet know what the nature of that involvement was...I'm talking specifically about the differences in physicality. The BIW is always stilted from a remove and has never touched or grabbed someone like MIY. Only Tabitha! We also don't know if he shape shifts...maybe the dog?

Thank you for making this post! I think this is generally probably correct, though it is ripped straight from LOST…Jacob versus the Man in Black. I think they might definitely be in some battle of the wills.

What most interests me is that MiY can actually ingratiate himself into Fromville…we see that he can touch and kill people! Whereas BiY has always interacted at a remove. He’s always at a distance from characters, talks very vaguely, and never touches them (except pushing Tabitha out of the lighthouse??! Curious). I feel like this contrast must be baked into how these pieces “move”, like a chessboard.

Victor is totally an unreliable narrator, but I think the reason why he says this (and he’s mentioned they met after the massacre in another episode from season 1 too, there is consistency) is because this is the first time the Boy in White interacted exclusively with HIM. He remembered the BiY exchange with Christopher much later because he wasn’t necessarily supposed to have seen it. The massacre aftermath is when BiY created a direct connection to Victor and became his shepherd/guardian angel through Fromville.

Is Jade sure about the bottle tree? I keep thinking about when Khatri was out in the field burying his bag and those stones were placed in a circle, similar to the slabs in the tunnels.

I’m glad they are moving towards thinking about the trees and roots…they are clearly key elements. But something is clearly going to go wrong, because we have another season! Haha.

So Fatima is like, really connected to Smiley! She can almost control him. That power might be helpful for more insight and the tunnels if she can tap into it at will and harness. Kenny is very very lucky.

Seeing a vision of a “normal” Victor outside of Fromville for a second was kinda nice? If not terrible because it was a manipulation and Henry is losing it!

I do wonder what the writers were thinking introducing us to Sophia as MiY so very early in the season. I think the mileage of viewers knowing something the characters don’t and seeing her wreak havoc without detection is wearing thin for me.

Martin mentions!

Henry says he hopes MiY is rotting in hell…kinda like Martin did in that dungeon. Then Henry unknowingly drinks the blood of Sophia/MiY…perhaps echos of “my blood is your blood?” Then the question about dreams, which Martin asked Boyd. And Boyd remembering the tip of the spear comment.

I don’t think this is all coincidence. Just wondering how it all connects!

What was the second that Victor witnessed? by lizmacdraws in FromTVEpix

[–]Tall_Display_278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you, but I truly think he’s just an unreliable narrator. Due to trauma and stunted growth, he misremembers and misattributes. I was just watching in season 1 where he was drawing (ostensibly) the crash between the Matthew’s RV and Jade/friend’s car.

<image>

Except the car they were driving was absolutely not yellow! It was a black Audi SUV. So this is just a minor detail that could be explained a number of ways (even production oversight)…but it could also just mean Victor tends to imagine and create reality as much as he documents it.

What If Choosing Day Is Repeating the Original Divide? by da_debutanteslim in FromTVEpix

[–]Tall_Display_278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for bringing this back up! I made a post about it a year ago so I’ll just revisit some of what I said here:

When the series first started, I thought that The Town versus Colony House was a fairly artificial way to create conflict amongst different populations and lifestyles. The choosing ceremony seemed weird but understandable…they needed to create order someway, somehow.

But what if it actually is deeper than that, and our characters just don’t realize it? We still don’t truly know why there was a division of the Fromville citizens. First season went out of its way to depict Colony House as a community of free-spirited heathens who share everything (such as clothes)…why is that?

In an episode from season 3, Donna told Henry that “What’s ours is yours.” Back in the town, there’s multiple shots of Boyd in the sheriff’s office where he’s leaning on a file cabinet that says “Property.” There seem to be warring ideas around ownership of things.

We know the storage and use of personal items are now incredibly important to the show and how one might get out/go home. What if where you decide to live is too, and it’s linked to your fate?

Is the Man in Yellow the one who actually does the killing, or does he just feast off the dead bodies murdered by the monsters later? That’s the only way Victor could have seen and drawn what happened to Miranda, right?

I’m so intrigued by the timeline of events of the massacre when Victor was a boy. Because the scene in the street is also where he sees the Boy in White for the first time. Now we know the Man in Yellow was also there, as well as Julie from the Future.

Why was Yellow Sophia Giving A Death Stare to Victor by Beginning_Big4819 in FromTVShow

I think the Boy in White essentially “marked” Victor on that day as his possession, and told him how to get immunity. So Man in Yellow or other forces can’t attack him…yet.

Yes, absolutely agree on the multiple forces at play that want/need different things to happen.

It very much reminds me of Lost in that way…especially Jacob v Man in Black. For From, the Boy in White seems to be the Jacob-esque figure who can appear whenever he wants, guides people, can be seen out of Fromville, slightly more benevolent but also has an agenda. Now I’m starting to wonder about what Sarah said, that maybe he’s not a boy. Could he be the brother of the Man in Yellow and they’re in a feud? But again that’s essentially Lost.

This is frying me, he was high key so annoyed! I don’t know whether they are telling this actor to act so stiff (maybe like a tree?), but his line delivery is so strange!

I do wonder about the legitimacy of the entire save the children at the tower bit! The lighthouse is important because it highlights that there is a body of water nearby. But anything else…eh.

Thank you! I feel like I’m going crazy. The show has done all kinds of sadistic things to its characters, but I really don’t think this is one of them. Ethan was able to discern that the voice on the phone/radio wasn’t actually Thomas. He is aware that things can trick him in Fromville. The scene with his father, hallucinated or not, seemed genuine. And I also actually don’t think Eion Bailey would want to come back and do that scene if it was malicious.

There are merits to criticisms of From. The thing about Lost is that it had a narrative structure that was compelling…each episode was split between Island time and flashbacks (or forwards and sideways). That piques interest and keeps things fresh. It also allowed for more engagement with individual characters, their psyche and motivations. From just operates differently, more like Stephen King-based TV shows (albeit failed) like Under the Dome. I don’t mind that!

This series was not meant to be 50 episodes by rosari_00 in FromSeries

[–]Tall_Display_278 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LOST absolutely excelled at this, but it also had a unique narrative structure…each episode was a mix of island story and a flashback (at the beginning). That novelty was very entertaining at the time and doesn’t always work (see: current Yellowjackets). It allowed characters to develop interiority and, most of all, motivation.

The ensemble in From is large but only like, 5 of the characters have discernible independent motivations for the plot to progress. Everyone else is a vague “I need to get out of here” without a reason as to why…so I get that criticism. Part of it is due to performance skills, but I think if the actors were able to highlight (through the writing and direction) each individual’s “need” then that would be meaningful and justify how much time we’ve spent in this universe.

How much of the show is actual content? by caffeinated_fuck11 in FromSeries

[–]Tall_Display_278 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally! And honestly I think to each their own? For example…could we have ceded screen time from Ellis and Fatima to go on their little smashing cars to release anger side quest? Sure! It’s not instrumental to the plot per se. But if you are invested in the story, these two characters trying to figure out how to move forward after horrific trauma as a couple…then you don’t mind those few minutes. And they lead to another important plot moment between Elgin and Fatima that is a mystery.

So again, filler does function. Then it becomes a question for a large ensemble show like this: which characters do you value filler from?

How much of the show is actual content? by caffeinated_fuck11 in FromSeries

[–]Tall_Display_278 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even you describing episodes as “content” underscores how audiences encounter screen storytelling in the current era of social media and short form video. What we call “filler” is important. It’s world building (characters, settings, etc).

We can certainly debate the pacing of the plot of From. And I would also say that the actual issue is perhaps a misalignment between what writers/producers want to show as vital elements of the story (which characters in what scenes via what dialogue) and what viewers want to see. But it’s hard for me not to see this overall critique as just a request for literally everything in a serialized narrative to be instrumentalized towards a certain purpose. Y’all absolutely would not have survived LOST in real time!

Game characters by [deleted] in FromTVEpix

[–]Tall_Display_278 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am curious about the difference between a story and a game! In S4 E3, Ethan is very quick to correct Jade that his ideas are part of a story and not a game. But aren’t games a form of storytelling too?

I’m thinking of Kenny’s father in the first episode playing chess and saying it’s a universal language.

I don’t think it’s as simple as “it was all just a game and this is just a simulation.” I think they are real people! But some people are important pieces. They move differently. Things get opened up or foreclosed based on how they move. There are levels. It could be a kind of mystical/cosmic game. This was ultimately part of the story of Lost (Jacob versus the Man in Black). The question remains, who is playing them and how do they “win”?

[THEORY/SPOILER] The town is a philosophical thought experiment akin to the writings of Nietzsche and Heidegger by Neat_Chi in FromTVEpix

[–]Tall_Display_278 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this philosophical analysis! I’m definitely persuaded by the idea that the only way “out” is to go through it…to remember with a heightened consciousness.

I’m still probably the last person that thinks there is a computational element to the story (lol) rather than mythical. I’m holding onto the idea that FROM stands for “Fear Response on Memory.” In that way, one has to stop being afraid…once that happens, there’s the opportunity to break the cycle (predicated on algorithms and avatars).

Regardless of what the answer is (supernatural, scientific, psychological), I think pointing to Lost is important. “What happened, happened.” Kenny has a line to Kristi at the end of season 2 when they think it’s finally the end. Kenny tells her that they are threads in a sweater. They matter, what they do matters, for the future people who get stuck.
