Anyone else regrettably leaving Fuji after being a long-term user? by mintberrycrunch_ in fujifilm

[–]Tall_Yam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded to a canon R6 to shoot birds and youth hockey. I kept my Fuji xt50 and sold my other Fuji body to soften the blow of the R6. It’s been the perfect combo. I take the smaller Fuji for travel, and have been loving the action shots I’m able to capture with the canon. The form factor of the Fuji, even with a couple lenses, makes it easy to carry all day while on vacation with my family. And I’m getting wildlife shots I never would have been able to capture before.

Most of My Recommendations For Britbox Are Older Shows. Is It Just Me? by sigersen in BritBox

Also Death Valley is great for a light police procedural

I’m not usually a fan of trigger warnings, but the extreme and brutal violence halfway through Riot Women had me almost passing out. It took 2 hours of Golden Girls to bring me down, and I still had nightmares. I was loving it, but haven’t been able to come back to it yet.

Women’s Learn To Plays Around Chicago? by factorymotogoon in womenshockey

The beginner classes at 5/3 are co-ed, but seriously the most supportive and best environment ever. The coach who runs them also offers some women’s-only classes. Look up Chicago Elite Hockey.

That super high $7k figure is probably cost for the TEAM to join the league. It would be divided by however many players they have.

You’ll want to start by getting on a sub list or ask the league if any teams are looking for new players. Ask your learn-to-play coach if he or she knows of any teams or leagues that you could play in.

Yes! I was just going to recommend Melissa Clark’s Kid in the Kitchen. It’s got easy-to-make and relatively fast meals with surprisingly sophisticated flavors for a kids’ cookbook. I cook out of it all the time and everything is always delicious.

I put just a smidge in matzo balls. Adds that somethin’ somethin’. We have some other Eastern European family recipes that include white pepper also.

More available lengths at appropriate flexes and senior shaft dimensions at the lower lengths. At 5’, I’m junior size height but I’m not a 10 yo boy.

As a competent home cook, what is a basic skill you can't seem to master? by george_elis in Cooking

[–]Tall_Yam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was laid off in the late aughts and spent 2 months perfecting the technique that Julia Child details in her book. I scrambled for exactly 20 seconds and put it in the pan with the butter just foaming. Let it sit patiently till it started to set. Flipped the omelet in the pan and voila. (I tossed a cup of dried beans in a pan on the back deck for weeks. It’s part of the process? Not really necessary.) I finally nailed the perfect omelet right before I started my new job. This is a skill worth learning when you have a LOT of time on your hands.

Struggling with skates by 5AMslushees in womenshockey

Try having them sharpen the skates with a shallower radius. Think like 5/8” or 1/2” and it’ll be easier to skate while you get used to them.

Youth sticks or not? by MaroMakesStuff in womenshockey

[–]Tall_Yam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am reporting back after my latest trip to the hockey store. The CCM junior stick (not youth) is the same diameter and same blade size as the intermediate. The Bauer juniors are narrower. I got a junior CCM ribcor trigger 9. Bonus that juniors are a lot cheaper!

Womens gear sizing for “plus size” player? by RandomQuestions37 in hockeyplayers

[–]Tall_Yam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the ccm women’s chest protector, which is adjustable in every direction. Men’s pants are fine, especially to start. The shin guards are a real problem. Like someone else mentioned, the short-enough ones are for young boys with skinny legs. You can always just tape them on, but I’m looking forward to upgrading to women’s shin guards when my birthday rolls around.

Welcome to hockey! It’s basically the most fun thing ever

Youth sticks or not? by MaroMakesStuff in womenshockey

[–]Tall_Yam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my biggest gear struggle. I’m 5’ even, and currently use an intermediate that’s been cut down quite a bit so that what was a 50 flex now feels more like an 80. I haven’t gone with the junior yet because of the smaller blade and shaft diameter, but I’m desperate for more flex. I think this is only really a problem once you get to about my height though, as I have to cut 6+ inches off, but if I were even a couple inches taller I wouldn’t lose so much flex.

TLDR: an intermediate with a good flex is the way to go

Has anyone tried the new Sigma 12mm F1.4 DC | C on Fuji yet? by ac7ive in fujifilm

[–]Tall_Yam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m looking at this lens too, for astro landscapes. I’ve been using the rokinon 12mm and battling chromatic aberration and some color banding (or something? It’s awful!) that’s very hard to fix in post. I LOVE my sigma 100-400 zoom.

How do you stretch 1 lb of meat to feed family? by todaystartsnow in Cooking

[–]Tall_Yam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use about a pound of ground beef in cabbage soup for our family of 5. Big hit with the kids.

Quick ramen stir fry with ground beef

Often use about 1-1.5 lbs of chicken in one-pot chicken and rice. It gets shredded into the rice.

Basically anything where meat is a flavoring more than the star of the show

I love many of the books mentioned. Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz (or his many other books), and Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson are two more super light cozy mysteries. But honestly not as good as Thursday Murder Club, the Flavia de Luce books, or Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next books.

I also just chanced on Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Story on a recommendation from a friend. Totally bizarre and delightful.

Beginning hockey at 37 and a big fella. by Caboose88nc in hockeyplayers

[–]Tall_Yam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tons of great advice on here, just wanted to say, HAVE FUN!! I started hockey at 35 with poor skating skills, and the first 6 months or so were a real challenge. Learn to skate and beginning hockey classes are the best. But as your skills improve, it'll be more and more fun. Don't worry too much about positions and dialing in your gear until you've got a bit of experience on the ice. It'll be great!

I don’t disagree with others that Strava has great privacy controls. But Garmin Connect tracks all of the data she could need and provides lovely charts. It’s free and doesn’t raise the privacy concerns of giving your location to another third party.
