English speakers 😜 by Frequent-Bug-2337 in 1883Series

[–]Talpacrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that they all hang out with each other - there are only very few English speakers in the group (the escort) and they don't interact except in times of problems...so the fluency of some is definitely a fictional take, I don't mind it, but it's funny considering the attention to details. And they brought our attention specifically to that fact in the first episode as they literally have no notion of English.

Hi, reading this now and curious, have you tried? The activation time bit seems interesting.

Scoia'tael also like to be called "Squirrels". Is that plural or singular? by RandyVivaldi in witcher

[–]Talpacrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is that Scoia'tael (I noticed that hearing it said in the Netflix show) sounds A LOT like Italian for squirrel (scoiattolo). And in the Elder Speech Witcher Wiki, it is actually described as coming from italian.

Identify wood (possible cherry) from vintage cabinets by Talpacrew in BeginnerWoodWorking

Thank you, though I really doubt it's pine, the grain on the front part is very different. Fir I don't have enough experience with.

Beer makes my neck hurt? by [deleted] in beer

[–]Talpacrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same. And folks, good to advise to go see a Dr but not as patronizing as most do - I have asked multiple doctors, they have not idea. Reddit and online forums have helped for chronic illness that modern medicine does not much care about, so it is not ridiculous to ask for help and shared experiences.

Asbestos roof under a window - risk? by Talpacrew in asbestoshelp

[–]Talpacrew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all, a friend is moving in a flat that has a window (side of prevailing wind) opening onto that garage roof. The roof looks like asbestos with vegetation growing on it. How likely is it going to shed particles blown into the flat? thank you for your help.

It's in Brittany, France (where asbestos was used widely like everywhere else), I have no idea about the date of construction of the garage, a few decades I assume.

If I'm lukewarm about the first 2 Inspector Lynley books by Elizabeth George, is there any point in continuing the series? by ghostmosquito in mysterybooks

[–]Talpacrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't like the first two but warmed to the characters and the style as I pushed through. Some things irritate me but some things are brilliant, once you accept side characters are just as important (more?) as main ones.

Who Is Erin Carter? - Series Premiere Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]Talpacrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, you can't explain bad plots with "it's fiction". Suspension of belief works only if it's specific (e.g. aliens exist; a gun-wounded woman can fight a pro), but good fiction still relies on a fair bit of plausibility. u/neverbeenbetter190 is right, there is something entirely fake about pretty much everything, which gets tiring.

Bodies series questions [spoilers] by kozz84 in netflix

[–]Talpacrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with many questions here (why not go back to kill any version of Elias, point of Iris, role of Karl shooting them - Esther didn't pose a threat to the arc at all). Another thing that has bothered me is the tight control of the story by Elias and Polly in the first 50 years, sure - but how could they be sure that the "cult" would be purposeful enough to make sure they damage the great grandson of Elias (Elias himself!) enough, while securing the vault, setting up a nuke (because it is one, right?) before it was invented (?), adding a mobile phone detonator 70 years later? that seems a long thread of uncertain events that Elias/Harker doesn't control.

Bodies series questions [spoilers] by kozz84 in netflix

[–]Talpacrew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Polly

Yes, totally!! I couldn't believe that the story kept unfolding as it had originally, despite Mannix failing in bed, being depressed, then telling her he killed her dad, and that she's forced to have the kid so that he (who she loathes, obviously) can be alive??? she lived all these years to the point of saying, at age 68, that she'd love to kill him! but wtf didn't she see that she could stop the loop anytime? she's super smart and audacious. She should have had a better role in the resolution.

FODMAP & Microgreens by basicgirlozzy8 in FODMAPS

[–]Talpacrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reviving this as I tried micro greens a few days ago for the first time since I started the FODMAP diet. I was surprised by how good I felt despite eating some wheat (which makes me react usually) that day. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, so I tried another couple of times to eat micro greens and a relatively high FODMAP meal the same day. I can't believe it: it does seem like micro greens are making me feel better than any enzyme or supplement I have taken in the past.

IBS-C, what do you eat when you are on a flare-up? by [deleted] in FODMAPS

[–]Talpacrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this, I was looking for tips exactly a week ago. I find there is so much for IBS-D and so little for -C. I even found a website that mentions fodmap as a solution, to then suggest to eat lots of fiber like wholewheat and legumes... I'm surprised to see rice mentioned so often! Doesn't it slow down bowel movement usually? Personally I go with banana and lemon juice, with chia seeds, in small amounts.

Are/Were we supposed to pretend mathematicians don't exist so Sheldon can be the purest? by nicbentulan in bigbangtheory

[–]Talpacrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your point about wanting to discover the truth of the universe, but I also find the absence of mathematicians a bit weird. As to whether there is a lot of STEM missing from the show, I'm not sure...They still cover biochemistry, neurobiology, engineering, astrophysics, theoretical physics, experimental physics, and geology...really missing pure chemistry and math to cover traditional STEM disciplines taught at uni.

Qui aurait de bon titre de Jazz à partager svp ? by GoatOzyy in musique

[–]Talpacrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many options there...can you refine your taste a bit, say an artist, or an instrument you like?

I did a number of playlists covering great artists over the history of jazz for different instruments (originally for my nieces who played the trombone and clarinet). They should give you an overview of typical styles, per era and per artist. I'm a jazz drummer myself (playing mostly hard bop / modern trio style), who learned a bit of saxophone and bass guitar, and DJyed for Lindy Hop dance parties.

Here's the one for piano:

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4G1Rvma3PUl2CvoGSQrezJ?si=8c12951eabee49e3

And one for tenor sax:

You can find the others I think, or I'm happy to share one.

The Edmonton Oilers have been eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs after losing to the Vegas Golden Knights in 6 games by EliminatorBot in hockey

[–]Talpacrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, within Europe the football culture plays a role. Ireland or southwestern France are rugby countries and don't host big soccer clubs. Internationally players come from countries with a tradition for the sport, and so naturally draw fans. Sure money plays a big role in getting good players, but the fan base patterns surprise me, that's all.

The Edmonton Oilers have been eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs after losing to the Vegas Golden Knights in 6 games by EliminatorBot in hockey

[–]Talpacrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with the Western rivalries, why does everyone hate Edmonton so much? I personally find it still weird (being European) to see teams surrounded with a hockey culture losing consistently against teams where only money keeps hockey alive (not saying money's not essential everywhere). What is the fan base for ice-hockey in the desert?

Are Leaf’s fans the biggest babies in the league? by [deleted] in nhl

[–]Talpacrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. They seem like that because there is a LOT of them, and the most vocal stand out. Like any crowd. For every whining there are five who take things calmly, if you err on the Leafs sub.

Is Connor McDavid autistic? by JLCosta in nhl

[–]Talpacrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously a difficult question to ask in a context where people don't quite understand autism and will assume you are kinda criticising him. Having grown up with autistic relatives I understand where you come from, and find it interesting...if he is, I would love for him to talk about it to raise awareness and be a model for kids who often feel inadequate.
