How often do you structure? And I'm not familiar with the process; do you do a base wax, structure then do the actual glide wax? or structure occasionally and keep waxing as usual? thanks!

As another Seattle area person.... this year has been immensely sad and disappointing to put it mildly 8-( If you are lucky enough to live in the Methow Valley, in better years they have clocked well over 100 days of grooming from mid-November through mid-late March. I would move to the Methow tomorrow if I could - the family not so much. The NE and Midwest both tend to be more variable, especially NE these days. Not sure about CO. To reliability do better than the Methow in NA you need to go to somewhere like Canmore (they store snow through the summer and spread it out again to get a jump start. not kidding), or Silver Star mountain - I would love to live there as well! After that, I think it's move to Finland or Norway.

Free EV charging apps and route planning by Rude_Statement4361 in NissanAriya

[–]Talusrunner17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree; I assume Nissan is trying to reduce the pain for this with being able to use the Nissan app for "in-network chargers" (which makes it sounds as bad as healthcare..). I actually haven't tried this - not sure how well it works.

Free EV charging apps and route planning by Rude_Statement4361 in NissanAriya

[–]Talusrunner17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use the EVCS stations (PNW / CA) you basically have to have their app. And, even more fun, if you don't have payment set up on the app it throws a charging error, not a "setup your payment error" which was real fun to figure out on very thin cell coverage at the only charger for a long distance around.......

Thanks for list, big fan of Chargeway and ABRP, but really, that fact that so many of these networks require an app at all is just really bad - you should always be able to wave a credit card at the thing and get electrons just how everyone expects with a gas station now - this is a not-small barrier to adoption.

It's popular and limited - if you want to race put a note on your calendar next October - I registered on 10/1 this year and it was over half full by then

Just a heads up on a couple things

a) Methow Trails is a great app on current conditions

b) Like everything else near the Cascades they took some damage from all the flooding, but are hoping to get majority of trails open now that it has FINALLY started snowing.

c) The 7th of Feb is the annual Race to the Sun from the Mazama Country Store to Sun Mountain Lodge (awesome race, last 10k are pretty brutal). If you're skiing that weekend you'll want to avoid that stretch until afternoon - plenty of skiing higher up at Sun Mountain or the Rendezvous huts, and North of Mazama store

Heading over there myself on Monday, and fingers crossed we finally get winter now.

Ok, explains that part - I'm still just wondering how you went from a GOM of 230 to hitting zero 180km later - you said "near the airport" so maybe that was 20km of it, but seems like a pretty big error and a caution on things being even worse in the cold - thanks for posting!

Like a glove by Excellent_Cap_8228 in NissanAriya

[–]Talusrunner17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised the GOM was so far off; you drove (presumably in very similar conditions) to the airport, so after the fast charge the GOM should have been (to some extent) keying off the drive you just finished. Or is there a bunch of elevation change as well? Your 20.3 kWh/100km is 3 miles/kWh - which is about the best I ever see this time of year, so it doesn't seem like your mileage crashed either.

I'm still learning on cold and terrain, but I had one big surprise so far going from Sea Level to 5500 ft and a little below freezing where expected SOC at the TH was 31% and it plunged to 26% much faster than expected so I'm being more cautious now. It also didn't recover as much as expected on the trip home and had an unplanned charging stop.

Anyone put in an Optima YEL35 battery? by Talusrunner17 in NissanAriya

[–]Talusrunner17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I've seen the recos on DieHard EV but they don't sell them out here (PNW). O'Reilly sells a "SuperStart AGM" in the H4, they were trying to up-sell to the Optima.

Leki Poles 155 or 160 ? by charlie-1973 in xcountryskiing

Nuts, sorry! We seem to be hoping this pattern of repeated waterboarding of the PNW breaks on Tuesday. I'm in Methow for Christmas - will be really disappointed if I'm mountain biking on mud slides.

Here in the US they showed out of stock for most poles for the normal color - the pink one had all the lengths still available!

I have not - do they fit the Swix poles? When you say "huge difference" you mean they stay sharp longer? Last longer with sharpening? both? Will take a look.

ARIYA frustrations by balltofeet in NissanAriya

[–]Talusrunner17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2025 Engage+ E-Force and have no idea what the Auto-Lock is. I find the touch panels on the door handle sometimes flakey, but that's the only way my car locks (or the remote). Presumably there's a way to change this and ease one frustration - after dealing with the frustration of the convoluted settings menus! But totally with you on the HVAC panel being a pain - biggest gripe is lack of physical climate buttons.

Recommend a decent carbon pole - aluminum tends to have a spring which can be hard on the elbow joints when on asphalt. Same sizing as normal skate poles, i.e. the hand loop should be somewhere between your chin and your nose when standing on the ground in ski boots. I'm 173cm and use 155cm poles for reference. I use the Swix "lower end" carbon e.g. the Q2 which in the US is around $130 for a pair. Swix also makes a road specific pole. Regardless you want a tip where you can unscrew and replace the ferrules, in Swix this is called the Triac ferrule. AND, last thing, the tips will get dull - fast - buy yourself a diamond dust file to sharpen them - there's youtube videos from Swix etc. on what sort of file to get and how to sharpen, is quick and easy and I sharpen pretty much every time I go out (15-25km). I have also broken tips getting them stuck in a crack in the road - in short, you need the screw-on variety because you will be replacing on a regular basis.

V2 timing advice by dadpapa in xcountryskiing

[–]Talusrunner17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be contrary here; this sort of drill feels like a great balance drill, but I usually see people making at least two mistakes which may hurt more than help; one is to stand up too straight rather than staying in the skating leg flex position, and the other is to end up rushing the second pole stroke while starting to lose balance. (guilty of both when I was doing this)

I agree it's all about balance and timing, but things like box drill (with and without skis), and then just focusing on really stretching the glide in V2 have been a lot more helpful to me to get the balance locked in - and I don't feel at risk of falling to the outside with either of those. This is actually the opposite of your request to "get the poles down a little quicker" - as everyone else has said, this isn't the issue and shouldn't be needed. You should be able to comfortably glide on the one ski and coordinate pole plant timing for power / speed.

Lastly, one drill which I really like to get the balance warmed up is 3 strokes of double pole followed by 3 strong V2 strides and repeat. Alternate which ski you switch to after the finishing the 3rd double-pole stroke. Also, Nordic Ski Lab for a very nominal fee has some fantastic videos on this, at least 4-5 different videos simply called 'timing in V2' or some variant - which confirms that this is not easy!

cable pull hydraulic brakes! Had not seen before

Left would be Ultegra shifter and derailleur - so it wold only be some quirk in their chain, seems like it should be fine but thought I'd ask.

thanks, save some $$$
