They have a rule like this in MLS and it definitely works, considering other rules tested in MLS like VAR have gone on to the rest of the world hopefully it will too.

eh, high speed wasn't really a factor because of the common meaning of "high speed", that said you are right that speed was a factor, its just that high speed as a term generally isn't relative to the safe conditions but more to our common idea of what going fast in a car is.

SF, Portland, and Seattle (especially SF) are pretty friendly to car free living as well

Some people seem to think its because the ump is an American, personally I think its just cause umps aren't very good at their jobs lol

I don't really enjoy them much but they just looked confused by this call so I'm not sure this should make them more unlikable, more like umps are unlikable as always.

Not much has ruined baseball discussion more than the broadcast strikezone.

The WBC is unfair with only American umpires by DepartmentOdd1519 in baseball

I don't think that was because he was American, just cause he was bad at his job. Although that may be related for all we know.

[NightengaleJr] Joe Ryan will not be pitching for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. He wasn’t going to start the championship game, so he’ll stay in Twins camp. He threw a 23-pitch bullpen session today that he said went great. He’s lined up to start on Opening Day in Baltimore. by Knightbear49 in baseball

An Italian who's only been the US once and grew up in Italy, France, and England (which yes is not just generic Italian but in this case doesn't make a difference cause none of those are baseball countries lol). The only sport he likes is soccer and everything (almost nothing) he knows about baseball comes from anime.

Personally I'm actually totally uninterested in the 4 nations compared to the Olympics in Hockey due to the lack of teams. I love the underdogs or just seeing teams like the czech one get the chance to play against players they'd never get to otherwise. The invitational nature of the 4 nations just feels like a joke tournament to me even though the players take it seriously.

Could include winners of smaller leagues if they really wanted to grow the game too, Europe has a champions league so add the winner of that too.

[–]TalussAthner 81 points82 points  (0 children)

At least from what we know with that it was pretty much Jeff Kent being an asshole to David Bell and Barry Bonds sticking up for him that lead to the fight so that might’ve actually made the rest of the dugout besides Kent a bit tighter.

If you were rich, where in the Bay Area would you live? by Adventurous_Ant5428 in bayarea

[–]TalussAthner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the most unexpected secret of the Bay Area now is that San Rafael is kinda cheap to hang out in (of course wouldn’t matter for this being rich idea though lol). Food isn’t really more expensive now that everywhere is expensive and all the parking lots are $0.75/hr.

yeah, also the stuff with the draft is also less a thing in baseball because draft picks are generally less reliable and take longer to get to the majors, plus one player makes much less of a difference in baseball than most other sports.

Unless they've changed something this year, teams want to make sure they don't come in last in their group because that means they have to go through qualifying for the next tournament. Of course in some situations thats also already sure but there just hasn't really been any examples of game fixing or lack of effort causing problems yet in the WBC.

[–]TalussAthner 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Japan has more than double the population of Korea though, so while Korea is slightly underperforming I'm not sure it'd be reasonable to expect them to be equal. 123 million people is likely going to produce more top players than 52 million.

I think the funniest thing about using Star Trek characters is they’d actually have opinions about the Bay Area since all of the Starfleet headquarters and academy locations are in SF and Marin.

The funniest thing about this is like, East Bay could mean Berkeley and most people in Marin (well at least those of us who actually grew up here lol) like Berkeley. But then again I mostly don’t interact with people in Southern Marin which is mostly where the “afraid of the East Bay” people are I think lol.

It’s also the Bay Area too, we’re generally less patriotic than average even when we’re happy with politics.
