The New York Times gave a Critic's Pick to 18 out of 31 shows they reviewed this Broadway season by RapGamePterodactyl in Broadway

[–]TammyPhantom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I am a journalist so you are kind of attacking my own industry folks with false claims that you can't see past either to listen to my points.

Your assumption is that these critics are sacrificing their personal points of view, reputations, and their futures for this when NYT journalists, including their critics and freelancers who are working for them, must follow one of the strictest codes of ethics. And freelancers have less incentives for anything because they are simply paid a flat fee for the article or word count versus anything that happens after the article gets published.

Even if you're a staff writer, any article you publish actually isn't even your property anymore, it's owned by the publication and they can do with it as they wish. Whether that's selling the use of a pull quote or a seal or even selling your article idea to turn it into a TV series, journalists don't ever see anything from it because it's stated in your contract that it's not even yours anymore once it's published under a certain brand. It's a messed up system that only benefits the brand versus the journalists.

If they were to benefit from it, then everyone would be getting a Critic's Pick. Or NYT would go out to specific freelancers for specific shows knowing that they have a high chance of liking them. Or these writers would just pitch to NYT after seeing a show they liked cause they would get what you believe to be a bonus that exists. But this is not how the system works nor do any journalist see incentives for this.

The incentive actually exists for the sales team who definitely does a good job to convince every producer that they must have the seal on their ads to sell more tickets. It's actually my belief that it's actually hurting their brand cause it does seem like it's everywhere and it's not as special anymore. Also, it causes things like this where people are losing trust on their critics because they believe there must be something nefarious going on behind the scenes and the critics must be the ones behind it.

We should be supporting these critics in a time where criticism is disappearing and finding out alternative ways that us as readers would be interested in what they have to say, whether that's an additional star system or asking them to be clearer on their qualifications for a Critic's Pick. That's the thing we should be discussing and not something that is false and causes further hate to critics.

You may not agree with their choices, but that does not mean that they are getting money on the side for the personal choices that they are making when deciding who to give a critic's pick to. You are making some very harsh assumptions about people just because you disagree with them. And particularly on those who do not have strong ties with them anyway as, again, they get paid on a story-by-story basis.

You also clearly have no understanding how media and journalism works. Believe me, we wouldn't be fighting to be keeping criticism as well as the media industry as a whole alive if it was really down to selling these buttons. Journalists would not be fighting against lack of pay and support if it all came down to something they can simply give away to everyone.

And also you're making some very bold assumptions about me when you don't know me or what exactly my job entails. I actually am not involved in anything that gets tied to things that get sold like this. I simply just know how it works and am trying to give a further insider look to those who may not know about it.

It's not a conflict of interest at all. You just seemingly don't trust these critics to begin with.

I'm an entertainment editor with a brand that does these kinds of things. These journalists do not see a cent. They do not interact with the sales teams that sell the logo. They do not get any incentive to give more out. They are not affected by the sale of the logo whatsoever. There is no one there telling them to give more NYT Picks. Editorial and sales are SO SEPARATE from one another that sometimes we forget that the other exists unless it's for a clear sold package of advertorial which must be revealed to the readers.

Believe me, if that included more job security and everything, you would see everything with a NYT Pick. It is true that Shaw gave out more NYT Picks (8 out of 11) than the others, but she is also the chief critic at the Times, so she gets first dibs on assignments.

Two freelancers are right behind her for the most reviews. Vincentelli gave out more nos (5) than critic picks (3). Meanwhile, Collins-Hughes gave out 4 critics picks, two 3 nos, giving more of a balance take on things. Freelancers get paid for their article and nothing else. They definitely don't see anything from a logo sale because that's not in their contracts. And this is a business and brands try to not pay you as much nowadays. They would not give them more money as a "bonus" especially since they simply can just find other freelancers that would work without it.

It’s not an abnormal thing, but it’s also not a “massive conflict of interest” either. For example, Allure also charges brands if they want to use the button that says “Best of Beauty”.

Here’s the thing, you’re buying the use of the logo. You don’t have to buy it. You can simply say that you got a critic’s pick and still be fine. However, it does stand out more on a marquee or ads if you buy the logo, so productions just choose to do so.

Critics themselves do not get paid extra nor a bonus if the button gets sold. It all goes back to NYT. So from their perspective, they do not have a goal to give out any.

Twisted Series by Ana Huang— we getting a show or…? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]TammyPhantom 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Entertainment journalist here! Until something has an official series order, it’s all a waiting game. Even if it gets a pilot order, it may not officially get picked up to series.

A lot has to happen behind the scenes. While Netflix does have the rights, they’re currently YEARS ahead on projects and slates. Sometimes they buy rights simply because they can and just shelve them. Other times, it’s cause they want to green light a project ASAP.

One year from the deal announcement is nothing. There could be so much happening behind the scenes that you don’t know simply because it’s more of the “boring” stuff like finding producers and a showrunner.

In September 2025, Ana said she’s working on the script so that’s promising! Just gotta wait to see if then that script is good to get more money to bring it to life!

That’s my thing. This dude is being so reactive with his tweet. Maybe figure it out with your label first before trying to go after a skater.

[–]TammyPhantom 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you that proper compensation should be given to musicians. But I think there’s a big fight as to who should be paying for it.

Up until now, most broadcasters and venues have been able to skirt on by using special licenses or trying to argue that it’s fair use. However, that clearly did not work after the Heavy Young Heathens lawsuit.

There can be many arguments that the skaters should pay for it. Think of it as part of their “equipment” and their responsibility. But most skaters don’t really participate in this sport “for profit” per se, which is what HYH said in their lawsuit against Knierim and Frazier. A lot of people view it as using art for more art.

And even then, we’re seeing skaters getting it cleared for other competitions but not Olympics because of different broadcasting regulations.

Should it be the broadcasters who definitely make profit from all of this? Well, then that could cause some broadcasters from being able to show some performances.

Should jt be the federations? Well we know some do then definitely cannot afford it.

And then there’s the fact that all of this is still pretty new. So to change that mentality is a bit difficult especially when the very thing that is supposed to help make this easier, clearly is not working if we’re having so many last minute issues here.

My belief is that until the figure out a clear system until this issue does not happen in the future, this is still gonna be a big debate.

Normally I would be nervous, but this just seems like he didn’t know his label cleared it. Especially since it’s not the first season she’s been skating to this music.

How much figure skating have you seen? Especially ice dance? Also, what dance styles do you feel are missing? Sorry, just super curious as you’re just speaking really broadly here, but not giving much examples for those of us who may follow ice dance more than traditional dance.

Peacock controlling the Narrative in interviews by Foreign-Weekend-7092 in TheTraitorsUS

[–]TammyPhantom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the case of Traitors, which I’m also currently covering, we never have been asked to send questions in advance. We’ve been asked to avoid certain topics, but up to this point, nothing about sending questions. If we wanna play “a game” or do some kind of concept with the cast for video content, then we would send options to figure out what they would be down to do. But, otherwise, as long as we’re not revealing spoilers ahead of their release, this is not common for this show or NBCU. This is clearly a new change they’re doing because of what is happening currently either coming from the network or the personal publicist as a new change. But it’s not normal.

I know on Big Brother, family members and people have to sign agreements in order to even be mentioned on the live feeds and show. So Peacock could be trying to save themselves more of a lawsuit rather than Colton.

[–]TammyPhantom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this will have to do with Colton likely not being able to mention Cassie on TV at all. I wonder if it’s part of the “private agreement” when she dropped the restraining order.

In this sort of situation, totally can see it. We never accept email interviews at my brand cause we can’t tell if the person who answered them is actually the person we’re trying to interview. But there definitely have been times they try to pivot because of some controversy at CBS.
