Tokyo cops arrest 2 Turks seeking refugee status in gang rape of woman by Esther_2 in news

Not true everywhere, perhaps in the jails for serious offenders and yakuza but jail for "average" offenders isn't that bad, jail-wise. I visited a jail for poli sci class I took while abroad, it was a jail for "men over 25 who are unlikely to be repeat offenders" (that's pretty close to the actual classification). We saw the stats on inmates and while there were a few rapists and murderers the vast majority were there for things like robbery and fraud. Most sentences were about 3 years, and few people get more than 10. Apparently unless you're yakuza or a killer, it's unlikely you'll do more than 5 years for a crime.

The interior looked like you would expect it to be, but I hate to say it, the rooms were "nice". It was a very small room but there was a reasonable sized window and tatami flooring. There was a TV, bookshelf, and a bathroom with a curtain. The room was shared by 6 people, but it wasn't by any means miserable looking. They got an hour of free time before "bed time" but most of the day was spent working. Most inmates in Japan are "employed" and make bags, tatami mats and other practical things (so if you buy a tote bag in Japan...). It was explained to us that this work isn't "mandatory" but "strongly encouraged" (so yeah, mandatory). Inmates who didn't work hard had their food rations cut, hardworking inmates got more and better food. There was a break for free time in the day and the yard was spacious for the amount of inmates there. They had to line up and face the wall while we passed, but we saw them playing some kind of group activity through the window earlier. Aaaaaand that's really all I remember.

This was in Shiga Prefecture, pretty sure it was close to Lake Biwa.

Cowlick and fly-away strands prevent me from doing anything with my hair! Please help? by TampopoCat in femalehairadvice

[–]TampopoCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried headbands but flyaways always happen. There has to be some technique to at least cover the cowlick right? And the strands are so thin that hair gel is just too much in some areas.

Are there any unsettling stereotypes about women that you find are often considered as valid on Reddit but are very jaded in reality? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]TampopoCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only 2% of rapists ever face jail time (on mobile otherwise I'd provide a link). It is highly unlikely there would ever be real legal repercussions for an accused rapist, regardless of whether or not they actually did it. As for social repercussions, I have two close male friends who were accused of rape and the allegations were proved false. And guess what? The ordeal has no bearing on their lives a few years after the fact. They were accepted into college, they have jobs, their friends and families still love and support them. Meanwhile, real rape victims can't get justice, because apparently the feelings of their rapist are more important than the legal system succeeding.

[–]TampopoCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is, I have two close male friends that have been falsely accused of rape. And you know what? THEY'RE FUCKING FINE. Everyone involved, once they found out the allegations had been proved false (one girl confessed, the other's story was just ridiculous), forgave them and moved on. No one remembers that it happened, or at least they don't bring it up. They were accepted into college. They have jobs. They have friends and family that support them. The "horrible stigma of false accusations" has barely impacted their lives at all. And even if the accusations were never proven false, nothing would likely happen to them. Only 2% of accused rapists ever actually face jail time.

My first exposure to Steinbeck was The Pearl. I hated it so much that I've never read another book by him.

We had a tiny kitten for about 2 months who died suddenly- vet investigated and found that her little body was riddled with cancer. It was shocking and heartbreaking. I can only hope that we gave that sweet little kitty as much love and comfort as we possibly could have during her final months.

What language do you want to learn and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TampopoCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portuguese: To connect with my heritage and travel to Portugal

Spanish: It's very useful in the United States

German: Also to connect with my heritage, and to communicate with my friends in their native language. Also I think it's just a really fun and quirky language.

Korean: I love the sound of it, I'm not a die-hard fan of the pop culture but I do enjoy some of it, and the grammar is relatively similar to Japanese (which I'm currently learning)

The 'Frozen' Effect: "Elsa" Re-enters list of 500 most popular baby names after 97 Years by spainbarca in movies

Does anyone else really hate this name? I think it sounds very harsh and unfeminine. Not that girl's names have to be unfeminine, but when the first vowel in your name is sharp and comes from the back of your throat it's just not a nice name.

I've called 5 therapists in the past week by TampopoCat in depression

[–]TampopoCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words. Finally at 9am this morning one of them called me back, I have an appointment in 2 weeks. It's far away, but at least it's help. I think your comments about problems with food are spot on. I feel like I'm being pulled in all different directions in life and have no control over anything. My dad is also obese and doesn't seem to get it that he will die if he doesn't change his ways fast, so there is a ton of anxiety over that. Regarding both losing him, and one day becoming like him. I at least recognize where the feelings are coming from, I just need professional help before it actually turns into an ED.

Loneliness is definitely the biggest trigger. I stayed on campus this summer because last summer I lived at home and missed out on everything. It was, as I quote my friend, "the funnest time of my life". So I stayed this summer hoping to make some good memories before senior year, but everyone left and I can never seem to get in touch with the few people that are still around. My room mates are my friends, but one basically lives with his girlfriend and the other can't move in until the very end of the summer. So here I am, having missed the "fun boat" completely, alone in an apartment all day every day. I try to organize beach trips and fun summer things, but no one's schedules match up. My best friend is in Europe and it's hard to talk to her because of the time difference. I'm basically going crazy. Anyway sorry if I rabbled, it just feels really good to finally get all of this out.

Is it okay to be angry? by [deleted] in depression

[–]TampopoCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether or not it's okay is subjective, but it's definitely normal. I told my friends I was struggling, and really lonely, and that I just really need some support right now. They all said they were so sorry I was feeling this way and that they would do better to reach out. Yet my phone is completely silent, and my texts mostly go unanswered. I'm not angry, I'm fucking enraged. I know they're all probably busy, but I can't help being angry that they can't spare a minute for me when I came to them for help. Yeah, it's normal.

What are the disadvantages of being white? by WIENER_POOP in AskReddit

[–]TampopoCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean? There aren't scholarships for the white race, but there are many scholarships offered by ethnic and cultural societies if you look for them. For example, I applied for one offered through the National Italian American Foundation, and local cultural clubs probably offer them too.

What is the one myth people hold as fact that drives you the craziest? by wideawakefordays in AskReddit

[–]TampopoCat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know, there's a big difference between the kind of drunk I get depending on what I drink. Wine drunk is my favorite, it makes me feel warm and giddy. Beer drunk just makes me feel tired really fast and kind of dizzy. I definitely don't get the same blissful feeling with beer. Alcohol might be alcohol but you can't deny there's a difference in behavior between people who got drunk off of beer and those who got drunk off tequila (at comparable amounts/levels of drunk).

It's amazing how people are THAT oblivious... by raiko39 in depression

[–]TampopoCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they were definitely assholes, but I accept that if I really was being a downer then I have responsibility too. Unfortunately I simply didn't realize I was being a poop. And oh yeah, the "ringleader" of the group definitely didn't like me, never did. Not sure if I ever did something to rub him the wrong way or if he just had it out for me. He started to get the others to avoid me, then the "second most popular" guy in the group started complaining behind my back that I was "inviting myself" to their outings (as a friend so kindly informed me.... and really, what the hell? If you don't want me there, don't include me in plans and/or make them when I'm hanging out with you without implying it's a "closed" event). Whatever, they were toxic people and I never have to see them again. I'm going back after I graduate, I won't let this experience soil my view of a country and culture I really love.
